So I gather that you like Katherine Hepburn, huh? By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

Well, of course. But she isn't the only reason I love that movie. David Lean is also one of my favorite directors. And Rossano Brazzi is just... One of the sexiest men ever to grace the big screen, IMO. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

...in all honesty...I don't think that I've ever seen a Katherine Hepburn movie...

I would ask you to recommend a movie...but I'd get hit with a from Imago faster than you could say African Queen... By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

To be fair, some of her films are rather...difficult. (I wouldn't recommend starting with Suddenly, Last Summer or Long Day's Journey Into Night, for example.) Others, while great, are a little more...female oriented, I guess. (I wouldn't go so far as to call them "chick flicks," though.)
You could start with something like A Lion In Winter - which is a terrific film with big stars (Peter O'Toole) and others who went on to become big stars (Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton). Or Guess Who's Coming To Dinner - her last film with Spencer Tracy and also starring Sidney Poitier. (Trivia: Katharine Hepburn never saw this film, because Spencer Tracy died just a couple weeks after shooting wrapped. She couldn't bear to watch it.) On Golden Pond is another great, contemporary performance - and is the last film of Henry Fonda.
If you like westerns, there's Rooster Cogburn, which she did with John Wayne.
As for classic films she did, I have a lot of favorites. The Philadelphia Story (Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart) is just marvelous. Pat and Mike is probably my favorite of the films she did with Spencer Tracy. Bringing Up Baby (Cary Grant) is considered by many to be the quintessential screwball comedy. Holiday (also with Cary Grant) is another film I love - and one of her lesser-known gems. Likewise, Stage Door (Ginger Rogers, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden) and Alice Adams (which is said to be Hepburn's own favorite role).
For my own moment, I have never seen The African Queen all the way through. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I have seen all the mentioned Hepburn movies when I was a kid. Just saying. You have to love Ms. Hepburn. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

3.5/5 Seen it many years ago but revisited it, I still like it, it's officially my new "comfort" movie. Granted I could see something (not sure what) missing in the simple storyline, but I love it's lavishness too much, and the acting was great (I liked Meg), plus my eyes still welled up towards the end, what more could I ask for. And it's a period piece.

My god, I love von Trier! What an ending! The way that movie built to the end, genius. And such sorrow.
For a movie where nothing happens I never felt bored. That is I feel where von Trier really gets the best from his narrative, both spoken and silent, and cast. Charlotte Gainsbourg is a phenomenal actress and it's easy to see why he has chosen her again. My wife reminded me again of the scissor scene from Anti-Christ. Wish she hadn't. Another great movie that one albeit hard going. I do enjoy a movie that makes me think. [Edited 5/3/12 0:27am]

The Deep Blue Sea (2011) - The wife of a British Judge is caught in a self-destructive love affair with a Royal Air Force pilot. Slow-moving melodramas are usually my thing, but I wasn't into this one. 1/2

Just ordered this from Amazon. Cost about two quid! Anyone else seen it? It flits between English, Spanish and French apparently. Thank god I can read!

I see with von Trier I do get some kind of emotional response, right or wrong. I love Dogville, I like plays so it worked for me, but I especially love that ending. Melancholia, made me angry and I know why, yes Charlotte was great and I ended up loving her. AntiChrist, I skimmed through it and after seeing that ending I don't think I can take the long route a little too deep for me.

Keep in mind though, I think Christian Bale was miscast in the latest Batman films otherwise The Dark Knight would be tops. The Avengers at the very least is as good as Spider-Man 2, my formerly favorite superhero movie.

No need to worry. It will be at least a "c" movie in my eyes. Hey, it could surprise me. It could be better. Spidey 2 was okay, I like the Bale Batman movies better though. But then I like Batman better than Spiderman. I like Batman, Green Lantern, and Spiderman as my favorite superheros. I haven't seen the Green Lantern film -just because of the reviews and the scenes I have seen. It looks a bit cheesey. 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

Co-sign. I'll see it again. I disliked Thor, Captain America and both Iron Man movies. But this! I was thinking the same while watching it. The screenwriting is award worthy. Black Widow is Academy Award material. Scarlett deserves a nod. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I saw it in 2-D, I'll go see it now in 3-D. Definitely want to see it again. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I was never a fan of Batman or any of the DC characters, but I do acknowledge that The Dark Knight was a well-made film. I will most likely never see the Green Lantern movie.
If you can tolerate 3D, (I know many people can't) I'd recommend seeing The Avengers in 3D. I saw it in 3D IMAX--loved it.

I've read one review that said Scarlett Johansson's acting in this movie is better than anything she has done before. I don't know if I really agree with that, but she definitely gave Black Widow some depth that was missing in Iron Man 2. And she finally spoke Russian.

3.5/5 Interesting to see dealing with breast cancer from a different cultural perspective, and still have it be light heartedly comical. I even learned a thing or two.
3.5/5 A very complicated situation. Both her father (Sam Neill) and mother (Alice Krige) are white, but Sandra Laing (Sophie Okonedo) is born with dark skin -- a complex problem in the era of South African apartheid that soon drives a wedge into the family in this poignant drama based on a true story. Though her parents fight to have the government classify her as white, Sandra grows up in a divided world, and experiences her parents can't understand make her question her identity.
