I gave up caffeine cold turkey a little over a month ago, when it became clear that it was messing up my hormone replacement regimen. I've been through some tough times since - but am finally coming out of it (I hope). Do yourself a favor - get off caffeine, dump the sugar, and get some sleep. It'll be hard making the change, and you'll probably feel worse for awhile. But it'll be worth it.

Well, I'm definintely gonna start as soon as possible. Aiming to try to do it cold turkey too. sad

Why? Why not just cut back to a reasonable daily amount? shrug

The thing is, for women (especially), nobody knows what that is. Even at low doses, caffeine messes with estrogen. It might not be such a big deal when you're young, but years of storing excess estrogen in your fat cells can put a woman in a hell of a mess. Hormonal birth control makes it even worse. Suddenly, you find yourself in late middle age with estrogen dominance - the symptoms of which can short-circuit your entire life.

Nobody does - until they're behind the coffee-flavored 8 ball. (Obviously, caffeine isn't the cause of/only contributor to estrogen dominance, but it doesn't help.)

Do you have any reliable links? (My laptop has a fucking virus, and one of the minor things I can't do right now is web searches)

If you are thinking about detoxing, I recommend a documentary called "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead". You can rent it from Netflixx or watch it on Hulu. It's about 2 obese men who sufferred from all kinds of obesity-related illnesses and they healed themselves and transformed their bodies thru a juicing detox.

i watched that too! excellent show. try the one called 'food matters' next.

Here's something from the NIH. I highlighted the money parts.

Early follicular phase hormone levels in relation to patterns of alcohol, tobacco, and coffee use.

Lucero J, Harlow BL, Barbieri RL, Sluss P, Cramer DW.

Source

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, San Francisco, California, USA.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To examine the effects of alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco use on early follicular phase FSH, LH, E2, and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG).

DESIGN:

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING:

Academic medical center.

PATIENT(S):

Four hundred ninety-eight women selected from the general population, ages 36-45, who were not currently pregnant, breast feeding, or using exogenous hormones.

INTERVENTION(S):

A general questionnaire assessing demography, anthropometry, and smoking habits and a standardized dietary questionnaire assessing food and beverage frequencies, including sources of alcohol and caffeine.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S):

FSH, LH, E2 (that's estradiol - the dominant form of estrogen), and SHBG levels measured during the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle.

RESULT(S):

Significant associations observed in a univariate analysis included age > or =40 and current smoking associated with higher FSH; higher body mass index (BMI) associated with lower SHBG levels; and daily alcohol use, cholesterol consumption greater than the median, and coffee use >1 cup/d associated with higher E2 levels. In a multivariate model, total caffeine use was significantly associated with E2 levels after adjustment for age, BMI, total calories, current smoking, alcohol, cholesterol consumption, and day of sampling. Early follicular phase E2 increased from 28.2 pg/mL for women consuming < or =100 mg of caffeine to 45.2 pg/mL for women consuming > or =500 mg of caffeine per day, about a 70% increase.

CONCLUSION(S):

Coffee consumption and total caffeine use may increase early follicular phase E2 levels independent of related habits of alcohol or tobacco use.

So I take it, drinking large amounts of green tea, as I read would be good for you, isn't a good idea?

I suspected the article was sponsored by tea growers.

Hard to say...since there are other things in green tea that are actually good for you.

It's easy to decaffeinate tea, though. You just steep the tea for a minute, then throw out that water and start over with the same leaves/bag and fresh, hot water. Most of the caffeine in tea is released in the first minute of steeping.

He's telling me I'm full of shit.

Of course, it's "may." The problem is, you don't know whether you're a "may" or a "does" until it's too late. I'm pretty sure I'd've been better off had I decaffed a long time ago.

rolleyes No, if I was telling you you were full of shit I would have quoted you and said, "you're full of shit."

When did you become so defensive and sensitive about what I say? It kind of sucks.

You may have been better off, but there are many studies that have shown small amounts of caffiene can be helpful to the human body in numerous ways. Notice I said can be, not is.

I'm of the opinion that caffiene, like about 1000 other things, has different longterm affects on individuals based on any number of factors; genes, physical health and activity, diet, geographic locations, etc. I don't believe its fair to tell someone they should stop drinking caffiene because of something that happened to you, personally.
