You'd have to be a real dumbass not to realize that something like this could happen.

1) Make a woman the butt of an international joke.

2) Probably get her fired.

If the DJ's couldn't foresee these things happening, they need to have their brains examined.

This is a freaking hospital... not the set of a sitcom. I find it insane that anyone would find this harmless or funny.

I'm not talking about legalities. I'm just saying you'd have to be pretty stupid not to realize that there was a reasonable possibility of suicide here. All this talk about "the dj's couldn't have foreseen this" is very silly imo.

That said, the prank was really lowdown.

I don't think it's been officially ruled a suicide yet but it's not that unusual for people to kill themselves over losing a job. She may have been in fear of what her husband would do, her family may have already been having money problems, she may have feared prosecution, etc, etc....

I have a feeling that this ain't over either. I think that the royals may go after that station just like they went after the guy who took the boobie pics of Kate.

Oh they haven't called it a suicide yet? Hmm, interesting...

A person drinks and drives... he ends up killing someone. He says, "I didn't foresee that possibility". He's just a dumbass, like these 2 dj's.

Like I said, I'm not talking about legalities here.

If a person is humiliated, and his job is in danger, there's a small but significant chance he will kill himself. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Add to that the wordwide factor of humiliation. The DJ's should have realized this "prank" was not worth the risk.

Nurse who died after Kate hoax call was from India

LONDON (AP) — A nurse found dead days after she took a crank call about the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge was originally from India, British police said Saturday, as details began to trickle out about the woman whose death has sparked anger at the Australian radio DJs behind the hoax.

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was found dead early Friday at nurses' housing provided by London's King Edward VII hospital, where Prince William's wife, the former Kate Middleton, was being treated for acute morning sickness this week.

Police released a grainy photo of Saldanha on Saturday. She had lived in Bristol in southwestern England with her family for the past nine years, Scotland Yard confirmed.

Police said her death is being treated as "unexplained," though they said they didn't find anything suspicious. A coroner will make a determination on the cause next week.

Police have made no connection between her death and the prank call, but people from London to Sydney have been making the assumption that she died because of stress from the call.

stress from the call? I know stress causes sickness, but maybe it was an underlying cause and the stress triggered that, still don't condone what she did though, what a shame

I'm still trying to figure out why all the attention is focused on the nurse, and NOT the hospital who FAILED to put safeguards in place for screening damned phone calls!!!

We had(?) an app(?) here that allowed you to alter your caller ID...so when the person on the other end of the phone saw your number come up, it showed whatever you wanted it to. I don't know how it worked or whether or not it's still available...BUT when you have a high-profile patient such as the Duchess you would THINK that the people in charge would have stricty rules concerning phone calls, visitors, etc., etc.

True... but I think the attention is on the nurse because it makes for a more "interesting story".

I'm pretty sure the hospital is taking lots of heat, it's just that the death is overshadowing everything else at the moment.

It may not be that they failed to put safeguards in place so much as the employees didn't follow the rules...hard to say at this point.

People keep speculating about these terrible 'consequences' she was facing, but that's just imagination running wild. The hospital already said in their statement that she was not facing any disciplinary action over this, let alone losing her job - or any of these wild fantasies about facing the wrath of the Royals. (Prince Charles was on the news sharing a giggle with journalists about it the day after it happened, so there was nothing to suggest they were calling for heads to roll.)

I agree it was dumb and out of line, and it seems fair to say that the pranksters could have reasonably foreseen that someone might have got into trouble over it (though that didn't transpire in reality), and also that, in any case, one shouldn't mess around with people involved in such important matters as healthcare. I still can't get behind the idea that anyone could have predicted it would have fatal consequences, though, so judgements putting 'her blood on their hands', so to speak, still seem overly harsh.

It does seem like a completely harmless prank, the type of which is happening everyday on radio stations. It's really strange that someone tricked by a harmless prank not even directed at theirself and who has a family, would kill themselves.

Has any news article given any background on the receptionist?

All I could find was general info like she was 46 and she had come to UK 10 years ago from India.

Here's exactly what I was thinking (quoted from a news article above) "Police have made no connection between her death and the prank call, but people from London to Sydney have been making the assumption that she died because of stress from the call."

I was wondering why the public was jumping to the conclusion that somehow a harmless prank directly caused her death.

People seem to be making emotional but illogical conclusions.

Thanks for the clarification...good to know that she wasn't facing any disciplinary action. Like I said, we still don't know for sure if this was even a suicide and I did say that I don't think anyone would have expected a death to come out of this.

That said, I still don't think that anybody over the age of 15 or so should be choosing a place like a hospital, fire station, police station or similar examples to pull a prank...we really do need to draw the line somewhere with the foolishness already.
