I totally disagree with your jaded "seen it all" opinion of this fuckin excellent movie! This movie is totally different to "As Good As It Gets"...it doesn't yank on the shmaltzy sentimentality strings so obviously at all, in the way that AGAIG did. It was far more subtle and measured. I think it was brilliant and those who don't think Jack Nicolson deserves an Oscar need their pulse checked!

Hmmph.

Why because for once Nicholson doesnt get to be just Jack Nicholson in a picture and thats a 'bravo" performance and Im jaded?..please. And that litle pic at the end of the movie isnt meant to manipulate after his poor poor pitiful set of recent events..please...tis is the same as As Good As It Gets..Nicholson just has to act silly in a few scenes or even normal and not badass Jack and everyone falls at his feet. And I say that not because Im jaded. He was really good in Wolf. So I disagree with your "gee this is some really excellent acting" opinion of this ordinary movie.

You rate "Wolf" over "About Schmidt". disbelief Enough said. You could have mentioned "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" or one of his other great movies...but "Wolf"? "Please" yourself.

there was no ned to edit your first answer-repsonse. Of course Cuckoos Nest or even Five Easy Pieces is more worthy than Wolf..I was just stating an example of something silly that showed I was not "jaded' as you said about Jack Nicholson as an actor..so why use an example of a legitimate and recognized great performance that several oscars were awarded to deservedly as well..that would be too easy. And that was not to say that Wolf was a better film than Schmidt but it showed him actually acting more that just a stiff guy that is praised as such good acting. sigh

What you call "stiff" I call "understated". This role would also have fit Robert De Niro quite well also, Lord knows he needs a boost in the credibility department these days. However, Nicholson was PERFECT for this movie and it wouldn't have been the same without him. Bates was brilliant also.

In my opinion Nicholson conveyed many subtle feelings of general loss and "missed opportunity "throughout the film with measured nuance in his marvellous facial expressions and well-placed sighs. So what, we disagree. You seem to be from the elitist school of thought that dictates that that a movie blaring with talent and superior acting and that gets rave reviews CAN'T be any good because so many people like it and it's "too obvious a choice" (to paraphrase your thoughts about this film and "One Flew Over..."). Sometimes a great film is great because it DOES have mass appeal and shoots straight to the soul with it's message. I don't think it was a shameless tear-jerker and all. No one stole those tears from you...it obviously resonated with you at a deep level for it to bring you to tears. It almost sounds like you're embarrassed to admit to crying at a good movie!

Thats my point..facial expressions and sighs...whoo boy!

No because I like so called crappy movie s as well. Im definitely not an elitist--I just have no problem with saying that a performance that isn't a great stretch is not a great performance. maybe this not stretching ones acting chops os the brilliancy of it?

No I have no qualms with saying I teared up at a movie or else I wouldn't have said that. And what I teared up for was because a litle poor bopy drew a pic of something he didnt have..not because of Jacks character or experiences. He did touch me on top of the RV scene. And where did I say it was not a good film. I said I dont think it deserves all the accolades it is getting. You said "big deal we disagree" and you go off..so obviously it is a big deal. Sorry about that.

I liked About Schmidt too, actually, it wasn't loaded with action, sure, but I thought the story and dialogue were great. I actually laughed a LOT during the film. And it was nice to see Nicholson not pulling faces just to play up to the camera...

Movies rarely make me cry. Only music and heartache do that. The last movie that threatened to make me cry was Bjork's movie.
