3. If you want to get technical, your Euro Football was called "soccer" long before it was called "football". So don't get it twisted.
did he just call it "euro football"
jesus.
i think we could quite easily end this "debate" with that inane comment

That's right, I said it! THIS is 21st Century social correctness talking to you.
Your "football" and mine "football" is not the same game, hence why I have to say "American Football" & "Euro Football".

Hell, put'em in a high school game or a Div III game.
This is clearly a cultural dispute between Americans, many of whom (wrongly) do not consider sports invented or played outside of America to be of any consequence, and non-Americans, who often fail to truly appreciate the size, speed, and overall athletic ability of those who play "big-time" sports.
How about this: put Adrian Peterson, Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis, Manti T'eo, Ndamukong Suh, or Jake Long on a rugby field and see what happens. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

jony.
all . . . DUE . . . respect.
if America's best althetes were competing for roster spots most of those guys wouldn't see the field.
this isn't a jingoist bias. i'm sure that those guys are very good at what they do.
but, you tell me if a rugby team would stand a chance against athletes like these.

Give the 11 best rugby players in the world a month to prepare for an NFL scrimmage and I'd bet they wouldn't fare as well as the starting defensive unit of the Alabama Crimson Tide, given the same amount of time to prepare for a professional rugby game. Take the best futbol players in the world and put them at specialty positions on NFL rosters -- or, say, an NBA roster -- and I bet they wouldn't fare as well as NFL specialty players and/or NBA players would in a futbol game.
As for "futbol," remember that in international competition the USA isn't even playing its best athletes and it's STILL respectable.

Actually, take a look at American football players years after retirement, and you'll see that their life spans are shorter, and a lot of that is due to the severity of head, back, joint injuries suffered during their playing careers.
American football players don't have to take a back seat to anyone when it comes to toughness. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I do consider other sports outside the U.S. Even if I did not like another sport from another country I would not start a thread calling them "cissified" (Sissy I assume). I understand Europeans love Football and Rugby, good for them, I would never put them down for it. If you don't like American football fine, no need to tell us that you don't like it. We don't care if you like it or not (we really don't). Football (Soccer) is played through out the U.S and there even is a pro-league and yet the MLS is looked down on (damed if you do......) And it's not only Americans who wrongly do not consider sports from other countries.

Whilst we do call football "soccer" sometimes (we invented that name too), the word "football" has been used for 100's of years LOL. That's it's original name, not soccer!

Nor does it apply to me, I hope. I don't watch it on a regular basis, but futbol is a really great game that inspires passion among its fans. Many kids are now playing futbol in the States and it will continue to grow, but it will take a long time for it to become a major US sport. I just think non-Americans not familiar with US football who speak so passionately about its flaws need to check themselves. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I agree with you on the fact that american footballers are built differently to rugby players. American footballers go the "steroid" route LOL, whilst rugby players are more "stocky" for lack of a better word. Rugby stars still look tougher to me though in general LOL.
One thing that rugby and football has over american football is you need alot of stamina. American football, like baseball and our cricket (which I hate), you don't need nearly as much as it's so stop-start. Basketball you need to have a hell of alot of stamina too. Thats what makes those games rock hard to play for me personally.
I wish the UK had some decent baseball and american football leagues personally. Though the rules to american football are too complicated for me LOL. Thats part of the universal appeal of football (and why it's lasted 100's of years), is the simplicity of it.
Sure like all sports football is boring as hell sometimes, but you just never quite know what will happen in football, and thats what I love about it best. Though I too do hate the play acting footballers do now. Never use to be like that when it was more a "working class" game before the 1990's LOL.
Basketball is by far the biggest american sport in the UK, particually in the playgrounds. Like football, you barely need any equipment so anyone can play.
I know baseball in huge in Japan (and someone mentioned south american countries too), but Africa, Oceania nor Europe really play the sport at all, so I guess thats why it's not in the olympics yet, not that it should matter anyway. Nobody I know really watches the olympic football really anyway....

football is played in EVERY single country in the world
it is the beautiful game
'amaerican" football has NEVER caught on hence why it is only played in the USA

As I said, I think part of the problem (Ok a major problem) is all the eqipment you need to properly play American football. Anyone can play football, use jumpers for goal posts LOL, kids all over the world still do that and always will. That and as I said, the rules of American football are too complex for kids on playgrounds to bother with.
Indeed football is the beautiful game. I love the fact that Africa have taken it to their hearts aswell. I know football is growing in America, but I still think kids would rather play basketballl or baseball in school playgrounds then football, and thats why it will never properly grow. Why that is I don't know LOL. Maybe that is changing too. But in schools I grew up in, it was always football that was by far the most popular sport to play at lunchtime. It wasn't even a think worth thinking about, it just was....
Poverty striken kids in all countries can play football, something few other sports can do say about themselves. And thats why it's by far the most popular sport worldwide any why the world cup dwarfs every sporting event on earth. [Edited 10/25/11 21:02pm]

