One question...have you ever played American Football?

I've played a good few years of rugby, and I played American Football for the Kent (now Maidstone) Pumas and the GB Under 19 squad....I can honestly say that American Football was tougher. It was more high impact, I had more injuries in two seasons of it than I did in seven years of rugby.

There's a reason the NFL season is only 16 games long while a rugby season is alot longer...the gridiron is harder on the body.

So unless you've played both...you can't really say just from sitting on your sofa shovelling crisps and pies! biggrin

what a FUCKING STUPID arguement twice now

"i get more injuries" so what??

its a fucking shit sport and an utter bastardisation of rugby

OF COURSE your going to go in harder with loads of padding...pathetic

when i play football i ALWAYS take out the biggest lad on the pitch..let him know your there.

without helmets,shoulder pads etc

...but you still haven't said whether you've played rugby and American Football...if you haven't actually experienced both how can you possibly comment?

And lets not get started on football these days....its become a non contact sport, all those over paid prima-donnas rolling around on the pitch for half an hour just for a broken toe nail. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a quarterback once who ruptured his spleen before half time and he still came out to play the second half. Ronaldo strains his groin and has six weeks off. And then there's all the hand bags and twenty paces in football, the faking injuries to con the ref...please!!

Compare gridiron to rugby, fair enough...both tough sports. But football? Have you watched a match in the last ten years? Seeing the pics on here of all the old boys like Stuart Pearce makes me wish for a time when football wasn't played by a load of cotton-wool wrapped "cissies" to use your delightful phrasing!

...reminds me of a documentary I watched the other day about the Video Nasties hoo-hah in the eighties. Good old Mary Whitehouse was banging on about The Evil Dead being the worst film of all time andhow its going to corrupt the Britain. She's was interviewed and the conversation went something like this:-

"So Mary, have you sat and watched The Evil Dead?"

"No, no I haven't...but we need to ban it"

Riiiiiggggght!! biggrin

I don't really see what's up your ass about it all. Who fucking cares?

You ever notice Americans don't criticize rugby players? That's because they are not insecure about the fact that rugby players are badass. It doesn't make American football sissy.

Fans sit and watch them on TV and act superior when in fact they could not do either sport...or football/soccer, baseball, cricket, badminton, golf...

yeahthat Exactly, why the need to always attack peaople who like American Football, get over yourself and accept the fact that people in other parts of the world enjoy different things. Stop seeing it only from your view, what next attack Japanese people because they like Sumo better than Rugby.

Actually, you know what Jony. I was reading an article about concussion and brain damage, and it said that playing with all that gear on like helmets lulls players into a false sense of security. They play harder and damage their brains more frequently and to a greater extent. Which is contrary to what one might be led to believe hmmm

True. the seat belt effect. Providing a sense of security leads people to elevate the risks they are willing to take.

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Yeah.

It was a horrible article. I'm not letting my kids play contact sports disbelief

AFL here is pretty rough too. Kids as young as 12 being knocked out cold on the ground and not remembering how it happened. The coach putting them back in the game if they could count how many fingers he holds up. Brain injury is a grave matter, the player might seem fine now but later in life will likely experience problems with memory loss and Parkinson's etc

The answer to the World Series question is easy. When the World Series began in the states back in the early 1900s, there were no other professional baseball leagues played anywhere else. So whichever team won really was the best in the world.

Now even though there are major leagues in Asia and Latin America, the best players there still want to play in North America because it's widely known that's where all the really good players come to play. Even though the MLB teams are all North American based, they are made up of international players. It's not just a bunch of Americans playing against each other.

Let's not forget that in the early part of the 20th Century American Football was played in Leather. People were getting killed in those games back then.

But the biggest insult to sport is calling football "soccer"

1. American Football players are a lot bigger in size than rugby players. In other words, American Football players are more likely to kill themselves (without protective gear) a lot easier than rugby players even could among themselves (without OR with protective gear). Therefore, we need protecive gear in American Football to prevent potential murder on the field. cool

2. Baseball is for men. Softball is for women. Please stop getting them confused like a complete idiot. rolleyes

3. If you want to get technical, your Euro Football was called "soccer" long before it was called "football". So don't get it twisted. lol
