Holiday? Where to?

Who's going on a holiday this summer and where are you going?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

i'll probably go over to a cabin in wisconsin on a lake. it's peaceful, quiet, and i'll spend a few days re-painting one face of the cabin, hi'll attend some estate sales, antique stores and fish fry type events. it's a totally backwoods holiday for me this year i hope.

Totally makes me think of this album (recorded in a cabin in the woods in Wisconsin... although I don't really know if the video relates lol ).

Cerebus has no "plans"... yet. But he has some ideas that may become plans. None of them involve leaving California, though. lol

ahhh wolves. lovely song. we have lots of wolves in MN and WI. alas, they were recently delisted from protection under the endangered species act, conditioned upon a five year moratorium on hunting of any kind.

then poof! the DNR simply caved to lobbying/special interest groups and the five year period has been eradicated. moreover, in june 2012 it was determined that, commencing this autumn, MN will have not only a wolf hunting season but a wolf trapping season as well.

i have no trouble with an eat or be eaten world where hunters actually need skill to stalk their prey, but imo allowing the numbers of 'permits' they propose, and allowing trapping which is a outlawed in places due to controversy, flies in the face of the agreed-upon environmental studies and is not good policy. quite a few people feel this way.

there was recently an open commentary on the MN DNR website, garnering overwhelming public outcry against wolf hunting/trapping, but the DNR just shrugged and let it be known that just because they'd conducted a public commentary period didn't mean they'd actually be listening to us. bah. i'm thinking i'll likely need to start a grassroots campaign to send the MN DNR some well-crafted correspondence on this issue nod

I told the kids that we'd go to Myrtle Beach this year.

My vacation is 2 1/2 weeks away, and I haven't reserved a room.

The affordable ones are all booked.

It was positively amazing. We only had 3 full days there and I wish I had more time.

Having visited in summer it never really got dark there. This pic was taken at about midnight. Note the sunglasses:

Here's a tip - if you're going in the summer and want to see the nature-y stuff, I highly recommend doing a little research and renting a car w/GPS and going on your own over doing a planned tour. We did the "Golden Circle" tour which is the most popular and we didn't feel like we had nearly enough time to spend in some of the areas and could have left out other parts of it. We would have preferred going our own pace and hiking all day.

If you visit in winter you might want to do the tour as driving can be scary and that may be enough to want the guidance.

It's pricey, but not as much as it used to be since they went bankrupt. Not sure if you're from the US, but our dollar goes twice as far as it did before their bank collapse.

Anyway - some pics:

Gulfoss (Note the people in the upper left side to get an idea of just how gigantic this was):

Hot Springs and geyser:

This is where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. The fissures are filled with amazingly pure clear blue water:

Anyway. Just a little taste.

Wow, great pics!

I'm not going on a holiday this year.

Doing fun things though, I'm moving to my new house.

Really look forward to it.

I hope to be able to have a fun Christmas Holiday this year.

BTW, keep posting the holdiay pics, I really love them

That sounds like a perfect holiday to me. Is it your own cabin?

Pictures of the cabin/lake/fish fry events?

A lake that is as big as Lake Tahoe must be impressive. Mind you, I come from a country where 35 km is a long distance!

The length of Holland is 300 km and width is 200 km. We’re not used to big open spaces.

Lake Tahoe must be so beautiful and grand. I would love to see it one day.

Actually, I would really like to travel through America and see the vast nature and cities like San Fransicso, LA and Dallas. I only know New York and have visited Boston.

Did the kids have ideas about other places they would love to visit?

What kind of things do they love to do? What makes them happy?

Can you find something that suits their idea of having fun and that is affordable for you?

Can you go camping with them? I really loved that when I was a kid. I experienced that as a great adventure, eventhoug it was close to my home.
