No "50 Shades of Grey" thread?

...Or is it one of those "things" no one wants to talk about? *smirk*

By the way I found this link in the comments section of a blog post about the book (NSFW obviously):

Thread is here now already, so it's pretty much a done deal whether you want it or not.

No one is forcing you to reply either...if you don't like it, just scroll on by it.

I work in Barnes & Noble part time, and we have those books (50 Shades of Gray, ...Darker, and ...Freed) in three locations in the store: behind the register, in the bestsellers' bay, and at the customer service desk.

We also have the series in large-print, in Spanish, and as a boxed set.

Now there is a parody book called "50 Shames of Earl Gray". falloff

  • Women come in telling me that they had borrowed the book and had to give it back before finishing it, so they need their own copies. reading
  • I've had two different men tell me that they've read them, and that they're better than Christian Gray. rolleyes
  • Couples come in all hugged up and buy it like it's an instructional manual. giggle
  • My favorite sale was a group of teenaged girls who pooled their money and were giggling their butts off the the whole time I was ringing them up. It reminded me of that book "Forever" that we sneaked back in the day. lol

I have no interest in reading them. Maybe when they're finally on clearance or something. shrug

I liked the one comment .... from a female ... which didnt like the book - but said "some people make fantasies (up in their minds) , but i make plans " .

There was one week where at least 2 or 3 people a day asked me if i read it... and they liked to quote the book a lot.

Especially some line about i don't make love i fuck.. and people think it's funny or clever and say it a lot to me and i'm like confused uhhhh um err ok.

But the book just sounds like soft core porn, i don't get the big deal hmmm

I couldn't agree more.

The writing is child's play, the content however...

Exactly. I found it on my mom's night table (shudder) and glanced through it. Terribly written, and really quite lame not sexy or dirty at all.

I've read some amazingly hot smut...this shit was embarrassing awful.

I got through about half of the book and gave up. I found it kind of corny and badly written. And I didn't find it sexy. Maybe I didn't get to the good parts? confuse

I was curious too. So I managed to find the first two books online...read the entire first one and about a quarter of the second.

No one under drinking age has any business anywhere near the book.

And really it's perverse that so many women consider the male character, Christian Grey a heartthrob cuz he's basically a stalker and abusive boyfriend, the entire story is actually pretty damn disturbing...having said that, I won't lie, the fucked-up part of myself is just as gaga over this totally fictional guy.

The comment from the female you know about "plans" made go into the "Who Farted?" face...then when I went to reply, my Org greeting strangely said exactly what I was thinking basically

I don't care 4 one night stands with trolley cars that juggle 17.

Really I'd rather fantasize about stuff or read about it or watch other people do it than go out and do everything myself firsthand. Some people might think that's stupid or sad, I actually think it's smart.

Y'know, people talk shit about the books (and to some extent I'm right on board with them, I just don't feel like going into all the negatives of the books right now), but the love scenes, while graphic, are actually kinda hot. Actually though it might depend on how far off the deep end you go; if you're into some really kinky or really twisted, sick shit, the books probably will bore the shit out of you.

hmmmm.....

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk:P, but i really don't get a lot of these book series.

Twilight

Hunger Games

50 Shades Of Grey

They all have insane hype and most are pretty average book's, yet people eat them up and the media.... idk.

I just don't get how these certain series get so big & hyped.

I bought the first Twilight book after I heard everybody raving about it...got a couple dozen pages in, thought, "This shit is boring", then I put it down and never bothered with it again and haven't gone near the movies.

Hunger Games doesn't even sound interesting to me, so I won't even humor it.

Harry Potter sounds boring as shit to me too so I never bought any of the books or watched any of the movies.

Honestly, this is probably the worst book ever written in terms of execution, and I doubt you'll find anybody with a functioning brain that will tell you otherwise. The whole draw where this book is concerned, are the love scenes, and the character Grey, who I think is probably one of the most interesting characters to come along in a while, and a lot of the best lines in the book come out of his mouth - "I'm 50 shades of fucked up", that kinda thing.
