Catfish: Let's discuss this! Mtv will be airing a new series called Catfish, which is based on the documentary that premiere at Sundance in 2010. What the reality show is about people who are involved in a online romance, but has yet to meet. I just happened to come across it and found it to be interesting. The series begin on Monday, November 12th.
My story took place when I was in high school. This was back somewhere between '88-'90, I had met this guy on the phone through a friend of a friend. Anyway, after a few late night/overnight conversation, we started "going together". The problem was we had never met. I thought I was being "mature" about the whole thing, you know loving a person for the person, not what they look like. LOL But, that got old after awhile and I wanted to met the "love of my life". Only there was always a reason for us not being able to meet and everything seemed legit. Then I started to hear things about this person for someone who had no vested interest in my over-the-phone romance. I can't remember how everything came out, but to make a long story short...my he turned out to be a she.
So, my question is has anyone on here met someone on Facebook or some other social media that developed into a relationship only to find out that everything about the other person was a lie?
I'm sure I'm not the only one on here that has had this happen to them.

Damn, that is fucked up! Did she have a deep voice & everything? Did you two live in the same state? I know if I live in the same state with someone, we would meet up with the quickness. Yes, I've had this happen. I won't go into the details but basically, I travelled a few hours away to meet this person- had a fabulous time with them (in the beginning) and then slowly began seeing the facade fade away. This person was NOT who I thought they were- turned out there was a long line of girls left in his wake who he had borrowed money from (and not repaid) treated like crap, blah blah blah. He and I stayed friends because I felt that he had "issues" and was not for me, but thought he had some good traits. Years later when I learned from his new girlfriend that he wanted her to sign for him a new car (using her good credit) instead of minding my own business I emailed this girl immediatly, warning her and giving her all his old girlfriends email addresses so she could contact them and get the horror stories from them (money lost, money stolen, credit ruined) and then cut off contact with him.
Like Chris Rock said, You're not meeting them, youre meeting their representative.

Sounds like something that happens on The Maury Show every other day. [Edited 11/10/12 12:43pm] The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.

Yes to both questions. Especially at night when you get tired and your voice deepens even more. The funny thing about it was I must have repressed the whole experience, because it wasn't until my daughter went through a similar thing on with one of her "friends" that my best friend reminded me of my situation. It turned out in my daughter's case that the girl (one of her best friends) who "introduced" her to Cameron was, in fact, Cameron. She pull a picture of a guy from somewhere and created a MySpace page for "him" and that's basically how they corresponded. Truly sick shit!!! It's easier to keep the masquerade going now that we have FB and the like than it was when I was younger. Nowadays, the world is at your disposal as far as being able to meet people around the world. It's nothing to go online and "borrow" someone's picture, create an account under the guise of that person or make up a whole new identity, and it's off to the races.

You should have met up with the person before going any further since you two were in the same state. I would have went to them. If someone won't give you their address, but wants to be in a relationship you, there's a redflag too. [@ least in my opinion]
Neither had webcams? I don't see why people would do anything like this to others..... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

Issues. In retrospect, I should have. No, to the webcam question.
Are you going to watch the show?

Catfish is delicious. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

More like vintage Jerry Springer. At least on Maury, the most that you're going to encounter is someone who is cheating or don't know who their "baby-daddy" is. This is way more crazy than that!!!

Nuggets maybe, but I prefer Perch...with lots of mustard and hot sauce.

I love catfish. Fried whole, with tons of hot sauce and plenty of good, starchy sides like cornbread dressing and mac and cheese, plus some tangy, crunchy coleslaw to round out the flavor/texture palette....

I'll give a real answer too, but it's not nearly as exciting as the OP's, LOL!

I enjoyed the film documentary, but I really don't want to see this television version at all! Seems like it will be one of those hard to watch shows
If you will, so will I | |

I wish I could find the story in The New York Times I once read that was about a lady who fell in love with a man on the Internet who she arranged to meet and then he died just days before the meeting so she travelled to go to his memorial service and met (and stayed with ) the woman who had been pretending to be the man. Totally unhinged and super scary. I'm the mistake you wanna make

I met the last two guys I was with online. They weren't crazy, but they weren't for me. The online "honeymood phase" can wear off, but it doesn't automatically mean they're crazies underneath. You have to modify your dating rules when it comes to dating online. I graduated bitches!!! 12-19-09
