Computer Geeks: SSD vs HDD I have two computers desktop (OS Win XP3 & Vista) and a notebook. I'm thinking about uping the anti and installing a Solid State Drive in each vs the traditional Hard Disk Drive. Anyone have any experience with these SSD's? Tell me the pros are any cons. Thanks

SSD are far better than HDD imo. No spinning disc in a SSD whatsoever, they're much faster with loading stuff & far more stable. Apple uses SSD in their stuff laptops, Ipods etc. [hence the price & speed of their products]. I would have a few myself if I had the $ to get them right now. I used them before on others computers & I really like them. They far more expensive though, so it depends on if you want to spend more for less space atm. There are really good HDD's out there too ..... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

SSD's are much faster, but cost more per GB. there are also reliability issues with some makes/models as it's newer tech
i have SSD's in 4 of my pc's and it makes a big difference, especially to older machines
currently 120gb drives are hitting a nice price point of around £50 and 240gb drives are getting near the £100 mark. in a desktop you can use a 120gb drive as boot drive and keep storage on a normal HDD. on a laptop, it just depends on how much space you really need. you get another benefit in a laptop as they use less power and generate less heat, thus less power means the battery lasts longer. plus with no moving parts you can't damage data if you drop the laptop or jerk it about
i say go for it | |

Thanks for your advice.
The needed push to go for for it. The Vista ( the worst computer I ever bought in life) notebook couldn't be upgraded to Windows 7 so I need all the little advantages I can get. I just recieved my RAM today and maxed both machines out. These machines will house all of my iTunes music so I can homeshare on the other computers.

How much do the SSD's cost?

I get all my computer parts from www.crucial.com.
For my laptop the SSD cost:
32GB = $44.99 64GB=$79.00 128GB=$112.00 250GB= $160.04 512G=$400.00

Ah I see. The 32 and 64GB are good prices...

The 128 3Gb/s isn't bad either: I posted the wrong price that was for the 128 6GB/s.

maxing out your RAM makes a big difference, especially for old computers. for new ones you might not notice much over 8gb of RAM, but for old it usually does. an SSD also makes a big difference. so an old PC with RAM increased from 1gb to 4gb and an SSD will bring it back to life

That IS a nice price... | |

I've had my Macbook Air for about a year. I love it to bits. One of the best things is the SSD. It is lightning fast and instantly responsive. I also love the fact that 90% of the time, the computer doesn't make any noise whatsoever. There is no spinning hard disc to be kept cool by a fan. The only time the fan goes on is when I'm watching long flash videos because the processor gets hot from that LOL. So, as an aside, I'm glad flash is on it's way out.
I haven't encountered any negatives from SSD, but big positives. I guess the extra cost is the only thing, but you can't get this model of computer without SSD anyway so it didn't factor into my decision. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

Price point aside...........I've heard that there are some reliability issues with the SSD's and I don't know if the sample size is large enough 2 know how accurate those issues may be.

Yeah, I've heard that too but it depends also what manufacture you're buying you SSD from. As far as the HP Pavilion dv6000 series notebook, the first HDD only lasted for 18 months and I barely used it. So, the SSD can't be any worse. I ordered the 250GB today; someone did recommend to forgo transfering my data and go with a clean install.

These issues make me nervous. My new Korg Kronos keyboard uses a SSD.....I hope it last.
