ABC cancels 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' ABC cancels 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' Since it premiered in 1970, "All My Children" has received more than 30 Emmy Awards and made history by airing daytime TV's first same-sex kiss between two women as well as its first lesbian wedding and the first coming-out story for a transgender character. The Emmy Award-winning "One Live to Live" has been on the air since 1968 and was among the first in daytime television to cover interracial romance, gang violence and teen pregnancy. The show made national headlines when it introduced a gay teen character (played by Ryan Phillippe) and was later honored by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). In place of the two soaps will be two new series, "The Chew," a food show co-hosted by Mario Batali set to premiere in September 2011, and "The Revolution" (working title), a makeover show hosted by Tim Gunn that focuses on "health and lifestyle transformations" that will make its debut in January 2012. "While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I can't help but recognize how bittersweet the change is," said Brian Frons, president of daytime for Disney ABC/Television Group, in a statement. Noting that the two new series were inspired by the success of "The View," Frons said, "We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on 'real life' takeaways." AMC has recycling that same story lines since at least the early 1980's.

YAY!!
My best friend has been watching this crap since we were 10, she's even brainwashed her daughters to watch it. Needless to say, her life is one big mess a lot of the time, and I blame this garbage for it.

Kind of a miracle they lasted this long, when you think about it.

I stopped watching these shows years ago, but I'm still sad to see them go.
I'm firmly planted in denial

I never watched either one of those shows but I hate to see them go because they were such a staple of daytime TV before TV as a whole turned into complete bullshit. The only daytime soap I used to watch was "As The World Turns" and it got cancelled last year. I had stopped watching it in the mid 1990s but I still hated to see it go off the air.
But as for replacing them with cooking, makeover, or healthy lifestyle type shows, hell, there are whole networks dedicated to that even if you don't have cable. Well, at least it's not another one of those rediculous ghetto ass court shows that bring on the most degrading people. But there's nothing on TV, day or night, that is fantasy and escapism where you can escape your day to day problems for a little while. Andy is a four letter word.

I've been watching these shows since I was an embryo. I weened myself at around age 17 but if they are truly going to be canceled then I will have to start watching and find out who kidnapped who's baby and married who's husband and went to prison on the count of some fake murder in which the deceased is still alive but has lost their memory from being hit over the head by an evil twin. I'M NOT SAYING YOU'RE UGLY. YOU JUST HAVE BAD LUCK WHEN IT COMES TO MIRRORS AND SUNLIGHT!

Used to watch them a lot back in the day, along with "Ryan's Hope". End of an era.

I thought All My Children would ALWAYS be on TV "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

So basically, we'll only have The Young & The Restless (CBS), Days Of Our Lives (NBC), & General Hospital (ABC) left standing like a triple threat match or something.

Reality TV shows has killed the Daytime Soap Operas. Plain & Simple.
Just think about it. Why would people be bother watching All My Children to see Erica Kane marry her 25th (?!!!?) husband, when those people can watch Catching Up With The Kardashians to see Kim get a new black boyfriend?

THAT^ show can never get cancelled until Luke & Laura are remarried (again) and they finally lived happily ever after.

1980's soaps were the best part of the era.

As I commented at another website dealing with TV, the daytime soap opera became a victim of changing lifestyles. It's no accident that the heyday of daytime soap operas happened in the early 1980's, which was at the infancy of cable and just before the mass migration of adult middle-class women into the workforce. Once most women began working full-time, they had less time to catch up on soap operas, so that limited their viewing options. Then came the trashy talk shows like Jerry Springer and Maury Povich, which offered up real life melodrama about adultery, paternity suits, and domestic violence without having to pay a staff of writers and a slate of actors to produce. Then the death knell came with reality shows like The Hills, Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives franchise, The Kardashians, and their knockoffs on E! and VH1. Once again, it offered melodrama from real-life people, and it was broadcast several times a week day and night, so eager fans could catch it at any time, unlike the daytime soaps, which could only be seen in the daytime unless you had a DVR or SoapNet. The daytime soap appears to be going the way of the TV western and variety shows.

This is sad news, but let's face it.....daytime soaps have reached the end of the line. There's nowhere else to go! How many times can Erica fall in love and get married? These shows recycle the same storylines over and over and over. How many times have you seen these storylines....
***A woman gets pregnant,switches/changes the paternity results and lies about who the 'real' father is
***Someone is shot during a wedding ceremony
***Someone develops amnesia and doesn't remember anything
***A presumed 'dead' character comes back to life, surprising everybody
***A woman falls in love with her husband's brother
***A man falls in love with his wife's sister
***A woman sleeps with her daughter's boyfriend
40 years of the same stuff!

At least they're keeping General Hospital, it is my favorite on ABC. I've been addicted to OLTL and GH for over 20 years (thanks mom). However, cancelling OLTL will slowly wean me away from daytime soaps...maybe "You need to laydown and let me show you how we do this thing up in funky town. From the heart of Minnesota here come the purple Yoda guaranteed to bring the dirty new sound! Come on, now!"

U forgot about all those storylines where plastic surgery was done on someone 2 look EXACTLY like another character (and it's funny how the voice is the same, 2) Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

I was born and raised on ABC Soaps! Literally...not figuratively!
My mother was in the hospital giving birth to me, watching All My Children, just a little over a month after it first aired.
I know Erica Kane so well. I honestly, know her better than I know several of my flesh and blood Aunties that share my DNA! I couldn't tell you on a bet...the names of all of my Uncles...but I can name ALL of Erica Kane's husbands! Believe that!
That being said, I have not watched AMC nor OLTL in over a decade...because the powers that be...forgot about the fans...that watched and enjoyed their product!
Choosing to focus solely...on targeting...a new and younger demographic.
They did all that they could, while at the exact same time...alienating THOSE OF US... that made them successful and this IS the final result of what inevitably happens...when you ignore... the solidified core...of your fanbase!
It may not happen...all at once...but it will...eventually...happen! Somebody around here better recognize...or this will certainly end up being their fate...as well! I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I'm pissed! And I don't give a damn how many times the storylines have been recycled.

Things that people fail to realize is that this has nothing to really do with Ratings or stuff like that, its all about MONEY, and the networks have none of it at this point because they spent millions a week just to produce the same CSI show on every timeslot, that payroll comes from somewhere, i mean there isnt a special soap opera bank account, its all one thing. PLUS soap opera actors are the bottom rung of the pole, very very few make much, they make enough to get by, but alot have had careers because of this stuff, i mean General Hospital has quite a few longtime stars as do many of these shows, but those who think GH and Y&R are "safe" at this point, think again, they are safe for now, but they will be feeling the crunch very soon. It is very sad and OF COURSE people will pit soap opera actors against reality actors saying that SOAPS get paid too much, really, think again, its basically who at the end of the day has more rights and longtime appeal, just like music, reality stars are very very little investment, unless you are MTV and can pay 100,000 to snooki per dumb ass thinng she does, but then again that show, generates millions for MTV because, lets face it, the public is dumber than spit just like the cast of Jersey Shore. So again its nothing to do with ratings, it has to do with networks just not being able to afford long time deals at this point, nightime shows like the CSI nonsense costs tons of cash to produce and that is why you are losing soaps at this point. Also Prime Time actors like say a charlie sheen who were getting what a million an episode? and you wonder why shows are gone left and right, because the same morons run tv that run music.
But i have a strong feeling that cable will somehow launch its own soap network and produce these shows "new" not just the reruns they show now, dont doubt it.
