So in short, NO NEW YORK RESIDENT called for this. Like I thought. It's all Bloomberg, man.

The list is so long on the do's and don't. I know that artificle sweetners do me badly if I consume a lot of it, but I consider getting the soda it's a little treat for me since I don't eat anything else there since whatever they pop the popcorn in upsets my stomach, and it supports the theatre a little, I like my little theatre I don't want them to shut it down like so many others.

food service? really?
then they aren't serious. when i was drinking soda, i wouldn't buy it from a movie theater because it costs too much and you can get way more from a store or convenience store for way less.
someone didn't think this out.

We don't. We need to make it smaller. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Well it IS the Bloomberg administration. Since when have they thought?

We need to take away Uncle Sucker's Big Gulp. (<-- See what I did there?)
What I don't get is why people aren't deeply offended that their government thinks they are too stupid to conduct their lives as they see fit. Or that they don't understand how idiotic it is to think a government can change human nature - or that human beings are perfectible. That is just the height of folly. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

err I need more than 16 oz of pop when I eat spicy KFC, or is that outlawed in NYC too?

This is all smoke and mirrors to divert attention from a multitude of sin.
Once again, instead of regulating large corporations, legislate the individual.
Stop allowing huge food processing/ food growing conglomerates to dump fake additives into foods.
Yes, process foods need some additives, like preservatives for example, but PINK SLIME???
Individuals are responsible for their own choices. Government is responsible for insuring that entities, like private and public corporations, operate in a safe, ETHICAL manner.

I am prepared to live with that, if only because it beats the hell out of thinking your fellow citizens are idiots or monsters - both of which I have been called. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I agree with this but really the part I bolded.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Pretty much. When will they get it that legislating us is NOT the way to go?

You don't think that people will just complain that the government is trying to tell them what they can and can't eat even with shit like this?
I dunno, it's just a really different mindset in the country I live in, I guess.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
So, what, you can be much more dramatic than calling size restrictions on poisonous and unhealthy drinks the same as fascism?
Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. I'm calling a spade a spade.
Why aren't you mad that sodas don't come in 164oz portions? What's stopping you from buying 12 20oz sodas? [Edited 9/14/12 13:27pm]

Most Americans are completely addicted to the concept of Freedom. You hit the nail on the head that they would complain about additives being removed.
I love that some of the holier than thou freedom fighters in this thread act like there aren't people with even less standards than theirs. As if governments, theoretically put into power by the people, don't have the right to make these kinds of laws.
It's not a secret that drinking sodas make you fat and diabetic. This is not something that nobody knew about. And 2/3 of the folks in this thread make fun of fat people anyway. Vicious cycle.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
And you see something wrong with the concept of "freedom"? I guess like JustErin stated, maybe it's really just a different mindset...different countries & all (San Francisco is a nation all unto itself, I get that )
Don't know about your neck of the woods, but around here people are actually turning AWAY from "additives", so I'd love to see the demographics on those who yearn for the stuff. I mean, there's all kinds of people on this planet, so I'm sure they're out there.
I don't understand what you're getting at with the "less standards" part.
See my response about shame for the last part. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

You don't give a damn? Really? You seem awfully overheated for someone who doesn't give a damn.
I think that if someone would buy a 164-oz. soda, someone would sell one - and there'd be absolutely nothing wrong with that. What stops me from buying 12 20-oz. sodas is that I don't want 12 20-oz. sodas. But the fact that I don't want them doesn't mean nobody else should be able to have them, either.
It's called freedom. And it's being chipped away bit by bit. If you don't give a damn about that, I feel sorry for you. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Freedom has been used loosely by people who don't understand it. No wonder people go on about not caring but then going off because someone has a different point of view.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Freedom for me, but not for thee.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Don't be foolish.
If you want more drinks, buy more drinks. Nothing is stopping you. There is no limit to how many sodas you can buy. Nobody is stifling your great need for sugar.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Of course I don't find anything wrong with freedom. I said that most Americans are addicted to the concept. They have no real idea what the hell they are going on about. As is evident in this thread when folks suggest their freedoms are being impinged.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
OK...before my ranting thread gets moved to P&R, if the soda ban isn't what you're really discussing, then let's deal with what we really are discussing http://prince.org/msg/105/387239

Sure but I would be happy the government is protecting me from that shit.

This is what some of us have been saying throughout this thread. But others love their faux outrage.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The same people who introduced supersized portions of things are probably -behind the scenes- the ones planning to benefit most from their removal.
Get people hooked on large amounts of chemically altered, unhealthy foods. Then downsize the portions, and those who are hooked on them will just buy double as much.
When it comes to worrying about the government dictating what and how much the run of the mill citizen puts in his mouth, save your energy. They already do. If you will, so will I
