What is your definition of being single? My think If you are not married, you are single.
I don't understand some people's idea that because they are dating someone, that they are not single.
Thoughts?

Set the scene. Will there be drinking involved? Because if so, those definitions have a few grey areas.

when i was married i considered my self single ~ even tho i did not date or c anyone!!!
i was single because we were living separate lives, there was no communication, no intimacy, no sex, no love.... all we did was fight
i was also very lonely and that made it worse, because i was desperate to have a relationship with someone else other than my X
so u can b single if married!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you live together with someone, married or not, you're not single! I guess it depends on how serious the relationship is.

Legally separated and paying child support for 8+ years = single enough.
So yeah, I met a married man, who was spearated from his wife and not living with her for years.
Now my mom is still married to my father ... they have been legally sperated for over 38 years and yes, she is single.... and still married.
I was a stickler for the "thou shall not fuck a married man" no matter what attitude... but every couple I know that is legally separated dates and gets their fuck on with new lovers, so.... Imma date a LEGALLY separated man if that status is over a year old. Yup.... I lowered my standard and I don't give a fuck what anybody thinks.
I don't know why folks just do not divorce straight off? Why stay tied to someone you're not going to live/be with?

"Not so much"....that's a bit vague isn't it?
Surely if you have a girlfriend / boyfriend or maybe even a fiance / fiancee there's absoluletly no way you should be dating or sleeping with someone else?
I know plenty of people who don't have the rings and certificate of marriage and their relationships are a whole lot more serious and grounded than some of my married friends. www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

I would not consider those as being single. You can be totally commited to one person and be in an open relationship at the same time.

Plus these legal separations cost money that could go to getting a divorce. My cousin's husband has been living with his girlfriend for six years or so. I think they stay married because of her need of his health insurance and the joint property. She has spent time with this woman and my cousin makes no claims to her husband. So she is single, IMO.
I guess the question I would have if someone told me that they were single is "Is there someone in your life who strongly disagrees with you?". I don't want to deal with anyone's drama from a different relationship.

Excellent question... I asked my guy something similar. When we met he told me he was "single" but then confessed to being separated from his wife, so my question to him was "I don't want any woman to come knocking on my door or calling me to tell me to leave her man alone... is that gonna happen?" he answered NO. I said OK... it better not.
Right then he gave me the name and info of his wife and said I could talk to her if I ever had any doubt. I never called her.

That is it. No one wants that telephone call. Or worse, when they show up at your workplace! Dear Lord!!! Marriage is crazy. ( I wonder how many gays in Massachusetts have figured that out. ) It is so easy to get into and such a mess to get out of. I think that he did right by you by saying that you could ask her yourself. Its tricky territory. I never want to feel like I am helping to tear up some one's family.

A Legal Separation provides certain financial benefits sometimes. For example, you can still share insurance and file taxes together (if that suits you). There's also the reason for one or both perhaps just taking a "time out" to see what happens and if they can somehow find their way back together again.
But if none of that applies and there are no other special circumstances, then yeah just get the damned divorce and walk away.
