Is this an appropriate question for the setting?

My niece participated in a small art show/display at a local mall. This is her first time participating in something like this, she's an amatuer but she's pretty good. She's a photographer. Wife and I stopped by yesterday and of course I bought one of her pieces along with one of her friends pieces. My wife wanted to ask her "how many have you sold"? We didn't ask but I thought to myself thats kind of tacky. This isn't a yard sale or flea market, we're talking about art.

I think that question would have been out of place (being this is her first time, might be embarrasing if her answer was zero, etc...)

Wife thinks it's a legitimate question

I'd probably ask 'how are you doing?' Or 'is it going well?'

lol

I don't think it's an entirely innappropriate question but If I were to ask it I might rephrase it from "How many have you sold?" to something a bit more conversation-like, like "How's your first show coming along? Any sales?" It's a tough thing, selling art in this economy, so I would not focus on numbers especially being that it's her first show. I, personally, might not ask it and just focus on how proud y'all are that she's an exhibiting artist.

That said, I hope she sold a whole bunch! Congrats to your niece. cool

If this was her first artshow, SHE would have told you if she sold anything in her excitement.

I wouldn't ask if she sold anything, its not about how popular her work is... more about supporting her.

It would be nice to buy one and ask how many were sold THEN... that would be OK. wink

Well, knowing my tactless ass, I would have asked her the very same, "How many have you sold?" And if she had replied, forlornly, "None." I would have replied, "Well don't expect that to last too long. I intend to get you several referrals."

See, if it were my child or neice, I would hit up all my friends, coworkers, etc. who forced me to buy all that shit their kids were selling all through elementay, middle and high school. hmmm

Good idea. You don't want her to get too "hammy" in transit. nod

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.
