Damn that's rough. My ex was telling me about the whole situation a while ago. Something about Sony sending out warnings to everyone about banning, and then putting spyware in software updates and whatnot. That's terrible! They're targeting everyone when they should be targeting the hackers, but then the hackers and the users of the hacked stuff want to play innocent. It messes things up for people who don't participate, and it makes Sony look so bad!

My ex used to kcik butt in Mortal Kombat competitions and I know he hated to give those up because of the drama. But since he had some stuff on his PS3, he didn't want to take the risk and no longer gets on the network. I wanted a PS3 and was waiting for the price to drop on a used one with PS2 backwards compatability. Now, I think I'll just stick to my 360.

Sorry to hear that. sad

razz I'm pretty sure he's all over that stuff. That boy is SICK with that game. He has people cancelling matches left and right. He knows all the tricks and stuff, knocking people out and gettin' instant fatalities...lol. He's hella fanatic about it. I saw the previews, and thanks to his craziness about it, I want the game...and it was never my thing when it first came out. I'm strictly Capcom.

Yeah, if he loves that series as much as I do, he's playing it right now. Tons of new moves, including the sick x-ray attacks. The strategy guide is a must.

Sony admits utter PSN failure: your personal data has been stolen

Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get. The hackers have all your personal information, although Sony is still unsure about whether your credit card data is safe. Everything else on file when it comes to your account is in the hands of the hackers.

In other words, Sony's security has failed in a spectacular fashion, and we're just now finding out about it. In both practical and PR terms, this is a worst-case scenario.

What did they get?

Here is the data that Sony is sure has been compromised if you have a PlayStation Network Account:

  • Your name
  • Your address (city, state, and zip)
  • Country
  • E-mail address
  • Birthday
  • PSN password and login name

"It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained," Sony announced. While the company claims that there is "no evidence" that credit card information has been compromised, it won't rule out the possibility.

Their advice is to be safe, rather than sorry. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

What can you do?

You are warned to keep watch over your accounts, and to be aware of your heightened risk of fraud due to the security breach. "For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of e-mail, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information," the company said. "Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information."

Sony has also provided a wealth of sources for data and protection against identity theft.

You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov. For Maryland residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202; telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us.

To be fair, Sony does apologize for the inconvenience. There is still no update on when service will be restored, but that is the least of your concerns if you have a PlayStation Network account. It's time to change your passwords, at the very least, and if you're like to be completely safe it's not a bad idea to cancel your credit or debit cards and request replacements.

We'll continue to follow this story as it develops.

eek DAMN. I finally got a chance to sit down and read the full story, and Sony is fuckin' with y'all. I feel sorry for you, because a similar thing JUST happened to me with my bank. Somebody tried to get all up in my account because of that Bank of America Security breach, and I don't have that many dimes to my name! (Self-employed atm). I feel sorry for my ex now. Even though he might have quit playing due to Sony's past with that warnning letter, I KNOW he's got account info all up and through.

I'm so sorry to hear that, PSN users. sad I hope your stuff is safe!

1) Its always baffled me why these motherfuckers must have your address ....it makes not a jot of difference to them. Date of Birth I could understand if the blacked certain content....but they dont.

2) Virtually ebvery 2 days I get email from Sony Playstation saying "buy this", "sign up to this"...they get breached and we hear nothing...just soem second hand story rattling around the internet.

3) Youcant do shit about it becuase you cant change any details until these idiots get the PSN available again...so not only have they sat on this nfo for ATLEAST 1 week thus giving the hackers a head start...theyre still letting tehm disappear into this distance by not allowing people to change the details and, wherever possible, make the stolen data obselete.

Money grabbing fuckers...Sony and the hackers mad

AND ALL THE ADVICE IS JUST FOR USA USERS!!!

^ People don't care. You can't just think your privacy won't be invaded when you're online in any kind of format.

That being said, sorry for those suffering from the outage. I hate they're even blaming it on Japan's problems. I doubt it's that at all. They're just not willing to fix it unless they're in the mood to. Until then, just find some other stuff to do until it (hopefully) comes back.
