Dark Shadows- Original series

I remember this show, but basically just hearing about it. I don't think I've seen the series and tried to watch it on Netflix, but my tv set up was messed up, so it didn't work.

ANYWAYS... With the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version coming out soon, I decided I really, REALLY wanted to check out the original series, so I decided to look it up on Amazon.

A dvd set of the entire series is due to be released in June 2012. I don't know if this is just a re-release. I stopped there for 2 reasons. 1) The box set is pretty cool looking. I really like it. 2) The entire collection costs $419.99 US/$.

OUCH!!

I knew it was going to be expensive because the show ran daily for several years, but

OUCH!!

Anyone own it? Whatched the entire series? What do you love about it?

Way too much to pay for it and the tv shows that I watched were boring as hell. I love Johnny Depp, but I don't think this as a comedy will be successful.

For years I have known about the show and knew the title, but never watched an episode until today through Netflix. I'll keep watching it, but definitely wouldn't pay that much for a dvd set. I like the eerie theme song.

"Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

I was much younger when this show originally ran. As kids we couldn't get home quick enough to pile in front of the tv and watch this show. It was a soap opera. It just had a supernatural twist. Yes it was hokie, especially by today's standard. But I and my siblings loved this show. It had time travel, witchcraft, parrallel universes...And the plots could get quite convoluted. We loved it and I would rather watch a DVD selection of the original series than some of today's shows i.e. True Blood or Vampire Diaries.

I got the 90's version on DVD. I liked it even though there was like only 13 episodes.

I was reading the Wiki page on the original series.

It was really good, but confusing as it's cramming years of story into a synopsis.

It did make me really want to see the original series.

You can see the original on Netflix. I started watching it a few months ago, trying to fill in the blanks from what I remembered as a kid. I do remember one episode that scared the pants off me when a bound man barely escaped getting cut in half by a huge swinging pendulum ax but not before it drew blood. I had nightmares over that one. razz lol

I tried that first, but my set up is wonky and the sound was so bad I couldn't hear.

Will be trying again soon.

hmph! Shut it!!!

giggle

We were streaming Netflix through our Boxee and the sound was just coming through the tv instead of the sound system for some reason. On top of that, we could tell the audio from the show was just not clear, so we couldn't hear anything.

I read about that on Wiki. The show was scheduled so fast that the actors would forget their lines and they became known for seeing the filming crew in the background and sound mics etc.

Well lets get the soap actors some cred. Its a bitch to do a show that everyday is a new script. Throw doing it live on air with that. It may look hooky as hell but that was some fly by the seat of the pants production. I'd love to see an actor try and do that shit today.

Exactly!

And I have to admit, I'm so use to the slick production (and less demanding storylines) of today's shows that if I didn't know some of the history of the original Dark Shadows, I might have just dismissed it as shoddy.

Knowing what I know now, I'm looking forward to watching the series.

I would love to see it again.

I watched it when I was home sick from school. It was the one soap opera I was allowed to watch. It wasn't really scary, just mysterious.

It was very campy in a way.

Totally agree! although soaps can be cheesy they.... well they put a lot of work in to them.

My best friend's mom was on DOOL in the late 80's and she told us it was like go to work at 5 AM to 9 PM. And shoot a few episodes a DAY confused that is a lot of freaking work.

So even with the campiness, soap stars work there asses off.
