list some good foreign films i'm an avid movie buff and seen thousands of movies of all sorts from all around the world. i see most new UK/US movies and see many highly rated foreign movies, but it's a lot easier to find out or know about UK/US english movies than good foreign flicks so i thought you guys might have some recommendations that i've not seen
the type of thing i'd love to find would be movies that are like hollywood or oscar winning movies, but foreign, so simply as a result of that aren't well known or popular outwith the country of origin. to give an idea of some great foriegn films i'll list a few, and you can check out imdb for the details or wikipedia. most of these are the english titles and i've probably mispelled them all
city of god / city of men elite troop 1 and 2 the vengence trilogy (sympathy for mr vengance, oldboy etc) ichi the killer (and other takashi mike flicks) crouching tiger hidden dragon (and hero etc) kung fu hustle (and other steven chow flicks) infernal affairs trilogy the millenium trilogy (aka the girl...) amores perros the skin i live in (and other almodovar flicks) open your eyes (the original vanilla sky) 9 queens amelie (and jean pierre junets other flicks apart from alien 4) life is beautiful the lives of others the baader meinholf complex downfall (aka der untertang - that hitler movie famous on youtube) das boot pans labrynth ran martyrs 72 degrees aka betty blue subway (and other luc besson flicks) breathless (i like goddard) irreversable and your mother too doberman cinema paradiso solaris nightwatch/daywatch a serbian film la dolce vita seven samuria
so thats a mix to show the variety and styles. films from all over the world, japan, china, russia, europe, brasil. i'm not a fan of bollywood though. i don't think foriegn musicals would appeal either. i like all sorts of stuff, a lot of gritty stuff rather than arty farty stuff. not really into horror but some of the mental jap stuff and mental french stuff is okay
if anyone is interested, i'll remember and post some more examples and suggestions later. some of the stuff above is heavy going long black and white with subtitles like seven samaria, others are fast moving action flicks, some are comedies, many are big budget flicks, and some are just fucking weird. some have been remade like solaris, although the remake is 90 minutes and bears little relation to the 3 hour russian original, and others like nightwatch trilogy could have easily been a hollywood movie

oh yeah, and i'm not interested in kiddie shite. so no fucking swedish versions of harry potter or manga shite and i don't care if yugoslavia does cgi pish thats 10 times better than toy story, i hate all that. i want proper movies with real actors made for adults. i don't care if seventeen thousand chinese children hand drew the backgrounds of akira, i'm not going to watch it. ever

A Serbian Film is a rotten, stinking piece of shit.
I hate subtitles, they're distracting. I want to watch the movie.
That being said, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale was pretty good.
Battle Royale is finally getting a US release.

thanks, i've seen a load of them, but not others. battle royale is great. i've had christiane F for ages but never watched it. bowie did the soundtrack to that. trollhunter was an interesting movie. miles better than blair witch to which is was compared. all the el mariachi trilogy is good
do you mean the original zatoichi or the remake btw?

when people talk about a movie being the most horrible thing ever, depending on the subject matter i might check it out. human centipede was nothing compared to what people said about it. in fact it was reasonably well shot and done compared to explotation movies of the past. i think the idea of what was happening was worse that what happened. the sequel wasn't as good, but parts were interesting. a serbian film on the other hand was as shocking as people said, and it's the kind of movie you would actually warn people against watching. it's also filmed and shot decently, and a lot of the shock value is the idea of what is happening, rather than straight graphic visuals. you have other movies with violence and rape and things, your japanese gore flicks like machine girl and french new wave horror like martyrs but this pushes the envelope off the table and you aren't getting it back
rare exports sounds interesting. presumably it's not a kid movie due to the rating. i've never heard of that before, or dogtooth which also sounds interesting. i'm not sure if madame sata is my cup of tea though. i presume it's the most recent version in the poster

is that what you mean?
earth sounds interesting, fire sounds maybe a bit dated as i'm not sure if the taboo is that strong these days, not sure about water

I'm surprised to hear you say that. I know it's a common feeling for lots of people, but with your indie sensibilities, I thought you'd be a big foreign film advocate.

thanks for the suggestions everyone, keep them coming
actually from that list i mentioned a few and have seen most of them. there's only 2 that i don't think i already have. i just watched bad education last week and watched atame (tie me up tie me down) this week. i've had the dvd of like water for chocolate for umpteen years and never watched it yet. i have piles of movies i've never watched

i've seen a few of those like lust caution, black book, sex and lucia, and i've never got round to seeing brotherhood of the wolf, which i just noticed monica belluci is naked in, so i'll get round to that sooner, and i've got let the right one in to watch. it's just that i'm not a horror fan so really have to be in the right mood to watch horror/fantasy stuff as it is, and then with subtitles you have to be in the right mood and make sure you aren't falling asleep or distracted otherwise you can't follow the dialogue
that's the thing with some of the jap horror flicks though, you have no bloody idea wtf is going on. just weird shit appearing and dissapearing all over the place and no explanation. then they remake it in american with lindsey lohan or someone and it makes even less sense. like the ring and the eye and the mirror or whatever. rec was okay though, although not japanese. i like the yakuza and vengence type movies. drift racer was good too

I'm an advocate for all good film, so I certainly encourage people to see as many of them as they can, foriegn or otherwise.
Unfortunately, subtiteles really distract me. All I can figure is that because I like to read so much, and because I'm a visual person by nature, I focus too much on the subtitles. My skill level with reading the subtitles and watching the movie at the same time is absolutely ZERO. I find myself focusing on the bottom of the screen, waiting for the next line of dialogue to pop up.

All that being said, I still try to watch the foriegn films that are really getting a lot of buzz, or are strongly recommended by friends. I've probably seen 40-45% of the films listed in this thread. I just don't really hurry out to see them as fast as I probably should.

I've seen a few, some listed here, not that many though. The one the comes to mind always is really old 30 yrs, but I don't see it listed Raise the Red Lantern, I still like watching it even now.

Not sure if you meant 'Elite Squad' when you referenced 'Elite Troop.' I bolded the movies listed that I own. 'Ichi the Killer,' is a favorite as sick as that sounds. I've also seen the Millenium Trilogy but yet sure I want to own it.
Bolded 'Hero' and 'Elite Troop (squad).'

I've seen the bolded and would recommend them also. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

yeah elite squad. the original title translated means elite troop so i got the name mixed up. there's a sequel that follows the story a few years on which is just as good. these are action flicks as good if not better than anything from hollywood

I own the first 'Elite Squad.' I'd like the sequel. Have you seen the Brazilian film, 'Bus 54?' Very good also. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I agree, these are great movies. Deepa Metha is a very talented director.
I would like to add Y Tu Mama Tambien to the list of good foreign films.
