Origin of Valentine's Day

Since Valentine's Day is right around the corner...

Does anyone know the true origin of this day?

A friend of my mother said it came from Europe when a guy by the name of St. Valentine was killing women and ripping their heart out. Once this serial killer was caught they celebrated. When the day was brought to the US they changed the meaning and said it was a day for lovers.
