My Son Bought A Guinea Pig He bought it for his girlfriend cuz she had said she liked it which I think is so sweet, but her mother said she couldn't keep it she told my son he should've bought "shoes" My son was like so now I have the guinea pig and she is so cute, but what Im I supposed to do with it? BTW I thought since he bought it as a gift it was kinda messed up for her mom not to let her keep it-what cha think?

He can't take it back? I don't blame him about the shoes, but until girlfriend gets her own place he just might have to stick to gifts that don't smell, some people are hyper-sensative about any animals living in their house.

True I didn't think about it like that I think it was the way her mother said it and I told my son he probably should've asked if it was okay first, but I think he was trying to surprise her

Your son was being sweet. I for a minute was wondering why he didn't keep it and let his girlfriend come over and visit it, but then I remembered he's off to college.
Honestly, in all the different kinds of pets my kids had, a guinea pig was never one of them so I don't know what they do, or what one does with them.

He asked if he can keep it in his dorm I don't know-he leaves tomorrow. By me having to work I really don't have time to take care of it. I think Im gonna find someone who would like to have it as a pet He went with his girldfriend to Petco and bought all this stuff for it even little cupcakes so Im stuck with all this stuff

Guinea Pigs are really not high maintenance and they don't smell as long as you keep the cage clean. Just give her food & water obviously, have some little toys and stuff to play with in her cage so she won't be bored out of her mind. Be sure you interact with her, it doesn't have to be every day just enough to where she is comfortable and used to being handled.
They like to get fresh fruits and vegtables as a treat occasionally, and maybe let her out into the yard or whatever in one of the little runs so she can get some fresh air. ~ You're a desire, I get higher every time I speak your name ~

Thank you so much-this is helpful. I think I wanna keep her what kind of lettuce/veggies do they like? and Disney is beautiful

lovely little creatures. Get a large cage fill approx with 4 inches shredded paper, little amount of clean hay. Make a den, get a large paper tunnel so it can hide put toys in cage, wood for piggy to gnaw on. Side bottle full of water, some forage grass to eat also guniea pig museli and nuggets. Handle little one as much as you can and it will become very friendly oh and get a small baby brush and brush coat every two day. You can get everything from a good pet shop. Our one use to follow us around room and do little tricks to get treats and had the most cutesy squeak to get our attentions but don't leave it outside, guinea pigs love company in doors. Tell your son it was nice thing to do but really do not give Animals as presents unless living with each other and both agree to wanting pets. Enjoy little one it will bring you much joy.

So...If I let it out in the house it won't try to hide and such? and we bought wooden chew toys and hay for it I will tell my son-I guess he learned a lesson and I hope it didn't hurt his feelings to much. I think he just wanted to give her a present before he left for college

Aaaww! That was very sweet of your son. I had a guinea pig as a child and my nephew now has one. I was about 6 or 7 when I got mine, but I can't remember ever smelling it. My nephew's never said he's smelled his either. I think they're pretty easy to care for......keep the hay fresh, keep water in the botter, keep food in the bowl, give them some treat....DONE!
They don't live very long.....maybe 5 - 6 years. So don't stress over it. Enjoy!

Your sons got a good heart and your a very good mama and a new mama to guinea pig

Okay at least I know I'm on the right track my son cleaned her cage today and we put fresh food, hay and water in there and they told him to give her Vit C so we did that I guess I will eventually not be afraid and take her out of the cage Ya'll gone have Nursey running around after her

We had one of them in blue and he liked to gnaw on it and turn it over. We would find him sitting in it looking proud with himself

I wouldn't let my daughter accept a rat as a gift either!

Put it outside. It'll soon wander off and find another home.
