Patrick Moore Tribute Thread

Would anyone care to pay their respects for the late, great Sir Patrick Moore, who wrote more than sixty books on astronomy?

I was really deeply upset on Sunday when I heard the news Sir Patrick Moore had passed away. cry I never posted as I thought many in the US wouldn't know who he was. I've always been fascinated by The Sky at Night & it was a real monthly treat for me. Even though I'm not in2 astronomy that much at all, his words of wisdom & enthusiasm always would whet my appetite that one day I'd dust off that telescope that has become an ornament & do some gazing deep in2 the universe, the way my Dad showed me how to on really late, cold, frosty nights when I was little.

There was something so endearing about Sir Patrick; an incredibly posh & fast speaking old eccentric, & ahhh I just loved him! This past year I saw him becoming more frail & slower in his speech & I knew it wouldn't be long. He was the longest serving TV presenter on the longest running TV show & is in the Guinness book of records for it. What I found really sad was the reason he was always a batchelor, was because his fiancé was killed in the London Blitz in the 2nd world war & he knew she was the only one in life for him. He never wanted another. He learned to play the piano later in life & also became an accomplished percussionist also. But he'll always be remembered for opening up the stars to generations of viewers, making it possible for all ages to get involved in Star gazing.

If anyone is in2 astronomy, here's a link to his very last episode of The Sky at Night broadcast a week last Monday.

Even the title music which had been the same since 1957, made me really sad 2 know he has left this world. He'll now be the newest & brightest star born in some distant galaxy... Waiting for some little boy or girl of the future 2 discover his brilliant & beautiful light! Rest in Peace Sir Patrick Moore x

^ Ah bother, looks like BBC iplayer has stopped playing this episode already. Real shame. BBC made a tribute to him & looked back over his career. This link will work until the 18th December:
