Women really DO have gaydar!

Well, some women, anyway. (Hi, PositivityNYC! wave )

Women really have gaydar say scientists

Women really do have gaydar, the ability to identify a gay man, according to new research indicating they developed the skill to filter out partners who cannot give them children.

Women become better at identifying if a man is homosexual or heterosexual simply by looking at his face during ovulation, because their heightened desire to find a mate increases their accuracy.

Researchers from the University of Toronto asked 40 female students to look at pictures of 80 men's faces and to say whether they thought they were gay or straight.

Half of the photos belonged to straight men, while the other 40 were openly gay.

The pictures didn't differ in expression or attractiveness and women were encouraged solely to use their intuition when guessing a man's sexual orientation.

Results, published in journal Psychological Science, revealed that the closer women were to peak ovulation, the better they were at predicting whether a man was straight or gay. And researchers also found that women who were turned-on sexually were even better at identifying a gay man.

Scientists tested another 40 women, half of whom were asked to read a story about a 'romantic encounter' before being shown the face photos, the other half weren't.

Women 'primed with a mating goal' after reading hot and heavy fiction were found to be more accurate at identifying a man's sexual orientation than those who hadn't.

However, the ability to predict sexual orientation only worked with male faces - a similar experiment which saw 34 women shown 200 female faces, half of whom were gay, half straight - revealed no relationship between the fertility cycle and the accuracy of a woman's judgement.

Study author Professor Nicholas Rule, from the department of psychology at the University of Toronto said: "This study shows that a woman can more accurately identify a man's sexual orientation when looking at his face, when she is closest to her time of peak ovulation.

"Further, having romantic thoughts or a mating goal heightens a woman's ability to discriminate between straight and gay men.

"This effect is not apparent when a woman is judging another female's orientation.

"This suggests that fertility influences a heterosexual woman's attention to potential mates rather than merely increasing sensitivity to sexual orientation or nonverbal cues more generally."

He added: "Together, these findings suggest that women's accuracy may vary across the fertility cycle because men's sexual orientation is relevant to conception and thus of greater importance as women are nearer to ovulation."

Funny. I really would have sworn that gaydar was a myth, maybe more of a "heightened sense of subcultural signals"-kinda thing. Oh well. You learn.

I have the most crappy gaydar. I tell myself, it's because I don't care what people are, and that sounds really honorable (and it's true), but it's actually just because .. I can hardly ever tell. And metrosexual men can get really angry when you ask for how long they've been out, trying to be nice and fortcoming.

Clearly you don't know how all that works. Women ovulate 12-14 days before Aunt Flow comes to town.

I thought peak ovulation was 12-14 days after the first day of your period. confuse

I think you're wrong about your vagina and I'm right.

Okay, first of all, there is no "peak ovulation" (even if they used that phrase in the article). There is one moment of ovulation - when the egg bursts out of the ovary (put that in your sig). There's no peak or off-peak.

Carrie is actually right - because ovulation can be delayed for any number of reasons. Usually, a woman will ovulate 12 to 14 days after the first day of her period. But if she's under stress (physical or emotional), ovulation may be delayed.

At the other end, a period starts 12 to 14 days after ovulation. If a woman hasn't gotten her period by 16 days after she ovulates, she's most likely pregnant.

nod

They should have said peak fertility (which is within a couple days of ovluation on either side).

What I find so insulting about all of this is how women think they can just quickly read such complex, multi-fasciated, nuanced wells of intrigue that we men are...and with such callous disregard for our textured courtship behaviors to boot! confused

Yeah right rolleyes

Women have the worst gaydar ever...Why ? because we get tangled in our presumptions

What is the phrase that almost every woman has used aleast once when rejected??...."Oh he must be gay"

Women are VERY intutive but are way to clouded with doubt.

Not mention so many women marrying closeted gay men ..lol please
