DO YOU BELIEVE IN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE?

Could it be that there is a natural cure for every form of illness and disease known to man? What if the pharmaceutical companies were lying to us and instead of taking the little white pill all we needed was a plant?

Discuss. coffee

Well I'm a true believer in ionic silver solutions, so much so I now make it myself. My mom is prone to MRSA and Pseudomonas and the silever solution has done wonders to ward off infections.

I give it to my small animals, (rabbits & Guniea Pigs) and they haven't had a single respiratory infection since.

I drink it daily and I havent had a cold in three years. I apply it topically on my daughter for her eczema. My girls also ingest it daily and they haven't been sick in years!

But I don't consider it alternative medicine since silver is used in medical applications everyday. I do believe there is a reason why they don't give the benefits of silver to the general public..

Face it...we're all going to die. faint dead

Having said that, it seems with all of the commercials for prescription medication on TV that list all of the hazardous side effects, you're better off staying away from conventional medicine. That's not to say that some conventional medicine isn't good; some of the pain medication is quite good (but highly addictive if you're not careful). But a lot of ailments we suffer from came about from poor diet, lack of exercise, etc. Instead of being conscious of our boides and what we do with them, we look for an easy solution.

For instance, many doctors will rush to put people on statins for any heart issues with high cholesterol, but the side effect is that it actually weakens the heart. omg You'd be better off taking a B vitamin supplement along with some CoQ 10. And for diabetes, instead of taking insulin for type 2 diabetes or some dangerous drug, you'd be better off eating a low glycemic diet rich with vegetables and fiber and supplementing with cinnamon. The best low glycemic diet is the alkaline diet, which is good for regulating the bodies functions. I had serious acid reflux issues, but once I started experimenting with eating more alkaline foods, much of my stomach issues went away. biggrin

Well, depending on who you ask in pharmacy, you'll get mixed answers.

I personally do believe in alternative/hollistic medicine in that there is potential in this field. Digoxin, a drug used to treat congestive heart failure, is extracted from foxglove plants. nod

That said, that is not to say that form of medicine is any safer than conventional medicine or medicine that is synthetically made.

This includes vitamins or minerals sold over the counter. Just because it's "all natural", doesn't mean it can't wreck havoc in your body. For example, too much vitamin D (hypervitaminosis D) can cause kidney stones, hypercalcemia, and kidney damage.

Keep in mind also that a lot of these alternative or "all natural" measures are not always considered "drugs". They are considered "foods" and hence the FDA doesn't hold them to the same standards as conventional drugs. They are not given rigourous testing to determine safety or even efficacy.

I would suggest before trying a alternative approach to discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist.

I can vouch for the coffee cure!!!!

My ex has cured the kids' pinkeye with coffee. In a day it's gone.

Must be a Puerto Rican thing, huh? lol

Also - my late grandmother told a story how a relative in Mexico cured his diabetes on a diet of nopales (cactus) salad and pulque (fermented cactus drink).

Humans have had medicine for THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of years. Unfortunately we've forgotten or abandoned all that wisdom in favor of pills nowadays.

i do. but, it's important to remember that what we in america call 'alternative medicine' is, at times, originating from thousands of years of practical tradition in china, or elsewhere.

most pharmaceuticals are derived from plants. aspirin/salicylic acid is made from willow tree bark. digitalis is made from foxglove, etc.

currently, pharmaceutical companies have a vested interest in keeping americans sick. methods of treatment that are based in vitamin therapy (see, Dr. Burzynski cancer treatment re vitamin C) have been suppressed.

pharmaceutical companies do NOT want americans to discover that they can heal themselves through DIET.

the ultimate 'holistic' treatment is to eat a plant-based, nutrient rich diet. no ifs, ands or buts. however, in america the FDA and meat industries do not want us to do this.

it is much, MUCH better for the 'medical' and pharmacuetical industries that rule us to keep us all constantly unhealthy and contantly seeking medical care and treatment, enriching these industries.

