My worst nigthmare at the movies

Question: Is it a reasonable assumption when u go 2 the movies that people will be quiet and watch the movie? I just had the worst time imaginable at the movie and Saturday and reaffirmed why I don't go 2 public theaters any more.

I really wanted 2 see Flight with Denzel and go not wait until it comes on DVD so I decided 2 go see it at the theater. I have seen less than 5 movies at the theater in the last 10 years so I thought, how bad can it be? Here is my short story.

Couple sitting in my row: Female on the phone, while they both talk during the ENTIRE movie.

When they weren't talking, the guy was moaning and making sounds during interesting parts of the movie.

The couple in front of me was talking on and off while the man played solitaire on his phone and read his text messages.

The teenagers behind and 2 the left were carrying on a conversation the entire movie.

The couple on the other side of me had a baby who was playing with a rattle until he finally fell asleep.

The couple behind my left ear was talking so loud I could not hear the movie. I tried my best 2 block it out but I finally snapped. I said as loud as I possible could, "CAN U PLEASE BE QUIET.....PLEASE, DAMN"! The last 30 minutes of the movie when off with a hitch. But I learned a lesson, I will NEVER go 2 a public movie theater again......PERIOD.

Dang, sorry about your experience Gray. I used to experience that too, but then I changed some things.

-I go during matinee times. There's less people, you can get the best parking spot and the concession stands aren't packed.

-I go a week or two AFTER the movie has opened. I hardly ever go to see movies anymore during the opening weekend for the reasons of encountering annoying people that you described.

-I switched movie theaters. I go to one that is more "adult oriented", (they sell alcohol there) than the one I was used to going to. They also have a "no talking on the cell phone in the theater" policy and strictly enforce it by having some employees randomly come in the theater at times to check. If you are on your phone, then they politely ask you to either get off the phone or go out in the lobby to take your call.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

LMAO, to me it seems the lesson you should have learned was to tell those morons to shut up earlier in the movie. They obviously listened to you when you finally did speak!

I applaud you for having the balls to tell everyone to shut the hell up.

I've done well just waiting 4 the DVD 2 come out. I'm going back 2 that and my solitude of my own theater. My 6 month wait 4 Prometheus is over tomorrow.

Holy Crap!!! That's awful... I've never heard of anything that bad... here in the Bay Area I've never seen anything like that in the last decade.

I would have gone to the manager...

I have solved this problem by seeing movies at the cinema that no one else likes. Films which you have to read for example are good at weeding out undesirables.

It must be "normal" 4 folks who go 2 the movies on a regualr basis.

That sucks, man.

I go to the movies sometimes every week and I seldom have issues like that. Guess Canadian's have better theatre etiquette. lol

I didn't mean that

I go to the movies twice a year, aprox, and I've never seen something as extreme as a guy talking out loud during the entire movie or making a nasty/loud mess with the popcorn

last time I encountered that kind of idiot was in 2010 (Avatar) and I didn't have to tell him to shut up because other folks did it BEFORE I even considered it...

I wonder if the theatre or the location that makes the difference. I don't think I've seen people be that rude in a long time. There have been some occasions where someone has their baby and it started crying and it took them forever to take it outside. Outside of that, no talking on phone, never a lot of out loud talking, sometimes whispers every once in a while but that doesn't bother me. Outside of people laughing or gasping at a particular part in a movie, maybe a comment from someone sitting close to me, most people are pretty quiet.

I agree, I am never going to see a movie that's new without expecting a bunch of yahoos all around me!

I saw Batman months after release, and it was not too bad, though one couple came in partway through the movie and sat there talking for ten minutes before leaving.

Best advice. The only problem is, you are probably talking about indies and foreign films, which probably lose the least in the transition to DVD because they are not effect-laden blockbuster.

It's too bad that if you want to see Avatar or Batman on the big screen you have to expect a bunch of idiots all around you.

I noticed that since I moved from LA to the Bay Area, that I don't like movies as much.

I think maybe there were so many movie theaters in LA that I tended to get a lot of empty theaters. Every movie seems to be crowded here.

I used to always think people would stfu in a theatre lol but sadly that is not always the case confused

Sometimes i think it seems to depend what movie it is, when my friend dragged me to paranormal activity 4 teenage girls where screaming constantly in theatre & telling the characters ''what to do'' and getting mad if they didn't listen neutral mad lol

When i saw Cloud Atlas & Sinister people where quiet the ENTIRE movie not a peep.

nastiest thing I've heard in a semi-empty theatre (the movie was Freddy vs Jason rolleyes)

(aproximate dialoge)

guy1: (talking out loud with his gf and making a mess)

guy2: shut the hell up...christ's sake

guy1: haha, fuck off

guy2: shut up at once!, I mean it!

guy1: u mean what?

guy2: that I'll call on security if you don't stop...making the things you're doing

guy1: I'd kill you as soon as the movie is over man, I mean it

guy2: (leaves the theatre, doesn't return)

Speed Racer also fits into that category. smile I saw that in an empty IMAX theater. Loved it!

I thought I was safe seeing the American remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo several weeks after it was released, but even though there was hardly anyone else in the cinema with me, a couple off to the side were talking and checking messages on their smart phones throughout the entire film. Another guy sitting near me went over and said something to them, but it didn't really help.

This clip has some good examples of how to handle people who behave like that in movie theaters.

ISn't there a little trailer with a request (demand) to turn of your phone?

If your not a doctor, you will be removed when you are talking on the phone during the movie, right?

In most Amsterdam (Pathe) theaters, you can tekst a number with your complaints. A steward will respond and intervene. I like that.

The only interruption during the new Bond movie, was the popping of Grolsch bottles by different people in the audiance. Wich is done as a joke (and I do find it very funny), because Heineken paid big time for the movie. I guess that's that strange ironic Dutch humour razz

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

I actually think it's best to go opening weekend for big films as with sold-out crowds folks are MORE apt to behave. It's when there's a sparse audience that people lose their manners more often.

That said, I've certainly encountered jerks in movie theatres but it's not all that often. I don't go as much as I used to, but when I do it's usually a good time.