You're absolutely right that futbol and rugby players have great stamina, which most football players, who play 1-3 of every 4 downs and have breaks on change of possession, have. Only NBA players can rival their stamina.
Football players with futbol experience also seem to have better footwork and body control. It requires athleticism to play futbol at a high level; I just think it's hard to compare because while the rest of the world fields many if most of its very best athletes for futbol (professional, international or otherwise), the USA doesn't. Same for rugby.
Having traveled to Europe, I really did love the atmosphere and excitement futbol has around it. I also think the vuvuzela is the worst thing to happen to it!
As for today's football, It IS less violent for many reasons, like:
1. Today's athletes are so freakishly strong and fast that playing the game as it used to be played would cause a lot of injuries.
2. There's too much money invested in all players to risk injuries playing the game like it used to be played.

They're not bigger as in stronger/quicker/more athletic, (of course depending on the position they play in, but) they're mostly fatter.

Why are so many European Soccer/football fans racist louts?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Are you serious in trying to connect a specific sport with racist attitudes of some minorities?
Rethink this: In most European countries (not any longer in England, at least not in the top two leagues), football is still a working class sport, as poorer people could afford to go to the local stadium and be proud of their working class heritage and their national heritage and it offered a way to let loose of some of the anger that builds up in their mostly difficult daily lives. It offered some kind of identity and gave an opportunity to shout, sing, be happy and sad together and kill some time on the week-ends.
In England, the top two leagues got rid of the dangerous and sometimes racist hooligans by raising ticket prices, equipping all stadiums with cameras, raising security and makeing every stadium all-seaters.
It's certainly not about the sport, as football actually brings together all kinds of cultures and has loads of anti-racism campaigns, but rather about the people who are there. Unfortunately (and quite understandibly), some poorly educated, angry rednecks tend to be racist, but those kind of people do not only exist in Europe, but also in many American states (in some there are even a lot of them).

Bit of a sweeping generalisation! There are still some real arseholes on the terraces but its way better than it use to be 20 or 30 years ago. No, I think the problem with football fans these days is:-
1. Every one of them thinks he's an expert on the game
2. They all think they are still great at playing the game (despite the fact they spend their Saturdays and Sundays in front of matches shovelling beer and crips down their throats)....just go watch your local Sunday league team...its god-awful!!
Its the reason I stopped playing myself. I knew full well the limitations of my game; the only reason I was of use on the pitch was because I was fit and big. I was eager to learn though, but no one was willing to teach it properly, everyone thought they knew the game inside out so finding a genuinely useful captain, coach, manager, whatever, was nigh on impossible. Thats when I took myself off to my local American Football team, where they players had respect for each other, realised they didnt know everything and were willing to learn from people who actually knew what they were talking about. www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!

You don't watch much football, do you? The "fat" guys (who are as strong as bulls and could probably beat most people in a footrace) are offensive linemen and interior defensive linemen. That's 7 of the 22 guys out on the field and not all of them are "fat."
Find your best athletes on any given rugby squad. I'll take my best athletes on any NFL squad and We'll beat your guys in either sport. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

"My daddy is stronger than your daddy!!!"
Just because many of your American Football players have to take half naked pictures of themselves as part of the whole package of the show and almost all Rugby players are simply sportsmen who would never undress for a magazine (like all football players used to be, up until George Best), doesn't mean they have less muscle.
Those Rugby fellas are extremely big, strong lads. The only difference is, they also have to run all the fucking time, contrary to American Football players.

Might be true, but nobody said they would.
Would you last more than one minute on a proper Rugby/Football field? Probably not either.

- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I don't believe you were both a professional football player and a professional rugby player, so I doubt you'd last on either for longer than a minute.
What do you even mean by "last"? I could run around on an American Football field without anyone being able to break my neck, even if I don't play American Football myself.
You can be a brilliant sportsman who ran miles and miles in his life and run around like a hen on a football pitch, but I doubt you could do something productive etc.
So, what's your point? | |

Okay, Dave. Keep telling yourself your rugby players would stand a chance.
It's not just about size and strength, it's about speed, agility, quickness. That's apparently what you're not getting.
The guys I'm talking about are not only bigger and stronger, they're faster and quicker. You simply don't know what you're talking about, so you can delude yourself if you like. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
