I think it's best to be at where you're at. With any West Coast city, you don't know what you can get:
I mean west coast Australia!

My other half has been nagging me to go to Perth but it's just so damn far away from anything else. I've heard it's lovely but I'm staying put!

you're very right, the smaller cities are very different! i just moved away from the south bay area to another city within california, and i love it so far though. but people do change based on location in this state.

I just wrote a whole bunch of really interesting stuff about the Bay Area and Northern California, but it all sucks, so I'm not going to post it.
However, Oakland is not a small city. Its actually the 47th most populated city in the United States. San Jose is 10th, and San Francisco is actually 13th. Beyond that its pretty fascinating how many of the top 200 are in SoCal compared to NorCal. I would have thought we'd have a few more up here.

That's the joint! I guess it's a California thing. I get a taste for them. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Me too, actually. Right up there where they still have huge wild evergreen forests, but there's also lot of snow and ice very near by. I might actually do it (probably in Alaska, though) if I didn't think I'd miss the Bay Area too damn much.

I can't wait to move back to the Bay Area when I can "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

SF is moist and breezy I love when you see tourists who think it's gonna be beaches and hot weather realizing they dressed incorrectly. I was born in California (Oakland) but moved to Virginia when I was 2 and lived there until I was 12 when I moved back to CA. I love the Bay Area
Amoeba Music and Rasputin are my favorite stores
b-boying/breakdancing in SF or in Berkeley
the comic book, anime, and video game stores
The malls: New Park Mall in Newark/Fremont, Sunvalley in Concord, and Hilltop in Richmond.
Farmer Market and flea markets on Ashby in Berkeley or in Downtown Oakland "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

In Berkeley, the Rasputin building and the Amoeba building are right next door to each other "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I've seen people walking cold thinking "What happened to the beaches and convertibles?"

people told me my city reminded me of SF (although I have no idea WHY unless they mean the mild weather) and I dressed accordingly. I'm used to 4 seasons in one day here so I'm always prepared.

It's scary, but they can't really predict earthquakes. However, the San Andrea's Fault is known to be very unstable with many regular, minor quakes. Thus when they see an increase in seismic activity, it could be a start and a warning sign of a bigger quake. So there is some time to predict, but it is not a lot. Even more scary, this last year we have seen major earthquakes in Japan, New Zealand and Chili. All corners of the Pacific, except for North America...
