How Old Is too Old to start a new career I went on an interview today for another position in another field outside of nursing and I'm feeling kinda old at 40 So how old do you think is too old to pursue something that you really wanna do if it makes you happy?

I started on in my late 30s, because I was laid off!
The good news is I have much more free time these days to write my book.

Yeah I was laidoff a few months ago, but thank goodness I have a degree in something else so I finally decided to get serious about it maybe I'll get lucky Good luck on that book So 40 is too damn old?

Definitely not 40 (though I know the feeling, I just turned 40 myself)
Time goes fast, and before you know it you will be done with the training needed to start something new, and you'll still have at least 20 years before you retire.
Unless you want to be an Olympic gymnast

Honey, don't think of yourself as old. If you were a Joshua Tree, you'd still be toddler
Of course, you'd have a really dry bush and scaly bark too though.

You're one of my favorite orgers
I'm ashamed of having admitted that too.

No gymnast but I figure in today's world who the hell can retire anyway So I'm hoping it works out for me and it's nice knowing someone else is in the 40 club

Ex-Moderator | You’re never too old.
Sure, you may have to adjust your lifestyle if starting over means taking a significant pay cut, but I don’t think you’re ever too old for that either. It’s all in your attitude.
You may have other responsibilities that make it more difficult too (kids, partner, mortgage, etc.) but doesn’t have anything to do with age.
Julia Child didn't start teaching cooking till she was 39 and her first cookbook was published about 10 years later. (She was a copywriter and worked government research jobs previously.)
I'm gonna be on that track too, I think. I'm just getting going. |

Aww...this made me smile I really want this job-it's social work. I know it won't make me rich, but I really wanna be successful at it-I hope I get the job. I have another interview tomorrow for a similar position. I guess alot of people are having to reorganize their priorities here lately

Good luck to you! Hope your interview goes well.
And yes, I’m in a similar boat. I’ll be 37 in June, I’m an IT Project Manager and I’m considering going back to school to study nutrition. I’d like to be a nutritionist or registered dietician. And I’ll be pretty close to starting from scratch as I don’t currently have a degree.
It’s a lot to consider (especially how long it will take me to complete training), but I think it will ultimately be better for me. I have a great job, work with great people and I’m paid well, but I’m not passionate about it. I want to do something that genuinely interests me, finally. |

I wish you luck also-your current job sounds great though, but if being a Nutritionist will make you happy I'm all for it I feel like we all have to work, but let's at least do something that makes us happy. I definitely don't think 37 is old hell, I wish I was still 37

I just turned 38, making advances in my current career in Training and Development, and about to transfer my corporate schmorporate skills back into what I really wanted to be doing at first which is entertainment and creative arts.
And I'm totally excited about it! I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

I have a friend who was a nurse until she turned 46 then she got into real estate, within a few years she was making all kinds of money, like she'd been doing it all her life! You can do something different at any time.

me too-wishing you all the best Some of you orgers have great jobs already though

Nope-Once a nurse, always a nurse
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
This has given me so much hope right now People really have no idea how hard of a profession being a nurse really is

A friend of mine was a nurse, too. She went to evening school, got her diploma, then enrolled at the university, studied four or five years, and now she´s a teacher. A lot of really famous people out there started their careers quite late but I don´t really remember any names ( I read an article about this topic last week). I think as long as your new career doesn´t involve extreme physical activity, like competitive boxing, basketball or football, or working as a security guard, a lot of late careers are possible. Stephen King used to be an English teacher before he became a bestselling writer. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Seems like alot of nurses have been changing careers for years now-they are losing nurses. The profession is great, but hard with little to no benefits/retirement, etc. It's hard on one's body. I never knew that about Stephen King-love his work. I think your right about the activity though-these old bones can't take it

it ain't 57-60 which is when i will be embarkin on my path to a career. i am KING BAD!!!

What u gonna do Bady? | |

Luckily you are in a profession that values experience over age so you will always have work no matter how old you get. I've seen nurses in their 60s and they do just fine. Plus they get those assistants to do the bending and changing bedding and bed pans etc.
I do think 50 is too old to be a stripper and 19 is too young to be a cop.
Wait, you wanna quit nursing? Girl is U crazy? [Edited 4/4/12 16:58pm] I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Exactly.
If you think about it, by the time you get to retirement age, that age may very well be 70+. Which means that if you decided to go back to school or whatever type of training or education you needed for this new career, you'd still have about 25 years of work in front of you.
Think about it. Four years to do something that will benefit you for the next 25 and beyond.
