Have u seen that ESPN documentary on Chuck?

No, is it any good?

I recommend it. U will be surprised how much Rocky mirrors this guys career. Even down 2 him fighting a wrestler ala Hulk Hogans character.

As for the movies themselves, I think "Rocky III" is one of the greatest movies ever made!

I love that movie.

I've never seen "Rocky Balboa". I guess I should.

Yeah you should see it. It's not as great as the early Rocky movies, but it made for a great close out or "closure" movie for Rocky.

It's just good old ass kicking fun...............who cares about the script? I'll bet that is what they were thinking filming this.

Well yeah of course the action in it was on point...but I still cringed. lol Rocky III and IV were still watchable even though the script was kind of "lazy"...but The Expendables is along the lines of Rocky V to me, a completely shitty script. lol But still I go see them movies because I love Sly too damn much. lol

I Agree! The Expendables to me was kind of boring.. firs off Mickey Rourke doesn't do SHIT that long knive ending with Jason Statham was insanly useless lol i was like will this damn movie end already razz

And lawd! i used to watch a lot of Dolph movies..... i see why he hasn't had a big movie in years. THAT FOOL CAN NOT ACT. I mean he is a great action star don't get me wrong. But Sly, Arnold, hell even Jean Claude can at least pull some emotions.

Dolph i cringed when he spoke... and when he tried to insult people during his fights i was like oh hussy please stop talking lol

Not to mention the fight at the end is the most realistic smile Sly even let Dixon give him a lot of real punches. He did the same with Dolph for Rocky IV but he got whooped lol

I've always loved these scenes. Especially the first one when Apollo tells it like it is to Rock.

The 2nd one....man I loved it when Rocky first cut Drago, the adrenline rush: "And he's cut, he's cut!!!!" Then right after, they go to the corner and Duke tells Rocky "You see, you see, he's not a machine, HE'S A MAN!" worship

Man I loved Duke too. Remember in II when he tells Apollo: "Man I saw you beat that (Rocky) man, and he kept coming after you. We don't need that in our lives. LET IT GO! LET IT GO!" lol

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Rocky III is best one and one of the great sequels in the franchise. What made it great was to see the chracter evolve and finally "make it" and have some money, as Rocky was as a struggling boxer in the first two films. I was happy to see him living a lavish lifestyle of a famous athelete, very true to life.

What also made Rocky III special, was to show the audience that money can't buy happiness, especially when you lose a loved one.

Great film and has a lot of sentimental value for me, as it was my first date film! wink

I don't know where she is now, but I still love2 her.

So true. III also has a special place in my heart because it showed that two boxers with strong personalities are able to bury the hatchet and help each other. Apollo Creed was a force to be reckoned with in Rocky I & II and EXTREMELY stubborn, so it was a breath of fresh air to see him in III that he was willing to put his ego to the side to help out a former rival...which made Apollo seem human.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Cerebus' two cents...

The first one is classic cinema. Gritty, hungry, genuinely uplifting - just an all around great movie. I mean, shit, it was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning three of them, including Best Picture and Best Director. Even the one-sheet is great...

The second one is a still great, but it was already heading into a more unrealistic entertainment type of vibe. It had more shine, more polish than the first one.

The third and fourth films are still good, but they have even more polish and shine and started to play too much to the need for suspending disbelief in order to get into what was happening. I still like these two, but not nearly as much as the first pair.

The rest, meh. No interest really. Five sucked and I didn't hate the last one, but I don't need to watch it again.

SPYZFAN1

I'm showing my age but I remember seeing the 1st "Rocky" at the drive in theater when I was a little dude. With the exception of "Rocky V" I enjoyed all of them.

I also loved watching and hearing the reactions of the audience in the theater. People screaming, cheering, laughing, crying and yelling at the screen..thinking that the characters could hear everyone in the theater. Everyone was so attached and drawn in..I think we all saw a little bit of Rocky in ourselves.

My fave is "Rocky II". He's still underground but on his way. Everyone loves "Rocky III" because of the great story (and Mr. T of course) but as the other orger said it was a little over the top.

I think Stallone did a great job closing it off with "Rocky Balboa". At first I didn't want to see it but like everyone, you're rooting and cheering for him near the end of the movie.

I think the "Rocky" films are a big part of pop culture and Americana.

Even though I know that the last one was, at least on the surface, a bunch of rehashed ideas and practically a remake of Rocky I, I still love it and it is easily one of my all time favorite movies. I never would´ve thought he´d manage to save that franchise and end it gracefully but he did. Rocky Balboa is a great movie about aging, mourning, loss, death, love, growing tension between father and son, the bad economy, the changing times.....I could go on and on. The last thing the movie is about is boxing. lol

I really love that last one, and Rocky I,II, III and VI are must-see movies.

I owe a lot to those movies. If it wasn´t for them, I´d be a different person.

Agree about Balboa. It is an incredible film. Sly put his heart and soul into that one and you could tell he was speaking as himself in some scenes.

1 and 2 are classics, especially 1. The original is one of the greatest Hollywood films ever. 3 and 4 are just action movies lol. They have messages, but they're so OTT and ridiculous that they don't even register....they completely erase the genius of the 1st two, even though they're enjoyable popcorn films.

5.....whatever.

Balboa, though, that is just as good or almost as good as the original and KoolEaze points out some reasons why. I felt so emotional at the end (i shed tears multiple times during) that i felt i had to change direction in life. In other words, get back on my feet and keep moving!

It was brilliantly shot, paced and acted. Sly aced it and closed Rocky's story PERFECTLY. As Kool said, it was anything but a boxing film (even though the fight was the most realistic and best), just like the original was anything but a boxing film. Balboa was a deep production. It was art. As time has past i have noticed people realising how special Balboa was and it's good to see. It's the ultimate send off, an emotional story of an old man in mourning, stuck in the past and trying to reach out to his distant son. A painful reminder of life's end and the speed in which life passes.

Like I said, I love parts 1, 2 and 6 the most but these days part 6 ("Rocky Balboa") is the one that I go back to the most. It´s not that I watch the whole movie every time but lately I catch myself watching at least a few scenes very regularly. Especially that scene where he talks to his son. It is, in my opinion, one of the most personal and most touching scenes in any movie, ever.

I really love this scene.

Part 6, "Rocky Balboa", is actually a very emotional movie with some very deep messages. It´s too bad that this little masterpiece will always be regarded as just another part of an overblown saga when actually it deserves to be regarded as a drama on its own, not just one of many sequels.

This scene here is an outtake and I think Stallone should´ve used it in the film. Too bad that this got deleted, I think it is a great scene.

Thats the good thing about the Rocky movies, is the sincerity of Stallone saying very cheesy lines like the clip you posted above but giving them enough conviction for them to be palatable. Not easy to do.

Stallone must be one of the few people to have his first ever screenplay win a best film oscar (he did not win best screenplay but was nominated). Hard to believe but back when first released, some critics probably saw him as the next Brando, but he chose the roles he played, and even though you get glimses of greatness ("cop land" for example), his role in the first Rocky is still very belieable, understated and still generally an excellent performance.

Bytheway, I must be the only one alive who doesn't mind "rocky v".

Beautiful scene.......Burgess was great in the role of Mickey.
