But why do you think it's crazy?

As far as I'm concerned they could ban all soda's and junk food altogether.

I have no idea why anyone would think this is crazy.

Everything you buy is sold in certain quantities, so this is the new limitation per unit.

If you want to bloat yourself with more of this shit, buy more.

Proud to say that I have never in my life had a Big Gulp. I don't know why they were an option in the first place.

Ack! We wonder why there's so much diabetes here.

http://www.fatsecret.com/...ain-drinks

When I was a teenager, one of the best parts of summertime was heading to 7-ELeven on a hot day and buying a SUPER Big Gulp, mixing 3 or 4 different sodas in one.

As of turning 40, I can honestly say that I've had maybe 2 Big Gulps in the past 2 years, and I'm sure I didn't even finish drinking the whole thing. This even though I have a 7-Eleven across the street from my office (which I visit daily).

Gluttony is an evil that our society has to deal with, but not through legislation IMO.

There is no legislation on gluttony.

It's crazy because I don't need the government to FORCE me to eat a certain way.

As an adult living in a "free" society, I am aware that eating a greasy cheeseburger is not exactly in my best interest, or that I should limit my sugary drinks intake...but I don't need a LAW to force me. I know it's extreme, but do you want some lawmaker to next decide that sushi is too dangerous and outlaw that? Or that creamy cheese sauces mixed with pasta could draw a fine for the high cholesterol levels?

The government already does this and has for years. Absinthe, unpasterized milk, certain cheeses, fruits, fish, foie gras, cavier, etc. are all banned in the US or certain states. The municipal government isn't banning soda, they are just limiting the maximum quantity that can be purchased at restaurants and movie theaters. According to the article you posted, convenience stores (which I think 7-11 would be considered) will still be able to sell quantities over 16 ounces.

outlawed sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces nearly everywhere they are sold, except groceries and convenience stores.

Maybe the government should focus more on laws requiring reading comprehension. wink lol

I just thought about it. I couldn't get my jumbo size Coke Zero at the movie theatres anymore, if I lived there. That would be a bummer, it's become a tradition.

No, you can't. But they'll still charge the jumbo price!

(Not that there's anything wrong with that. If people want to pay a ridiculous price for a soda, it's their funeral. This is why I carry a big purse. lurking )

But why not? The acid in those will rot your teeth. And a lot of people react to non-caloric sweeteners (like aspartame) as if they were sugar.

That's what is so ridiculous about this. It's not based on science or reason. They're simply doing it because they can. And the sheeple just go along with it.

Pretty soon, we'll have the Dietary Stasi all over the damn place.

Diet sodas do bad for your health as sugary sodas. I mean if they were that concerned about sodas period, take them out but this shows how stupid this policy is. But of course some folks in this country are okay with the government being bullies.

That's the whole point. People no longer can be trusted to limit themselves, so daddy Man has to do it for them. Apparently.

Haven't found it yet but I've seen that apparently they limited it in restaurants and movie theaters. I don't know if anyone was really complaining about this that was a resident of New York.

Too few people understand that "a government big enough to give you everything you want is a government strong enough to take everything you have."

When they showed that video at the Democratic convention that said, "the government is the only thing we all belong to" a chill ran through me. We do not "belong to the government." The government belongs to us.

Ohhhhh artificial sweetners are big business. Monsanta a chemical/GMO company with ties to aspartame. Ppl are worried about big government, we need to look st big corporations like chemical companies involved in our food/drinks.

I guess that is for another forum though. (P&R)

According to the press release you can get to from the homepage of nyc.gov:

Earlier today, the New York City Board of Health passed the Administration’s proposal to limit the size of sugary beverages sold in food service establishments to 16 ounces in order to combat the growing obesity epidemic that is taking the lives of 6,000 New Yorkers every year.

...

The Administration first proposed the new regulation in May to combat the growing obesity epidemic.

"The Administration" referring to the Bloomberg administration.

By the way, the press release also says,

The regulation will apply to any food service establishment that is regulated by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene: restaurants, mobile food carts, delis and concessions at movie theaters, stadiums and arenas.
