Yeah, it's really sad since these shows made up a fair chunk of my childhood (I used to lay with my dad on the couches and watch them...) sad .

But at the same time, it's so predictable and unsurprising! bored2 Especially since soaps have been on the chopping block for two years now. Seriously, what else is new?

Honestly, the next soap that should get cancelled is The Bold and The Beautiful. The Brooke/Ridge thing is played the fuck OUT already.

Right before THOSE^ four soaps, the cancellation of Another World started the downfall.

AMC is my SHIT!!

Although a show like The Edge Of Night started off on CBS, it was a bigger hit on ABC. But poor scheduling on the part of the ABC network lead to the show's ultimate downfall.

Ryan's Hope was OK, but never as great as CBS' The Young & The Restless, a show that was within the same scheduled time slot.

Loving sucked.

No one cared about The City.

And both of General Hospital's spin-offs Port Charles & GH: Nightshift didn't last very long (despite that GH: Nightshift was very sucessful for the show's only 2 seasons on SOATNet).

Come on now, it's cheaper to pay reality stars. razz While I'm sure there's still a number of people watching and loving the soaps, you know the channels with the reality TV, INCLUDING ABC ( ohgoon ) are giving the soaps a run for their money. It's all about dressing slutty, dressing in fabulous fashions, being catty and superficial, nasty, etc. But the dramatic soap element might be boring people and they want the "Real" (thought it's far from real... lol ) thing instead of characters. ( lol this is getting hard to type without laughing.)

I never got into soaps like my mother, grandmother, and aunt did. Even when mama got a job, she had daddy come home on his lunch break to watch (and eventually tape) her soaps for her. Same with my aunt. She either taped them or talked to my grandmother about what happened. I watched a few times on Summer break and then a little bit last week. I dunno why but it was just so sad watching...er...I think it was All My Children. This lady had a baby but it died, and then this cop came in and had another baby with him, so then the dad didn't have time to explain...and that had me crying.

lol Ok that's a shame. People would rather see grown women act a fool than watch talented actors act a fool...damn, sorry that it has to come to that for the soaps. I hope that doesn't mean we get more crappy talk shows. You can't help but know how to cook and re-upholster furniture thanks to all these shows.

And there also was Passions, which also died shortly after Another World. Apparently. Passions was the most trippy soap opera on TV, since it featured a disembodied cat's claw, a witch, and Abraham Lincoln. At least that's from the clips they used to show on VH1's Best Week Ever.

Nobody and I mean nobody has done that better than this lady right here:

Erika Slezack on One Life To Live! clapping

She perfected it in the '80's, portraying Victoria Lord and Niki Smith. Then she took the multliple personality role to a realm never to be duplicated in the 90's, when she split into Victoria/Niki/Tommy/Jean Randolph/Princess/ Tori/ AND Victor Lord! worship

Reality TV shows has killed the Daytime Soap Operas. Plain & Simple.

Just think about it. Why would people be bother watching All My Children to see Erica Kane marry her 25th (?!!!?) husband, when those people can watch Catching Up With The Kardashians to see Kim get a new black boyfriend?

nod yeahthat

As I commented at another website dealing with TV, the daytime soap opera became a victim of changing lifestyles. It's no accident that the heyday of daytime soap operas happened in the early 1980's, which was at the infancy of cable and just before the mass migration of adult middle-class women into the workforce. Once most women began working full-time, they had less time to catch up on soap operas, so that limited their viewing options. Then came the trashy talk shows like Jerry Springer and Maury Povich, which offered up real life melodrama about adultery, paternity suits, and domestic violence without having to pay a staff of writers and a slate of actors to produce. Then the death knell came with reality shows like The Hills, Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives franchise, The Kardashians, and their knockoffs on E! and VH1. Once again, it offered melodrama from real-life people, and it was broadcast several times a week day and night, so eager fans could catch it at any time, unlike the daytime soaps, which could only be seen in the daytime unless you had a DVR or SoapNet. The daytime soap appears to be going the way of the TV western and variety shows.

...and there it is. I've known for years that it would only be a matter of time before people would lose interest in scripted drama in favor of watching a bunch of idiots act a fool in real life. I can't stand it, I miss the glamour and panache of scripted television characters. All of these reality people are so rough around the edges...or in most cases, just flat out ignorant and one dimensional. The only reality stars that come even remotely close to the grand old characters of day and nighttime drama are the Beverly Hills Housewives, and the (now defunct) cast of High Society (with Tinsley Mortimer).

Yeah B&B and Y&R days are numbered too. I haven't watch Y&R in months because their storyline is so bland. Who wants to keep seeing Victor and Nikki get married 20 times then break up to seduce and marry folks who are 20 years younger than them? And B&B is just as bad...like someone mentioned earlier how many storylines are we going to go through where Brooke seduces and sleeps with Ridge and all the men in his family? She's currently going down a path where Ridge's son with Taylor is in love with her and Brooke is leading him on. I suspect it'll only be a matter of weeks before they are caught in a hotel room together. Then Ridge will divorce Brooke and re-marry Taylor yet again. Then while he's married to her he'll be secretly pining for that whore Brooke once again. SMH. They also have a dry storyline involving Brooke's daughter with Deacon Sharpe and her drama with Liam, son of Bill "Dollar Bill" Spencer who used to be Brad on Y&R who is married to Katie, Brooke's sister, in which the very same actress played Victoria on Y&R who used to be married to Brad. nuts

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
