Clint Eastwood....YAY or NAY? Clint is one of my all time favorite actors. I really, really like his movies, and he´s one of the few actors who have made a very successful transition to directing movies. And he´s got such a wide range, from action flics to drama or even comedy.
Even though we´re probably polar opposites when it comes to politics, I also really like him as a political person and he comes across as a guy that I would genuinely respect in real life. And even though he was a strong supporter of Nixon and Reagan, he still opposed the Iraq war and the Bush administration, so kudos for sticking with his political party yet still speaking his mind when he felt the need to do so. I wish all Republicans were more like him. I really, really like this guy.
He just has this aura. And I know someone who knew Clint when he was the mayor of Carmel back in the early 90s, and she has nothing but very fond memories of Mr.Eastwood. Clint Eastwood is , IMO, also a very inspiring person , and a good role model as far as discipline and integrity are concerned.
I also admire him for sticking to his principles, working out religiously and staying in top mental and physical health (okay, the botox and surgery were unnecessary but that´s just me).
And he´s into music, too. My friend often heard him on the piano, and he´s made that wonderful movie about Charlie Parker.
So, what are your favorite Clint Eastwood movies?
I like almost all of them. I also like The Bridges of Madison County, though most of his fanbase probably didn´t like it that much.
Big YAY for Clint Eastwood.

yay... I find it interesting that even though he carries such a serious vibe, I can't recall him playing the bad guy.

Well, some people would probably think that Dirty Harry was the bad guy, not the good guy. But yeah, you´re right. That´s an interesting thought actually. Dirty Harry was the "anti-hero". Probably the first popular "anti-hero" in film history if I recall correctly.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Don´t forget Taxi Driver and Rocky Balboa. I´m not sure who was first. And of course it is debatable whether Rocky is an anti-hero but that´s what Sly called him.
Good point though. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I'm sure it was Dirty Harry who was first, then it was Taxi Driver. I don't know about Rocky. He seemed more traditional good guy than anti-hero to me. Remember all the good praise they gave to the dude who inspired Rocky that went toe to toe with Ali? Chuck Wepner I think was his name. But yeah Travis Bickle was cool. Taxi Driver and Dirty Harry are just CLASSICS with a capital C.

OMG! what can I say?
probably my fav actor & director. I certainly don't own all his movies, but I've seen them all, lol. He has some dated turds, but still watchable...
the Dollars Trilogy is still very interesting and kick-ass, specially TG,TB&TU, better than any technicolor american western of the 60-66 era I also recommend one obscure film of the 60s, The Beguiled, about an injured northern soldier trapped in a house full of southern "dames" during the Civil War. It sounds like a porno, but it isn't, lol. In fact, it's a disturbing movie.
I don't care that much about his 70s films (ironically, his "golden era" as an actor). Dirty Harry 1 and 2 are ok but I don't think they are great movies, just controversial movies for the early-70s audience, when some big cities of the USA were full of crime, drugs and corrupt cops. It's funny, but I've never thought of San Francisco as a "crime city" anyway, lol. High Plains Drifter (his first western as a director/actor, 73) was disturbing, but not entertaining. The Outlaw Josey Wales (76) was ok...but he spent the WHOLE movie spitting tobaco so the film is unwatchable. Many critics dismissed Every Which Way But Loose (78) as a "Benny Hill" comedy but I actually like that movie A LOT, a personal guilty pleasure... lol
the early 80s were a difficult era, but he made a comeback in 1983 with Sudden Impact (Dirty Harry IV) which is dated as hell now "Go Ahead, Make my Day", lollolol. I didn't like Pale Rider (looks like a ripoff of "Shane") and Heartbreak Ridge was good, he was tryin' to conquer the "MTV/Top Gun" teen audience there, and he partially succeeded.
Then arrived masterpieces like Bird, White Hunter Black Heart, Unforgiven, A Perfect World, Bridges of Madison, Mystic River (after a commercial slump in the late-90s), Million Dollar Baby, Letters from Iwo Jima, Gran Torino, Invictus...
THIS GUY IS A LEGEND
it's so sad that he (was) also a CRAPPY husband, and a cold womanizer, and many of his action films are definitely BAD films But other than that, he's a very fine human being/artist, lol

^^ My favorite movie is "Play Misty for Me". It makes "Fatal Attraction" look like a cartoon.

omg! Play Misty for Me, I forgot about that one! I didn't like it I hated Clint's character, he was such an asshole. I wanted the crazy lady to win

Oh I love that one too. And I love "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly", my favorite part of the dollars trilogy. And Escape from Alcatraz. There are sooo many good movies that it´s difficult to name them all, and it´s also difficult to even remember the few turds because he´s simply made so many good ones. And I´m very happy for him that he´s still in good health and mentally and physically capable of making more great movies. Too bad that Gran Torino was supposedly his last film as an actor but it´s good to know that he´ll stay active as a director in the future. He´s a good example of an artist getting better and better in the later stages of his life. This can´t be said about many artists. The movies he´s directed that Joe Tyler mentioned above are true masterpieces and among my favorite movies. He does a lot for charity, too. A true legend. Big yay for me.
"Bridges of Madison County" is one of my fave films by him only because it showed how versatile he is.
I hated "Bird" though. I assume his heart was in the right place when he made this film, but the ending result was all shades of fucked up.

I dig some of his films more than others, but in general, big yay!

Unforgiven would be my favorite, btw. Pretty sure it would make my top ten favorite films list. I've got a soft spot for Heartbreak Ridge, too, because I saw it in the theater when I was younger and thought it was cool. Now I realize its kind of crap, but I still like it.

"Bronco Billy" is my favorite Eastwood movie. When he's had enough of that sheriff and says "No one messes with my cowboy", that was just absolutely great.
