3/5 I liked it. Very low budget, handheld video camera intentially, used a lot of family, Grandma Betty was so cute. Gritty and very bittersweet.

THE AMERICAN DREAM centers on Luis, a young man who is rejected from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and decides to attend LA City College instead. Circumstances that seem to overwhelm his passage into manhood and his development as an artist force him to drop out of LACC and join the Marine Corp with his best friend Ronald. Armed with dreams that extend beyond their block, Luis and Ronald make a movie documenting their last 36 hours before shipping off to Afghanistan. In their darkest hour, they turn on the video camera for the last time and document the final moments of their journey home. They soon realize that their dreams and promises of a new life mean nothing in a place called War.

Uh, I skipped that, I believe it's too patriotic for my liking.

The 39 Steps (1935)

3/5

Early British Hitchcock film before he went to America and made most of his films there. Even though it uses the same elements Hitchcock was known for (wrongly accused characher on the run), it doesn't have that highly stylized look that were familiar with like in films like North By Northwest.

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus 2/5

nutty not my cup of tea AT all.

Fell asleep before it ended. Frustrating. Loved the look of it, and some of the absurdity, but it was hard-going to watch.

I sort of liked it, but Terry Gilliam's movies are just aesthetically unpleasant! Interesting & creative, but gross, grating & disturbing

There were so many incidental dialogues all over each other I couldn't follow, or more that I stopped being interested enough to try following it. I had no problem with people turning into other people, that was fine with me lol

Took the kiddies to see Ice Ice Age 4, I didn't think it was as good as the previous one, just a bit dark for a kids movie, a really mean pirate!!! Though the squirrel bits were as funny as per usual!! I think the kids were more excited over the preview for Madagascar 3, which is out next school holidays. 3/5

Also watched Interview with a Vampire, not with the kids, how yummy was Antonio Banderas as Armand and Brad Pitt - yum !!! Thought Tom Cruise was good as Lestat, but I didn't read the books until after I saw this movie. 4.5/5

I knew I was missing something. Ice Age seems to the one kiddie movie I really enjoy.

Last night I saw:

Chronicle (the directors cut) 3/5
Very entertaining - I thought it would be crap

Grave of the Fireflies 5/5
Just beautiful.
Would you believe it didn't make me cry? Because it wasn't a manipulative tearjerker, desire it being a devastating story.

I don't think i made it twenty minutes into that movie. I found it far too painful to watch. Maybe I'll try one day, but I don't think it will be any time soon.

I'd been putting off seeing it - I've had the movie for at least a year and every time we had movie night I would say. I not tonight I don't want to put myself through that sad but it's so beautifully animated, you know from he start Seita and Satzuki are completely doomed, in a way for me I could emotionally prepare myself. It has moments of joy and utter despair. A masterpiece.

Magic Mike (2012) - a known local stripper (Tatum) takes a newcomer (Pettyfer) under his wing & shows him the ropes to making easy money. I'd have given it 5 stars for Pettyfer's ass but 3/5

the only thing about it that felt like a Soderbergh film was the colour scheme, otherwise the bland story, poor plot & set of actors (McConaughey aside) must've been what caused it to be so uninspired.

Charming in some spots. Just fine if you like Allen-esque movies with chatty, over-analytical, slightly neurotic characters with the city itself being the real co-star of the movie. I like Julie Delphy's work so I'll give it a 3/5.

MAN-!!!

I had forgotten about this movie!!!

What would you rate it nowadays???

I watched this recently. I like the songs, and I like the look. Some of it was cute.

The big problem is with the sound. It is really hard to understand Robin Williams, and not just because of how he is talking. They could have made his voice sound clearer. For some reason all of the audio has a very detached quality. It's weird, and makes it really hard to enjoy.

So...it was on TV this weekend, and I sat and watched it with the kids.

star star / 5

It had potential.

The sets were great (amazing to think what Hollywood used to build).

But the plot was crappy (OK, kids movie, I get it, but still...), the music numbers were BORING AS HELL (most of them IMO), and (as you mentioned) the audio was terrible.

Shelley Duvall played a wonderful Olive Oyl and Robin Williams made a good Popeye. His mumbling was true to the original cartoons, but made for a poor big screen performance.

shrug

Yeah, I just don't really get that movie. You say it's a kids movie, but to me it really has nothing that kids are particularly going to like (or adults for that matter!). It looks like a kids movie, but is it? I don't know what they were going for!

Like you say, it has some good stuff, particularly visual, and Shelley Duvall is inspired casting, but overall, I agree. 2/5

Friends With Benefits

Kind of clever, kind of cute. But ultimately this is just another cliche romantic comedy. I also thought it was not particularly sexy. Mila Kunis is sexy, but the sex was not. I laughed a few times inside my mouth, but I don't think sound ever came out of me lol So not really hilarious.

Nothing exactly awful about it (compare to Ashton Kusher's emotional breakdown at the end of No Strings Attached eek ) but nothing to write home about.

And someone said "this movie made me feel fat, unsuccessful, boring, and old." lol So I suppose where it really fails is in bringing you into the fantasy.

2.5/5

I can't see this but I'm assuming it's this... which I saw and liked. It does say Another Earth next to the red x, but sometimes there are two movies with the same titles floating about, so I'm not sure.

Yes!!! He was cringeworthy! I accept that his music isn't my cup of tea and I don't hold that against him, and I'm sure that growing up as youngest of 10 kids would have been difficult and maybe that is why he IS so attention seeking? I dunno - he's the kind of person I go out of my way to avoid in real life!
