The South Island is being covered in sanw as we speak. Its the first big snow in 3 years and it may even reach Wellington. In the summer here, very few people have air con, due to the cost. Most of us (But not me) have heat pumps, some which cool in the summer. Usually a fan suffices and of course opening the window. Temperatures seldom get above the high 20s here, so air con is not necessary.

The Scottish chap, would be right, most average summer highs in Scotland are like 15 -22 celsius on a warm day and as low as 12 on a cold one (My partners son and daughter are going to Aberdeen next month and are taking jackets and jerseys as most days its 14 degrees and raining. And this is August). Its only really America, Central Asia and the Tropics that have super hot summers

I think some of the Americans are complaining because in certain regions of America... its NOT supposed to get that hot at all. There is an unusual heat wave hitting the central northern part of the country right now where summers are usually warm and short lived.

This year my state was also hit with tornadoes... and Massachusetts NEVER gets tornadoes. Its goes to show you can never predict mother nature. wink

The current 'hot summer' in America has been on the news here. It does look climate change is a reality.

I knew it was a reality around 2003-ish. It was like 70 degrees in December that year on some days. neutral

We always have several days that are 70 degrees in December down here every year. 30 degrees one day, 70 degrees the next. It just pisses me off because I love winter time, the colder the better and those warm days just ruin the winter. It's not fair. If we're going to have 70 degree days sometimes in the winter, then dammitt, we need to have 30 degree days sometimes in the summer. lol

I don't think fancy central air conditioning has much of anything to do with it. Some people like the heat, can function normally, even thrive in it. Some people hate it, turn into whining children when it gets too hot, don't want to do anything but sit and melt. There's a large range in between those two extremes, as well. Me, I freakin' hate it. But, thankfully, I also live in an area where homes haven't been built without air conditioners for a very long time (well, except on my damn island, where a LOT of them don't have air mad ).

No one around me seems to want to hear it, but I looooooooove summer. We’ve had a hotter and more humid summer than usual (one of our hottest July’s on record) and the humidity in Minnesota is no joke. Folks think of us as the frozen tundra, but we get the other extreme as well – temps in the 90s with dew points in the 70s.

In any case, I don’t mind it a bit. I’ll enjoy fall when it comes and I love the cooler temps of spring but I’ll take weeks of hot weather over the cold we get in the winter any time.

What makes this more dramatic is that for the last two winters we've had record low temps, high snowfall, and most ice storms and now this

confused neutral

The triple-digit string in Dallas-Fort Worth is now only three days from an all-time record after another record high temperature on Tuesday: 107 at DFW Airport.

The record was 106, set in 1936 and tied in 1942. So far in August, temperatures have been 9 to 12 degrees above normal, according to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.

On Tuesday morning, the temperature at the weather service's official reporting station dropped to 84 degrees, unofficially tying a record set in 1947 for the highest low temperature on Aug. 9.

There was a 10 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening.

The DFW temperature reached 100 during the noon hour Tuesday to extend the streak of consecutive days with triple-digit temperatures to 39.

There have been 46 days of 100 or more overall in the summer of 2011. The streak record of 42 days was set in 1980, when the overall mark of 69 also was reached.

The heat streak record is appearing likely to be tied Friday as the weather service long-range forecast calls for high temperatures of at least 102 through then. As for breaking it, the forecast high for Saturday is for only 101.

We broke a record here in Michigan. Something like 47 days straight of 80+ degree temperatures. Finally getting a much needed break today with a high of 78 and a low in the uppers 50's!!!woot! headbang If I can just make it thru August, I'll be okay. Although we've had some awfully hot Septembers around here in the past.
