Kids with pierced ears?

My daughter is 6 1/2 and has asked if she can get her ears pierced. I feel a bit uncomfortable with it to be honest - she seems too young. But a lot of girls in her class wear little earrings, and i've spoken to a few people about this and most people don't see a problem with it.

What are your thoughts?

If a child is old enough to make an informed decision on their own and responsible enough to manage the after care properly on their own, then I generally don't see a problem. I don't think there's a magic age for that, it really depends on the child. 6 does sound a bit young, though.

I don't like the idea of piercing a child's ears when they are too young to make the decision themselves. It's their body.

My daughters first piercings were done when she was two months old, at the age of 8 she wanted another and she got that one done as well. She wanted more after that one but I refused to get her more.

I had her pediatrician pierce my daughter's ears at 6 months old. I knew it would be pretty.

Lisa, if you do it, be careful with the weight of the jewelery. You want her ear holes to stay like . and not look like |

shake Trust me, if she gets her ears pierced anytime before she's 16, it's strictly studs - nothing heavy or dangly.

It surprises me that people have their babies ears pierced. Absolutely no offence intended to anyone...It just seems a little shocking to me.

I just wouldn't want to inflict pain when it's not been asked for.

It's just earrings, not a septum piercing. I don't see a problem with doing it from the time they're babies as long as you just do little studs till they're older.

Well, I meant as a baby. But I think if a kid is 5 or 6 and they want something it's a good life lesson that sometimes there's pain involved with shit we want. lol

I wanted my ear pierced in the 6th/7th grade because of George Michael lol and my mom said fine, but did it with the needle and thread. Bitch. lol

My grandma (god bless her, she is not doing well right now) told my mother when she got her ears pierced in 1980 or so that "only Italians" get their ears pierced lol

WTF does that even mean (other than that my grandma is just a little bit prejudiced)?

African American kids tend to get their ears pierced at early ages. Don't know if that's cultural or not. White folks are a wee bit protective of their little terrors..lol

When I was 5, I begged my mom to let me get my ears pierced. She agreed that I could get them pierced for my 6th birthday on the condition that I would not cry and scream at the ear piercing store when they did it. I remember biting my lip and trying not to let my tears fall; although in hindsight it was probably the sound of the piercing gun just as much as the prick that made me want to cry. I remember being really excited to pick out all sorts of cute earrings and I couldn't wait for them to heal so I could change out the studs.

My mom got her ears pierced when she was in nursing school, with a needle. When I was in high school, my friend and I were bored one day and decided to pierce my ear. We used ice to numb my ear and then an earring stud to pierce it! eek My parents didn't even notice until it got a little infected. lol

My mom got hers pierced after a trip to Puerto Rico in 1972. A lady at the convention my mom and dad went to lost an expensive earring and my mother (knowing nothing about such things) decided that pierced earrings would be more "secure" than clip-ons.

So she bought a couple pairs of pierced earrings while she was down there and went to a doctor to get her ears pierced. (This was before ear piercing became popular and you could get it done at the mall.)

Of course, as soon as she had it done, I wanted mine done, too. So she came up with the rule that my sisters and I had to be 13 before we got them done. (She figured that was sufficiently mature to be able to handle the hygiene aspects of getting them pierced.) We all got them pierced in turn.

And then...my youngest sister wanted hers done at...I don't know...10 or something. And my mom said, "It's okay with me. But you'll have to ask your sisters, since they all had to wait until they were 13. If they say it's okay, you can do it."

By that time, I was 17 and really didn't give a rip. So she got to get them done. lol
