Rust and Bone (2012) - a struggling single father and a whale trainer bond over unexpected, life changing turn of events in both their lives. a beautiful story with excellent acting from both actors. 4/5

"what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"

I got a hankering for greek gods all of a sudden, so I saw these three movies in quick succession, and I think I should have done it in a different order err

1.

Immortals (2011) 4/5

OMG eek love this movie was a visual feast - Tarsem how I love thee worship

It had loads of GORN (not my cup of tea barf ) but aside from that, well I feel like watching it again hmmm Going to watch The Cell again too, can't remember that one so well.

2.

Clash of the Titans 1.5/5

What fuckery is this??? Why is Sam Worthington allowed to use his Australian accent in ancient Greece? confuse Compared to Immortals this movie is pale and washed out and everyone has crappy hairstyles.

3.

Wrath of the Titans 2.5/5

Only marginally better. There's no place for comic relief in a movie like this (unless it's Asterix - I love a good ham up when it has its heart in it), so Sam/Perseus and his throwaway lines like "Eh, whoa! Keep it straight. Have it look good." when taking off on Pegasus in front of Queen Andromeda for example was just DUMB.

I'm the mistake you wanna make

Intacto 3/5 Something along the lines of psychic vampires except they draw on other people's luck. Kind of weird but not as intriguing as it looked.

A concentration camp survivor named Samuel Berg (Max von Sydow), a preternaturally lucky fellow, runs a European casino. One of his workers is Federico (Eusebio Poncela), a man who "steals" other people's luck merely by laying a hand on them.

When Samuel Berg has a falling out with Federico and takes away his powers, Federico sets out to find the luckiest man alive (Leonardo Sbaraglia), the lone survivor of a plane crash, in order to use his powers to overpower Samuel Berg in the one game he has never lost: Russian roulette.

I'm boycotting this movie right now. Just on principle. It's silly, but I can't help it. I'll get over. Eventually.

Just saw this yesterday. I loved it! I give it a solid B+.

Sean Penn is pretty great in it, I have to say. It's a bizarre idea and it's pulled off quite well.

I should see this. Sean Penn looks like one of the older goths at the clubs I went to in the 90s.

Have you seen The Perks of Being a Wallflower yet? When I saw it I thought it was a very Carrie movie.

It IS a very Carrie movie. biggrin One of my favorite books, in fact, so I was a bit worried about the adaptation but it was just lovely.

I've been hearing a lot about this, & want to see it very badly. But I still haven't seen The Master, or Looper, or any of the other movies I'd intended to see in the past three or four months, so get in line Holy Motors.

Documentary on a group of people living in New York's underground subway system. Really interesting, pushes all the buttons you'd expect it to, though I did think it could have been a little shorter (even at 90 minutes).

The Sesssions (2012) - A man in an iron lung who wishes to lose his virginity contacts a professional sex surrogate with the help of his therapist and priest.

Sweet, but not too sweet thankfully. Supposedly it strays a lot from the real life account of the subject. Regardless, it's a very nice film. star star star 1/2

Much, much better than I anticipated.

Maybe since it bombed @ boxoffice I had really low expectations.

Need to see it again before committing to either a 4/star or dropping it down to three.

Black Narcissus (1947) - After opening a convent in the Himalayas, five nuns encounter conflict and tension - both with the natives and also within their own group - as they attempt to adapt to their remote, exotic surroundings.

I won't post the trailer because I feel it gives too much away if you've never seen the movie. Deborah Kerr and Kathleen Byron are excellent as the opposing nuns. And I know it was how things were back then, but it's still distracting seeing white actors cast in the ethnic roles so minus points for that. star star star star

True crime drama, not cheap or exploitive. It probably won’t leave anyone feeling too good about life or yourself for having watched it, but I expect that’s what the filmmaker set out to do and he did it really well. It’s grey and dreary and depressingly believable.

En kongelig affære / A Royal Affair (2012) - A young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician - and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever.

Very good, but it didn't wow me like period pieces of this nature usually do. star star star 1/2

Skyfall.

Beautifully made film. Amazing how they kept the plot rolling so well that you didn't realise the film goes for a whole 2 hrs, 20 mins. Not your average Bond movie, which is a good thing.

Rosenstrasse

Rosenstrafze 3/5 WWII Nazi Germany story about a group of Aryan women who were married to Jewish men, and a descedent of a Jewish woman married to an Aryan man. Interesting.

Youth Without Youth

Youth without Youth 1/5 Booorriiing. I found nothing cerebral about it. Sappy and disjointed maybe. Old man 80ish gets to be a younger man, 40ish again and gets to witness some things over the next 20 years from being chased by the Nazis to man walking on the moon, falls in love again with a early 20something loses love again, suddenly gets old again dies. Or was it all just a dream WTH!
