I've been going to the theater pretty often lately. I like the surround sound, huge screen, cold room,

strangers in the dark feel of it all. I also (sometimes) like to hear/see other people's reactions to

the movie, see what surprises or causes people to laugh, clap, cry etc. I will usually end up talking

to someone I don't know about the movie and how they felt about it.

I don't want any of this when I am watching a movie at my house. If I find a random stranger in my

house things are going to be all kinds of bad.

We used to take the kids to EVERY damned Pixar/Disney/Dreamworks movie that came out. It was our "thing". And it was expensive!!!

Now they're picky about what movies they want to see. The little one especially (he hates superhero movies because he wants the bad guys to win faint).

I like going to see a film in a movie theater. The sound is better, the screen is (usually) enormous. It's a different experience. I cannot imagine NOT having seen Avatar on the big screen. The experience at home is more subdued.

That being said...3D is a big damned waste of money. I saw Prometheus and the latest Spiderman in 3D and I could've skipped the added expense on both. Not worth it.

I certainly do still enjoy going to the cinema. I go on average once a week. It's within walking distance of where I live, tickets only cost $7, and because it's an art house theater, there are never any annoying teens of kids making noise. Perfect for me.

You're very lucky to have such a place on your doorstep. All we've got where I am (Kent, UK) is the typical soulless, characterless multiplex on the outskirts of town... sad

Make the most of it before they knock it down and stick a Starbucks in its place...!

The only movie coming out soon that I will likely see at the theater is the first movie in "The Hobbit Trilogy."

But that has just as much to do with it being filmed at 48 FPS as anything.

other than that I may go see Star Wars and ESB when they come out in 3D.

Mostly I Rather wait till they are on DVD.. rent for a buck or two and be happy.

I still go to the cinema pretty regularly (at least a couple times a month). It's one of my favorite things to do when there is not much to do.

It is kind of hard for me to focus on films when I am home sometimes, so I like to see new stuff that I am excited about in theatre first... Plus, I'm not a very "home-y" person anyway and the way modern society is shifting towards a preference for doing nearly EVERYTHING at home now makes me kind of sad. I like having a date at the cinema on a Sunday afternoon, even if it's just with myself.

If you will, so will I

I'm sorry but I must . . .

'Lord of the Rings' Trilogy. 'The Hobbit,' is the book that preceded the LOTR Trilogy.

Now I must: Are we talking about books or movies? The book the Hobbit is being made into 3 movies. A Trilogy. The first in the trilogy is set to come out this December.

Must admit, I do miss those proper dates I use to go on with my better half back in the day, when we first started dating....hands touching in the popcorn, sneaky kiss during the boring parts. Didn't really matter if the film was rubbish! biggrin

Mind you, the first film I took my wife to was the Blair Witch Project....such an old romantic! lol

Right, and director Peter Jackson is now going to film a trilogy about The Hobbit.

Total Recall, is starting to look very interesting to me, so it will have to be in the movie theatre. But I've decided to skip 3D where I can, I'm just not that blown away by it, in fact I really can't see a difference.

I'm planning to see Dredd, which I think it's 3D regardless, though I a bit apprehensive about it, the highly violent part is worrying me, I have a level and I think this is going to exceed it but so far RT has given it 100% which is no big deal, but since I want to see it anyway it gives me hope.

Star Trek 2 wrapped but that's not coming out this year but it'll have to be in the theatre too. The Hobbit is a must, since I ignored the whole LotR thing while it was in theatres.

I've been 2 the theatre once or twice since I built my own 7.2 surround, THX, 120" joint.

No drama, no driving, no fuss.

When I lived in LA I feel like I saw practically every movie that came out. I saw 1-2 per week.

Since moving to the bay area in '97, I have probably seen less than one movie per year. My gf doesn't really like the movies, and now I am not totally comfortable there, either!

For my money, there's still nothing quite like the social transaction of waiting a bit in line, selecting the snack of choice, then sitting down to catch good trailers and an even better feature in the confines of a comfy theatre, a gigantic screen, cranking surround sound and a fun, engaged audience.

That said, my life is increasingly busy, and I'm finding myself increasingly more discriminating of which titles warrant time taken out of my week.

Co-sign on that! ^

Although from about early autumn through the holidays I'm seeing a lot of movies in the theater because that's when the best flicks are released.

I doubt that was the reason: cable/VHS was in its infancy then

and I don't miss those days at all!!! lol

I'm also including network tv as the next phase of possible viewing. Other movies were already coming out very soon after theatrical release back then ( I saw The Howling, American Werewolf, Conan, Star Trek 1 & 2, Tron, ALIEN, The Shining all at home within a year or so of their theatrical release). My friends and I were in anticipation of those two movies in particular.

Cable was already a huge way to see movie as early as 1981, because that's how I was seeing everything I wasn't allowed to or couldn't get to in the theaters.

Star Wars was rereleased (maybe twice?) in cinemas instead of coming up on cable and Beta or VHS.

I still remember watching bootlegs of Star Wars and ET on blank black Beta tapes before they were released. Those were instances where a theater owner was paid and someone set up a tripod and a big ole camera/VCR setup and recorded it.

I lived a block away from a single screen theatre that played Star Wars for a full year when it came out! There was nothing to do but go see that movie over and over and over...

Love the old school UK cinemas...always pleased to hear there's some about. Whereabouts you based?

I think our nearest old cinema is a tiny one in Broadstairs near the beach...red velvet flip-up chairs, cheap boxes of popcorn, welcoming foyer...happy days! biggrin
