Trailer: John Carter of Mars
December 1, 2011
Fans awaiting Disney’s John Carter have gotten some nice little goodies before the holidays. Earlier this week, a new poster for the film premiered and on Wednesday, star Taylor Kitsch made an appearance on Good Morning America to tease the first official trailer for the film.
The action-epic, based on the Barsoom series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, follows a former Confederate captain (Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars, and must resolve a conflict between warring nations.
The film is the first live-action project for director Andrew Stanton, who helmed Pixar’s Wall-E and Finding Nemo.
Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch told us that taking on such an epic role was a challenge for him. “It’s by far the most challenging gig I’ve ever had in my life,” said Kitsch. “It’s the most rewarding as well.”
The film, which also stars Willem Dafoe and Lynn Collins is set for a March 9, 2012, release.

I really don't know what to think about this one. It really looks like an "Avartar" rip-off, but I know it's based off of science fiction books so....... الحيوان النادلة ((((|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|̲̅̅=̲̅̅|̲̅̅●̲̅̅|)))) ...AND THAT'S THE WAY THE "TITTY" MILKS IT!

According 2 some............humans will take their next major step in evolution on that date. Not some silly invasion.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Of course, nothing so silly as that.
You do understand that evolution is an extremely gradual process and that at no time has a species ever taken a "major step" in evolution in one single day?

I think both James Cameron and George Lucas (Attack of the Clones ending basically takes place on a Mars styled Carter environment) were referencing these books and old scifi art in many ways. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

um, yeah...understand that 'princess of mars' was written in 1912...go and read some old sci-fi and comic books and you'll realize that james cameron and george lucas might, someday, have an original idea.

Both of those guys are basing thier work off of material that is "off limits" 2 the general public. If pay close attention, u can see common threads all over the place.

I haven't read the Barsoom series by Burroughs. I remember coming across copies of Marvel's short-lived series John Carter, Warlord of Mars and DC's Weird Worlds at comic book shops.

I put the "I think" in the statement to be friendly to those unfamiliar with the genre's history. I've been thinking that softening might be good approach to responses on pop culture boards. Funny how it backfired into the vibe of peedub's response. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

i didn't intend to put a negative spin on it, but come on. to my mind, suggesting that this is a rip-off of avatar is comparable to accusing george clinton of biting dr. dre's style. there are pioneers in any genre, but james cameron isn't one. [Edited 12/1/11 12:05pm]

I never said it was a rip off of Avatar! I'm am not true fan of James Cameron ( I think he borrows things I recognize with all his movies including Titanic and Terminator). I'm much more of an A L I E N (1979) kind of guy. I was trying to gently tell the truth to those thinking John Carter rips off Avatar and Attack of the Clones. When I heard that Speelyberger was doing a War of the Worlds movie, I was so excited, WotW was and still is one of my all time fave Books, so imagine my huge dissapointment at teh drivel he poured out onto teh Cinema screen........ it wasn't even worthy of a 2nd rate comic strip, yes the effects where good, but teh story line was lame and the actors even moreso (and yes I refer to Mr Cruise too).
This Movie will probably be the same, looking at the trailer, nothing new, no new concepts, nothing to say "wow" at. Just teh same old same old, Semi Human Aliens "a la" 1960's Star Trek episodes and cute, Fluffy yet Deadly Monsters..........
The point I am trying to make is, its all "old news" regurgitated storylines we have all seen, the only difference is the technology used to process it all.
Life is short, don't be a dick.

The movie is based on a novel first published in 1917. If anything, all contemporary sci-fi films have stolen ideas and storylines conceived by Burroughs.

Because no-one ever wrote a Sci Fi novel prior to 1917? Life is short, don't be a dick.

Jules Verne wrote Sci-fi novels, to name one author. But who hasn't borrowed from him as well? He, Burroughs and Wells were ahead of their times.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Since you honestly believe The Princess of Mars is deriative, from whom did Burroughs rip-off the plot?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well, considering I never read the Book, I would not know. But all Authors / Movie makers etc have ripped off someone else. Nature of teh Businness.
My point was, that the chances are, this will be a typical Hollywood movie that stinks teh same as all other Movies based on good Stories by Authors with something to write, and will probably be so far different from the Book that its barely recognisable. The entire integrity of the movie will be based on CGI and Effects and lack in a decent, or even thorough or accurately based storyline. Life is short, don't be a dick.

Is that Led Zeppelin in the soundtrack? "...literal people are scary, man literal people scare me out there trying to rid the world of its poetry while getting it wrong fundamentally down at the church of "look, it says right here, see!" - ani difranco
