"I'm trying to quit." - Just do that. There's no need for these substitutes. How many a day do you smoke? Raise a goal, smoke every day less and less. Or every week, if it's too hard. I did the same when I gave up biting my fingernails: every week I stopped biting one finger.
You are pure, you are snow.

It's not that easy for everybody, not everyone can just suddenly go cold turkey. lol

I didn't say "stop smoking immediately" wink If you smoke 30 cigarettes per day - smoke only 25 (for example) the next week. Then 22 etc.

You have to learn to smoke less and less. It will be VERY difficult. It's just like if you wanted to give up masturbating. BUT you can make it, just like another people. Good luck!

Just enjoy life to the fullest and smoke if that makes you happy

The best way to stop is to quit immediately. A lot of people who try it with your reducing method fall into relapse very quickly. There are many studies about that. So if you really want to quit then throw all your cigarettes away and stay strong. That's how I did it 15 years ago. It's hard but it works!!!

I found the best way was to start telling myself where I could smoke and where I couldnt. Like no smoking in the car or in the house...anyones house, even if they allowed smoking...then I started limiting my daily smokes by planning when I would have them during my work day etc and then eliminating one every few days to the point where I was only allowing myself 3 a day and if I smoked them all during the day then none at night...got to the point where by the time I got to my 3rd I didn't even want it and they started tasting gross to me and the smell was awful...you will start getting a better sense of smell and taste the less you smoke. Sometimes chewing a piece of gum or sucking on a mint when you want a smoke helps get rid of the need feeling and when you finally get to where you know that it is in fact a want not a need makes it easier to decide to have one or not cause if you wanna quit you just make the choice to not need them & when the want feeling comes around its easier to decide not to have one.

Some people can quit cold turkey, others can use stop smoking aids. The important thing is to not give up, its ok to try something and fail, just try again and you will eventually find the thing that works for you, good luck!

I've seen them on TV and I just don't see how they could satisfy someone's urge for a cigarette. It's the nicotine that we're addicted to, not the act of sucking on something and just blowing out air. Hell, if sucking on something was the cure, I would have been able to quit smoking years ago. lol

If someone tries them and they work, let me know so I can try them. They better come in menthol though. lol

Spoken like a true nonsmoker. lol

It's not that simple. Do you know how many serial killers would be on the streets if cigarettes just ceased to exist tomorrow? lol It is a very strong addiction. I've been out shopping before for a few hours and when I'd come out of the stores, I'd be absolutely dying for a cigarette and when I'd get in the car and get that first puff, it was relief that felt like someone who had been under water for a while and came up and took a breath of air.

I've had friends that stopped smoking and they said that they could taste more flavor in thier food once they stopped smoking. A lot of them have started back smoking because it really is a drug. Once they have a tragedy or a lot of stress in their life, they'll call themselves smoking just one cigarette to relieve the stress and that one cigarette leads to another and another. They remind me of an alcoholic. They're not really cured but they're always in "recovery".

As for a piece of gum or a mint to get your mind off of smoking. That doesn't work for me. The times when the urge to smoke is the greatest is right after you eat something. If I eat so much as a small bag of potato chips, I'll be wanting a cigarette afterwards.

Exactly. I smoked for seven years, about 35 cigarettes a day. And I quit from one day to the other. It was hard, but it's possible.

I kinda see it that way too. Being gay with no children, if I live to be old enough that I can't take care of myself, I have no children to come by and check on me or get me the help that I would need so I have no desire to live to be 100. I'd rather enjoy myself while I can instead of living my whole life miserable trying to quit addictions that help me to get through the day.

If you smoke, i'd go with added chemical free tobacco and no paper.

especially normal cigarettes, they contain a lot of solvents to burn right.

I have quit, it's not impossible but you have to want it.

I really don't understand what "enyoing life" has to do with getting drunk and smoking stinky cigarettes. I'm not gay but I don't have children myself too, don't want to become a father, don't drink, don't smoke and still have the feeling that I enjoy my life very much and want to live forever if possible.

I know several people who have quit using them. I bought for my dad because he has copd. Unfortuanately it didn't help him. He thinks he has everyone convinced he's quit. But he hasn't. Don't know why a 60 year old man would do that.

Smoker past 10 plus years. Today is day 5 of cold turkey no more smoking. Trust me it was hard too, took the past 3 months to work up to, and I actually starting smoking more in anticipation, and then I thought, "I'll never quit" and then I woke up the other day and just didn't want them anymore!!

So good luck!! nod

Oh yes it helps if you have something to motivate you. Being broke and meeting a guy who would absolutlely hate smoker's breath was good motivation or me!!! biggrin I'm also working out more and eating better!!biggrin

Really OT, but a friend of mine quit by setting goals for herself by saying "I can't smoke before 10am" and then "12 noon" and so on. That worked very well for her. smile Eventually she forgot about smoking altogether, she didn't do any of that bullshit "party smoker" or anything like that.

twocents

I smoked 22 years in total.

I once stopped cold turkey. Was very happy I quit, then at a nice summerday at the beach, I thought I could smoke one cigarette, just for fun. I got back to smoking a package a day within a forthnight.

I once stopped 9 months. I don't remember why I relapsed.

Last time I stopped I wanted to relate to someone who was addicted. I wanted to experience the process of stopping an addiction. I went to a hospital that has a specialized smoking-clinic. It was great. By bloodwork it was established what kind of smoker I was and with a psychologis I discussed thouroughly all the withdrawal symptoms I was afraid to experience. We discussed al my coping styles for every symptom might it occur.

I also got medication (brand name Champix) that made me not even want to smoke anymore after I took that for two weeks. I took the medication while not smoking and breaking all the positive assocications for certain environments (cafe, smoke after dinner, smoke with coffee at terrace, etcetera) and then stopped medication under supervision of the doctor at the hospital.

I was in the middle of a fierce divorce, had financial trouble, isolated from social life, lost friends, etcetera. It was one of the thoughest times ever in my life. And I didn't smoke one cigarette, nor did I ever feel like smoking.

I have had very few cravings and when they occur, I'm just so happy to not be addicted anymore.

I wish for everybody who is addicted to encounter a great service at a hospital or other facility like I did. I could have never stopped smoking on my own.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

CM7, your posts worry me a little. You seem to feel depressed, and you may even be depressed. When you'r experiencing a depression, that influences everything; the way you perceive events and interpret any kind of behaviour of others that you encounter. When you'r in the middle of it, you think that the way you think is the 'truth' and that life really is not worthwhile living because it's all bad.

Even if you'r not experiencing a clinical depression, I really recommend you to read the book "Feeling good" by Dr. Burns (has been translated around the world). And if you experience these anxious and depressed feelings, you might feel a lot of relief when you can talk to somebody who can be of help.

The Beck Institute might help you to find a well trained and good counselor.

http://www.beckinstitute.org/

Wish you the best and hope that you will search for a solution for any suffering by reaching out for help and not by acts that harm you or your loved ones.
