I think its a hell you must experience for yourself over a great deal of time to FULLY understand it. Maybe somebody else can better put it into words. There are a few places out there that are nice to visit (Joshua Tree, Coachella, Death Valley) but I can say with a certainty that I could never live there. I drive out to Riverside at least once a year and ever that is almost too much for me.

Rural, conservative. Irrigated farms, desert, Salton Sea and the border. Not much else outside San Diego. There's San Bernardino and Riverside, but those folks associate with L.A. North of San Diego is the Republican stronghold of Orange County, almost as right wing as San Diego. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I swear I would never go past Big Sur again (and nowhere near inland) if I didn't have close friends in San Diego and several family members burried at Riverside National.

Funny, I just now remember that I saw the map outline on 'How the States Got Their Shapes' on the History Channel. I think that's how they originally wanted to set the boundaries for California - on the other side of the mountain range was supposed to be another part of another state. Makes sense but because of the gold rush California wanted to keep all the gold in California so they also claimed that area beyond the mountain range.

heck yeah let CA divide if it wants to. if the CA voters approve, why not? i'd go furtehr, even. i'd like to see the entire country divided into three nation states, along the time zone divides. what do you think about that? [Edited 7/14/11 9:27am]

Pardon my ignorance as I'm European but have the demographics of the state changed so that the Republicans might think that California will be practically unwinnable in the future? I see they haven't won there in the presidential election since 1988.
If so, isn't splitting the state a great way to gerrymander the presidential election?

Yep. Southern California is very conservative.

It could but Northern California still have a greater population and the net effect is that the Northern portion of the state would cancel out the SoCal.
