While were at it, for those of a political bent I strongly recommend Globalisation And It's Discontents by Joseph Stiglitz

I've been meaning to read this. I read some of the articles that he wrote that I assume made it into this book. I remember one especialy on transparency. Good stuff. He's a former World Bank higher up.

I just finished "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. It's about an ex-con named Shadow caught in an impending war between the old gods that people brought with them to America (i.e. Zeus, Ananzi, Anubis, Loki, etc.) and the new gods that were created in America (media, the internet,...). Very good book.

Aside from my organizational dynamics, marketing, applied writing II books, I'm also re-reading Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller, and Lolita, Nabokov. Just recently read that one, but it just amazed me, so I'm re-reading it.

For a lit class, yo.

I'm gonna finish Where I'm Calling From by Raymond Carver sooner or later (best short story author ever, imho) and start Absalom Absalom when I find some time.

Dead Souls by Nokolai Gogol.

Oh, that's a good one. I really enjoyed that. Think it's
been 3 years since I last read it but it's very funny and
provocative. The dialogues are absolutely phenomenal.

The only downside to it is that it isn't really finished
since Gogol died before he managed to write the ending.

I believe he did write an ending, but burned it and then
decided to make a new one, which unfortunatelly he did
not manage before his death.

My Dutch version of it has a pretty well researched
appendix, and if I recall correct it goes into some detail
as to how the book originally ended [in the draft that
Gogol himself burned]. But I'd have to look that up to
make sure since it's been a while since I last read it.

If you like that one you should also try and get a hold of
a copy of Nabokov's "The Enchanter".

"The Enchanter" is kind of a precursor to "Lolita". It was
written years before "Lolita" and published long after,
since it was, I believe, missing for a long time, or V.N.
had tried to burn it but one copy escaped the flames.
Something to that effect anyway. His son rediscovered the
text amongst his fathers papers and it was then published.

It's a bit too short to consider it a novel, and yet it's
to long to be a short story -as many of Nabokov's tales
are.

Believe me, it's well worth the read, particularly if you
enjoyed "Lo".

Well, roughly translated, my original post says:

Gimmick by Joost Zwagerman. Because, well, every now and
then you just have to read one of those easy, Dutch,
proletariat-books about guys having sex with hookers, and
about fucking cunts pasted with peanutbutter. Only 5 more
pages to go. After that, I think I’ll read something decent

Typically, I'm reading a huge, 1000 page biography of Marcel Proust.

That's all I have time to read right now, what with proofreading my manuscript of my tell-all book on the Org..

Nothing really spectacular, just something about a free
books being sent to people by publishers. I was so shocked
to see it because it was all in Dutch and I didn't know
how the hell 9's could read my post. But it turns out he
didn't so...

I'm a huge fan of 'De Grote Bosatlas'. I have the most recent issue.

It's an atlas made for schools with lots of statistical information represented in maps. It tells me everything about trade, climates, languages, soil types, cultural backgrounds, history, education, incomes, pollution, population density, planology, tectonic shifts, economic activity, natural resources, ecosystems, etc.

Whenever I can't sleep, I teek a peek in it and my eyes will fall down right away!

Mags are kewl too.

Just bought the UNCUT (no pun intended) cuz it has a huge article on Bowie and a free cd with Bowie covers (one by Blondie)

And The Rolling Stone cuz I am so addicted to NEWS (HA!) on The Beatles. There was an article about the arrest of three Dutchmen (ahem) who had in their possession a huge collection of Beatle tapes stolen from Apple back in the 70's.

Normally I only buy Premiere (US version) and Interview cuz of their broad spectrum of looking at media.
Music mags are boring. Most times. Esp OOR (Dutch mag that advertises itself as TOONAANGEVEND MUZIEKBLAD which is a load of puppycrap)

Uhm, it might cool the horses a bit if I tell you that I recently read 'Mr Nice', the autobiography of Howard Marks, a big scale ex-Marijuana smuggler. No literature. Pure fun to read. Drugs, money, girls, police. The essence of life in other words.

But this (yet tenderly young) years highlight was (and I now cite the official and indeed very long title):

'Scatalogic Rites of All Nations, A Dissertation upon the Employment of Exrementitious Remedial Agents in Religion, Therapeutiecs, Divination, Witchcraft, Love-Philters, etc., in all Parts of the Globe. Based upon Original Notes and Personal Observations, and upon Compilation from over One Thousand Authorities. Not for General Perusal.'

Published in 1891 in Washington and written by the honorable John Gregory Bourke, a proud and highranking member of the US army and part time scientist.

Its as discusting as it is interesting. I lost several pounds while reading it too.

So much for proposing... lol
