I Got Laid Off

After 18 years with my company, I(along with a few others), got the word on Thursday. Business is really slow, so the company had to make more cuts.

This is the first time I've been in this situation. I've left jobs, but I never got laid off. I've always worked, and it's a weird feeling not having a job to go to. Now I have to start all over again at age 50, damn. My friends in the graphic design business gave me several contacts. Hopefully I'll get a job sooner rather than later. Thanks to the internet, at least I don't have to drag my portfolio from company to company.

Wish me luck.

As a magazine art director, I definitely feel for you, man.

You should use some of your time off to go visit SCNDLS in Texas or have her come visit you. I sense unfinished business between you two. boff

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I'm confident something will come along soon--be as agressive as you can in your job search.

I'm seeing good signs in the economy and think we're going to see offers for the rest of the year.

I was laid off 2 years ago and it was brutal looking for work. I think my chances would be much

greater today.

I have said this before ... but I still think "the great recession" is more like the Depression 2.

This isnt like one of those recessions that hit and is over 8 months later ...

Prices in Real Estate are down MORE than they were in the Great Depression .

I do foreclosures now ... mostly the bulk of my business - and it is quite depressing walking into a vacant house and seeing "scrawled" out on the dining room wall "my husband left his family and lost his job " or something like that .... or even a totally vacant house and pausing by a wall and seeing the marks of a family on the wall (as they were growing and measuring their kids etc) .... kinda puts a lil reality into the situation ...

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

Oh yeah, I'll get a good hunk of change(even after taxes are taken out). I'm trying to get my vacation/sick/personal time included. That's like an extra $3K. With my friends looking out for me, hopefully I'll get something close to what I had.

It just sucks losing all that senority I built up over 18 years.

Identity

It happened to me back in '03. I've been self-employed ever since.

At first I felt liberated, but real terror sunk in when I got buried under an avalanche of bills due to poor planning. After a few months I got my act together.

If you intend to file for unemployment benefits, please let the Employment Development Office know your former employer gave you a severance package.

Giving that I'm still on unemployment benefits while working part time, I understand exactly what you're going through.

Just be sure to filed for your own unemployment benefits AND food stamp card while you're still looking for full-time work. cool