What is your suggestion for people with mood disorders and depression issues then? I'm having problems with my moods and am afraid of detoxing or possibly altering my dose/adding to it, it's like they've already killed me either way sad

hug i have read some of what you've described in your fight for good health, keep the faith! you deserve to be happy and healthy. i do not know enough to say anything helpful regarding your care. if you are interested in alternative approaches it might be worth checking out some forms of acupuncture or massage, consult a nutrition expert. i hope you find what works because i love your posts on here. hang in there

xxaxx: I'm glad you love it, but it's a reality for me, and though life is good and I have lots to be grateful for, I'm living in a fog and realizing this now, and that is what affects my memory and concentration, and it's affecting my work too so I know I need help.

shanti: yes I definitely try to surround myself with positivity, but no one understands my manic episodes. I know it's unfair to them that I act up sometimes, but it's so hard to stop/shut up sometimes, and I've noticed I get like that more when I'm under stress fromsomething that happened, or coming up, or if it's a time of year that reminds me of something still upsetting me. I'm going to go switch to another psychiatrist in a few hours, but I doubt I'll get an appointment today though I wish I could. I want to see my old one just one more time too, but I don't find him helpful anymore. Though he was nice, he rushed me out, and would give me bad drugs that I knew wouldn't work. I feel like I know what to take better than he does and I'm not even in his field.

I believe in science.

If something is shown proven to work (by scientific method) then I believe in its efficacy. That could mean any discipline.

I also believe the health care industry in the US banks on US citizens being sick. Money and power corrupt and the most heavily commercialized treatment may not be the best one. It may have the most research because the most money has been put behind it.

It’s difficult to pick and choose, that’s why doing your own research, understanding studies and having trust in your doctor(s) are all very important.

Most things that would be considered “alternative” medicine I see as being great compliments to traditional western medicine. I think there’s a place for both.

And that's the thing, really. There are a lot of "experts" who say a lot of different things. I'm glad you called it a "discussion" as that's all it really is at this point.

I've been considering going back to school to study nutrition so I can have a better idea to better discern for myself.

I do think in the US a lot of our health problems come down to proper nutrition. It's a gigantic issue. Getting people to change habits, making organic, non-processed food more available, factory farming, GMOs, and so on. The issues are systemic. We need an overhaul of how we see food altogether.

I'm really trying to watch what I eat too now though I find that I eat more meals, though small ones, when my stress level is higher though I keep it healthy and barely eat junk food/sugar anyways, I overdid it with that in my teens and lost interest. I used to want to get into nutrition years ago and liked biology, but chemistry was way too hard, so that plan went out the window. Plus I can't cook to save my life, sad but true story. I urge you to definitely get into it if that's what you want, it sounds like an awesome career if you're passionate about it.

I do agree it's a discussion, and if no one is right or wrong, we can try what works for us based on what worked for others and figure out if that's the right regime. I have family in the medical field, and though I'm not in it at all, I sometimes read articles and like to share knowledge or make corrections about what current studies say compared to 20-30 years ago.

i still believe in checking with my doctor when an ailment goes on for more than 48hrs after using homeopathic medications.

however i do have a beef with a doctor who fails to be aware of the side effects of the medication they prescribe.

like in one case, a friend of mine was prescribed a medication w/side effects of coughing. well she had suffered for years w/bronchial colds. so when my friend began taking the dr. prescribed medication she developed a severe and continual cough. after going on line on her own and looking up the side effects of the medication, she discovered that one of the symptoms caused was coughing. also she found that a large group of persons that had taken the same medication were in the process of suing the pharmaceutical company that developed the med.

after my friend questioned the motivation of her doctor for giving her a medication with the coughing side effects and why was she prescribe the med when she was aware of her history of bronchistis. the dr answered only by saying all meds have side effects. so she changed doctors (after more that 10yrs), and got a better dr who prescribed a better med for the same ailment sans the coughing side effect.

problem is many doctors get some kind of perk from the pharmaceutical companies for pushing their med. many times the meds are not lab tested long enough before being put on market.

anyway here is one book i have on my bookshelf and read/use it often.

When my youngest was a baby, he suffered from bronchitis. He must've had delicate lungs b/c every cold turned into bronchitis.

It got so bad that he was on a nebulizer. Every damned winter, he'd get a cold, get bronchitis, and we'd bust out the nebulizer.

One day my ex's dad came up from Florida and made a special concoction. We had to order almond oil from the pharmacy, which he mixed with honey, cod liver oil, and the "oil" of beaten egg whites (for lack of better term).

After a couple of months taking a teaspoon of this daily, his condition cured.

To this day, he has never had bronchitis again (going on 8 years or so).
