All the fashion experts, please help. What is a pared down bag? Thanks a lot. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

...generally it is used in aesthetic context to mean slightly worn or diminished in appearance (but not in a negative or unattractive way); the phrase is also often used to describe a look which is relaxed, casual, or minimalist. [Edited 8/27/12 6:12am]

Yup. "Pared down" is the opposite of overdone. It just means the object in question isn't big or showy.
Two examples, both by Michael Kors (for an apples to apples comparison)...
Pared down...

Not pared down...

Thanks a lot guys.
I came across another thing: "girl who dresses très-jazz’" "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

...and sure enough, the bag that is not pared down made my eyes spin & got me a little dizzy as soon as I saw it
Nothing like a pared down bag. Solid. Easy. Versatile. One of the best things a gal can pull out of her fashion bag of tricks .

Ya got me there, pal. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Up till now, I thought you were a guy. I don't know why. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Still don't get it. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Oh, another thing. Who is a "fashionista"? Here's the sentence:
However, in the more Spartan nineties "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Oh, come on, now. "Fashionista" is totally google-able. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I use it for someone who is really fashionable and sets the trend
Please don't ask what a recessionista is next... If you will, so will I

Yes, but some people told me (like thekidsgirl) it's someone with a high knowledge of fashion, a trend setter. But I've found a definition in a dictionary where it said it's a trend follower. So I am not sure which one. ANd I would also like to know whether it is a positive, negative or neutral word. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

A fashionista does not set trends. A fashionista is a quick adopter of trends - so, a follower.
It can be either positive or negative, depending on context. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Thanks for the explanation. This is my context:
"However, in the more Spartan nineties and noughties, the media and fashionistas rebelled against and mocked eighties’ fashion, but without giving us much of anything to take its place." "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Neutral usage, in that case. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Misspelled "fashionista?" We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Hmm, now I have even found this definition:
A person devoted to fashion clothing, particularily unique or high fashion.
A term used to define a woman with a penchant for shopping and a natural flair for combining both current and vintage fashionable trends.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fashionista
Wikipedia gives this definition:
Fashion victims are victims because they are vulnerable to faddishness and materialism, two of the widely recognized excesses of fashion, and consequently are at the mercy of society's prejudices or of the commercial interest of the fashion industry, or of both. According to Versace, "When a woman alters her look too much from season to season, she becomes a fashion victim.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fashion_victim
It's really hard to translate it into my langugae because we don't have such a word in our language, that's why it is important for me to know what it means, so that I can either describe it, or use some kind of a synonym. Ah, this is not fashion related, but I don't want to start a separate thread about it. I came across this sentence that I am struggling to understand. Could you please explain? The bolded parts are causing me troubles:
"Nice airport has also lost the five-star status, especially where parking is concerned. It used to be so easy, but the French powers that be have fiddled with the outside of the airport to such an extent that tempers fray everywhere."
the French powers - is that the government or coult it be nature? that be - does it mean "at that time"? tempers fray - does it mean "makes people angry"? "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

"the powers that be" are the decision makers
"tempers fray" people losing their patience and getting mad I'm the mistake you wanna make
