Beautiful work, Kelly.

Quick inquiry; don't you have to get permission to reproduce the work of C'Baby B'Coc or whatever his name is?

(sorry - no disrespect to anybody)

No.
This is a free festival.
This is not a contest.
It's just a fun day in the sun.
The artists get paid nothing.
Credit is given to the original artist. (well I do anyway)

That one and the Steve McCury photograph is the only time I did a reproduction. I usually do all original work.

If I was selling reproductions (prints) of his work, that might be a different story.

I actually sent this to http://www.bayocstudio.com/ and got a response back the same day last year from Cbabi Bayoc Himself!

He said I did a great job and wanted to see more pictures of the event. He also said he wished they did something like that where he lives.

NPGMC wrote me and said I should send him the photos althouh I already did. Who ever answers e-mails over there thought they were pretty cool too.

Cbabi Bayoc said he was very flattered that I would choose to do a reproduction of his work. After looking at his site, his street murals are awesome! It was his site that inspired me to do it more than anything!

I thought it was funny that at last years celebration they did some side walk chalk art in the parking lot and had photos on the site.

Both NPGMC and Cbabi Bayoc seemed cool with it, if that's what you wanted to know.

Update:

Man was it hot today!
And a horrible hot wind from the west. The ocean is only a few blocks to the east. Why could it have come from the east?

Oh, well...

and just as I taped plastic over the painting, it began to rain!

I hope it survives the night and doesn't rain much more.

It's begining to look pretty good, and I hope to finish by tomorrow.

What is it that's so sexy about girls covered in chalk?
I had to keep telling my self all day...

I'm married I'm married I'm married I'm married I'm married

I'll update you with pictures so you know what I'm talking about come monday!

Update:

It rained pretty bad.

THAT SUCKED...

Everything was ruined.

So, I had two choices.

1.) Give up, pull out camera and shoot the other artists whose work survived the night or not as damaged as mine.

2.) Start over, which the previous day took all day (11 hours) to get half way done. So I was pretty screwed.

Then I had an epiphony or a historectomy or maybe I got too much sun. I dunno.

My work area was 12 X 12 feet so I reduced my work area to the center within a circle at about 1/4 the size.

Maybe, just maybe I would get done.

Now you see, It takes all of the first day on your hands and knees to plot out the drawing and begin filling in the colors needed for the objects your illustrating. The second day I use to go back and work in the details and try to make it more life like.

Now the first day takes a lot out of you sitting out in the hot south florida sun on your hands and knees for 8-10 hours. The second day, I like to just chill and work at my own pace.

I'm usually very sore and sun-burned by the second day and did not feel like starting over.

I began thinking about the wall I have in my studio that displays my Street Painting pictures for every year, and I would just hate to see a year skipped.

So... aching back, butt, arms, legs, hands and all, I got back on my hands and knees and started something new.

After getting some towles and soping up the puddles of water and waiting for the sun to come out and dry it all up, I began at about 10 am. I got there at 7 am.

It's not what I set out to do, but I felt compelled to do what I wanted to do the previous year before I thought to do the Rainbow Children album cover.

I took lots of pictures. But I have to reduce the dpi size for your browser and upload them sometime tomorrow.

My ass hurts to much today to go to the studio tonight.

I thank everyone for all the kind words above. You are the main reason I decided not to quit yesterday after the rain. Because I wanted to live up to what I said I would do.

That's great that Bayoc and the NPGMC both supported you! Personally, I think art should never be treated as intellectual propery - it's of the universe (or God) and not 'owned' by anyone. If society ever gets past this dark era of human expression-as-commerce, some day compliments WILL be treated as 'payment'.

Sorry that it rained you out, though. Congratulations on making the paper!
