TBH I didn't like 1/2 of the films I listed upon initial viewing, come to think of it, I didn't like 90% of my fave movies of all times upon initial viewing either lol

Another FAVE I forgot to mention, which at this point could be an honorable mention; Pan's Labyrinth.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) That movie had it all.

An Education (2009) Superb acting.

Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) Light touch, unsettling finish, great performances.

House of Flying Daggers (2004) A visual delight.

In Bruges (2008) Intelligent guy flick.

Io sono l'amore / I am Love (2009) One of the most poetic, superb endings of a movie I have ever seen.

El laberinto del fauno / Pan's Labyrinth (2006) Wasn't digging this one too much.

Låt den rätte komma in / Let the Right One In (2008) This movie, and so many others, prove most of the best movies are being made outside the States.

Lost in Translation (2003) That waiting room scene was iconic.

it depends on which themes/concepts you like; many non-american/british films talk about certain themes due to budget limitations...the french industry couldn't afford to make an epic & modern film about Napoleon, for example (something that Hollywood could easily do), because there is no money...not surprisingly, some of my fav european films are usually french-german-italian-spanish co-productions...

Yeah, I'm not that into big Hollywood spectacle films. A movie about a couple having a conversation over dinner in some cool foreign setting can satisfy me just fine. (This was pretty much the entirety of the film Certified Copy. lol )

I remember when Brotherhood of the Wolf came out in 2001, the budget was reported to be around $29 million which was through the roof for a French film at the time. Using your example of Napoleon though, that's a movie for which I'd think a French studio would pull out all the stops. There is worldwide appeal on that subject. The studio would definitely get its money back internationally.

hmm, a movie like that would certainly need some american money, at least for the international distribution/exhibition deals, it would probably be a french-UK-US co-production, with a diplomatic script in order to satisfy both the british and the french (lol) and an international cast (mainly with british/french actors, and probably a famous american director to satisfy the US audience/execs...)

This was tough. I've never really thought about this. I'm sure movies are missing and these are certainly not in any particular order.

Step Brothers

The Hangover

Shrek

The Holiday

Pride and Prejudice

Sweeny Todd

Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl

Road to Perdition

The Harry Potter movies

Devil Wears Prada

Stardust

Star Trek (From 2009...Chris Pine...etc)

I am not a film critic, I'm a movie go-er. I like what I like. It can have plot gaps big enough to drive a truck through, if I like it I like it.

I'm firmly planted in denial

Have you seen Brotherhood of the Wolf? It's a martial arts horror thriller mashup--big budget (for France) period piece epic. Think Sleepy Hollow meets Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
