New book claims Malcolm X was gay

http://blogs.villagevoice..._had_g.php

A new book about Malcolm X says the controversial civil rights leader had an early homosexual relationship with a white businessman, according to The New York Times.

Thoughts?

This was covered in another thread long time ago. General consensus is the author is full of shit.

Funny how some people wait until a person has been dead for decades then all of a sudden decide to come out with some unproven and and uncredible "revelation".

Ah, my bad. I hadn't seen the thread.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. I didn't really see anything in the news reports that indicated there was any substantial evidence.

nod I remember reading an article were it said that Malcom used to prostitute himself to men

Don't know about it. Unless it's proven, I take it with a grain of salt

I think it's from this same book but I'm not sure. I mean we know before his spiritual awakening, the man was no saint. Dude was a drug dealer, pimp, gangsta type of individual and he had admitted it in his own autobiography. Anything else was shared by his wife Betty so people need to find a nother means of making quick cash off the dead.

Who cares if he was. It's a shame people wanna do this just to make money but if that is how it has to be. Sometimes I thank my lucky stars I didn't pursue a career as a public figure of any choice.

He might've been. I mean, some of us are. That said, many of us aren't. El Hajj certainly never gave public voice to this aspect of himself, either way. I'll respect that by not giving ear to it now.

In any case, the man is a hero to my gay self regardless of his sexuality.

I feel ya! nod What should it matter about someone's sexuality? Their place in life wasn't to be an open book, their place was to inspire people to think, as Malcolm did until he was snuffed out by his own men. confused

Ironically, the guy that wrote the book, died himself, last Friday. Just days before the book was published on Monday. hmm

http://www.nytimes.com/20...-work.html

From what I understand, he makes a lot of claims in this book that alter a lot of what has been known of Malcolm's life.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. I'll probably read the book but I don't think I'll be buying it and quite likely, not much of what's in it. shrug

hmmm Wonder what will be said about him? Probably nothing nice.

That's kind of weird that he died on the eve of his book being publishied. I'm not superstitious per se but um....that's awfully strange.

Malcom X has been dead 50 years. sad I wonder what the state of race relations, the black community, the black family, our nations' political landscape etc would be like had he lived at least through the 90s. Something tells me the NOI would be quite different, we would have 3 viable political parties and the crack epidemic would not have dessimated certain communities. Ah but that's just my wishful thinking. He probably would have said "fuck this bs" and high tailed it to somewhere in Africa or some island nation. shrug

I know one thing...gangsta rap would be totally different. lol

Of course it is. The title itself suggest as much. "Life of Reinvention"; the author is reinventing Malcom but for what purpose we don not know. He also makes it a point to mention Malcom's liaisons with white women. What's the purpose of that? Perhaps to suggest Malcom wasn't really "pro-black?"

In a way...the book is a bit of a smear campaign 50 years after Malcom's death. Excerpts of the book are already on the web which means most people will probably read bits and pieces but not neccessarily purchase it. If you have facts about a person...don't wait 50 years. Confront them while there alive or at least come out with your book soon after the person has departed. Who is left to defend Malcom other than his daughters? shrug

Ah, my bad. I hadn't seen the thread.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. I didn't really see anything in the news reports that indicated there was any substantial evidence.

You'll love this, Mili: it was me who created the old thread around an article by.......Peter Tatchell! lol (I swear that that time and in our discussion about the Buju Banton boycott are the only two times I've mentioned the guy's name on the Org!) Tbh, it was kind of a crappy article, trying to 'claim' Malcolm based on speculation in some book from years before. I think I just posted it to see what people made of it (did they embrace it, were they repulsed or offended by the idea, etc). The comments were more interesting than the piece itself, and the follow-up thread was similarly revealing.

The Manning Marable book (there's a P&R thread about it, too) seems like a different kettle of fish, though, because he was a serious scholar and a committed political activist. I get the impression that those sites that are making this the 'headline news' of the book are just looking for gossip, as the main thesis the author seems to be exploring appears to be that the 'narrative' of the autobiography with Alex Haley, where Malcolm seems to have gradually come round to being a sort of moderate integrationist after his trip to Mecca, is badly skewed, and there are chapters missing (which he viewed in his research). What he argues is that Malcolm was actually trying to develop a broad-based Black united front, which would encompass a diverse and expansive range of groups in addition to the NOI, and which would be more in line with a sort of Garveyite internationalism. (In fact, another point he's seemingly making in the book is that it's misleading to think Malcolm's first political awakening was in prison, as the autobiography also suggests, when his father was a follower of Garvey's ideas.) I'd reckon Marable probably just touches passingly on his pre-conversion sexual activities and some bloggers have run with it, ignoring everything else about the text, which looks like an interesting piece of work.

Interesting on many levels that a man who has been dead 46 years garners more respect and headlines than any so called "leader" in 2011 in the Black community.

There was subtle hint 2 this is Spike's movie when Malcolm bend his wife over and tried 2 do her from the back. It was like he was having a flashback 2 his prison days.

Y'know what I just learned? It turns out some fool did actually start filming an adult remake called Malcolm XXX. disbelief Turns out the cast were so offended by the script, they walked off the set, so production got cancelled. And there I was thinking my weak gag was too ridiculous to be true!
