So the record you posted only has six songs on it? Cause I see 6 lines.

I guess so. I just grabbed some random record picture. Usually records don't hold more than 22 minutes per side. You can go up to 35 minutes maximum per side, but the volume and quality of the music gets a little bit worse the longer the record is. That's one drawback to vinyl, most new albums on vinyl only put like 3 or 4 songs per side so there's no possible loss in sound quality.

How does the Prince records hold up?

These two young guys are beautiful. Can you believe how they're talking? Us older folk take vinyl for granted, these guys actually really want to understand / or are helping each other...we must go easy on them. Anyone in the know realises vinyl has an infinitely better and richer sound.

Most of mine are beat up since I bought them used, but Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 were just remastered on vinyl, and though I don't own the new remasters, everyone else said they sound great. The reissues are a tad expensive for me though, being that I already own the originals.
Most Prince records only have about 21 or so minutes per side, so I'd guess the quality of a *new* Prince record would be great.
The Prince reissues can be purchased here: http://www.rhino.com/prin...rty-mind-2.
I do own Lotusflow3r on vinyl, and for me it sounds on par with the CD version, but really I have a cheap record player, so the quality might be even better on an expensive $300+ record player.

I also own Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation on vinyl, and it's b-side runs about 32 minutes, and there is a slightly noticeable quality loss.

If I may ask another question. Do you have to buy a Single to get the B-Sides?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes, generally. For example, Prince released a song called "Sex" - the only way to legally buy that song is to buy Prince's "Scandalous!" single, as "Sex" is the B-Side to that single. Prince is one of the few artists who often released exclusive b-sides to his singles, so you won't have to worry about B-sides with most other artists.
If you need information about Prince's b-sides, and what b-sides are on what singles, etc. I could give you more information about that too. [Edited 7/24/11 2:16am]

My advice is to not overthink this. For all those decades kids were buying records to have fun. I can't say I've ever noticed any loss in sound quality whatsoever and imo you don't need a $400 phonograph to enjoy them. My brother is an audiophile, yet doesn't know a damn thing about enjoying music...
Charlotte was right, get to the thrift store and spend a couple bucks on some old records! You can learn everything you need to know about them in about 1 minute.

I was surrounded by thousands of records. And as a kid I got very clear instructions how to get them out of the carton. I got tense in advance, because the records were so holy....
-never touch the record with your fingers, only hold them on the side!
Then, without touching the record itself, only by carefull holding it on the side, if my dad was in a good mood, I was allowed to lay it on the table. Ofcourse, without touching it with my fingers.
By that time I already was so nervous, that holding the needle above the right spot on the record was a challenge. My hads were shaking. A scratch due to the needle was like committing murder at our house. Believe me, I think I can still place the needle at the right song, because I was trained well.
Have fun with your vinyl, however, please don't get upset with a scratch now and then. It's not worth the stress!!!

vinyl is a pain in the ass. Just my opinion.
But, to answer part of your question, get yourself a quality player, don't get a cheap piece of shit. Vinyl does have it's own sound that is very nice for certain music, but you won't hear it if you have some cheap ass piece.

Older heads? Are you for real?
Indie and used music stores aren't carrying Radiohead, Kings of Leon and Jack White on vinyl for the geriatric set.

I rather call you an "old head" istead of just "old".

Since you're just starting out, get yourself one of the cheap record players that are part of a combination tabletop stereo that includes a radio, CD player, (possibly a cassette player/recorder), and a record player on the top. If you like it, then eventually graduate to a component system and get a good and more expensive turntable.
Used records in a record store range in price according to how rare they are. Some of the Prince stuff is expensive but most records range from $3 to $10. It's just according to where you buy them and how much the owner is asking for them. A lot of the times, they can be talked down on the price. You can also find them in flea markets and garage sales for next to nothing. But once again, it just depends on who is selling it.
I've been buying records since 1978 and very few of mine are scratched and very few of mine skip. It's just according to how well you take care of them. Always keep albums in their covers and inside sleeves and they should last a lifetime. Every blue moon you may find that one of your records has an unexplainable scratch or skip over the years, no matter how well you take care of them. It just happens sometimes but not a whole lot. From my experience, I have found CDs to be more fragile than vinyl. Andy is a four letter word.

I know it sounds totally unbelievable, but you have to trust the oldies on this one!
You need to get that 50 cent record and practice holding it, because it's a nifty trick to pick it up and turn it over nicely without leaving greasy fingerprints all over it

I bought 95% of my Prince records when they were brand new and they are in wonderful condition. Andy is a four letter word.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Exactly. Buy the cheapest one you can find and practice holding it. However, records aren't as fragile as a lot of people make them out to be. I always hold mine from the edge but I have all my old records that I've bought since 1978. Some of those real old ones have been through the ringer. I've bought records since I was in the sixth grade and started playing them on one of this little Snoopy record players that looked like a miniature suitcase. And when the needle wore out and the record started skipping, I didn't know that needles wore out back then. I got a penny and put in on the arm of the needle with a rubber band. You can just imagine what that pressure was doing grinding into the groove of the record.
That's another thing. Needles will wear out. If a whole lot of your records start skipping, it's time for a new needle. When you get a new needle, the skipping stops....that is, unless the record is scratched. Andy is a four letter word.
