We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) - Mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. Disturbing and unpleasant, but Tilda Swinton is fantastic. star star star 1/2

I felt the same uneasiness watching this as I did when I saw the original Funny Games.

Okay, maybe it's because I love Elmo but this documentary was great. And very inspiring to follow your dream no matter what. I gave it starstarstarstarstar It's streaming on Netflix now.

Man, what a horrible movie!

I mean, it was good, but in addition to how depressing it was, I had some questions about the pacing in terms of the musical numbers.

At one point I thought Katherine Heigl would be a good actress, but her movie choices are proving me wrong.

At one point during the movie I thought it might be fun to google how much she can look like Ashley Judd. Ashley Judd has a rounder face.

Breaking the Waves is the one Lars von Trier film everyone has seen that I haven't. It's in my rental queue.

I don't remember if I saw that, but this one is pretty ridiculously awful. Like Passion of the Christ without the ressurection or 2000 years of fame.

nod The man behind Elmo. And shows how he got into puppetry and how it took him to Jim Henson and beyond.

The Thing (2011). It was a lot less tacky than I thought it would be but also a lot less creative. Basically it felt more like a scene-by-scene remake of the original than a prequel.

The original is from 1951.

I give it 2.5 and largely for that lame irrational ending.

He may have been initially vengeful with his new found powers but he would have basically returned to himself. Although he would have been great at sports, he wasn't going to play sports even thought that would make him popular and all that came with it.

Why did he undergo such a radical change the other two guys did not?

I'll think about that every time I watch it probably.

I get terribly confused whenever I hear about people having these massive emotional reactions to Breaking the Waves & Dancer in the Dark. I like Breaking the Waves, and would probably have liked Dancer in the Dark if I didn’t personally find Bjork irritating (that’s a personal bias & nothing else), but I thought both movies were very mannered and the female characters were rather unrealistic, and I never felt any sort of emotional connection or heartstring tug at any point. And I’m not dead inside or a psychopath or anything. I couldn’t watch Graveyard of the Fireflies because I found it too painful. I watched a silly movie about a dog starring Richard Gere (someone I usually take pains to avoid) and I cried like a little girl at the end. But nothing in a von Trier movie has come close to moving me (I’m avoiding the obvious antichrist joke here). There’s some emotional piece that everyone else seems to get that completely eludes me & that really mystifies me. I certainly don’t doubt the reaction of other people. I just don’t get it.

I still can see it, and it's been 8 months since I've watched it. Disturbing. Doesn't make it a horrible movie, just disturbing.

Bleu (Blue) (1993), the first of the Trois Couleurs set. The story had its ebbs and flows, but each frame was a work of art. 4/5

I remember seeing Dancer in the Dark in the cinema and hearing lots of sniffling afterward as the house lights went on. It didn't affect me that way, I just found it extremely downbeat. A friend later gave me the DVD as a gift (because I was a big Björk fan at the time) and I made her exchange it for something else. lol

Miss Bala (2011) - The story of a young woman clinging on to her dream to become a beauty contest queen in a Mexico dominated by organized crime. Supposedly based on a real life event, but I still found the story to be a bit ridiculous. I do like the way it was filmed though. star star star 1/2
