oh.. we're a United Nations seating chart... lol

Dad - he and both of his parents born in USA

his father: half Eastern Band Cherokee (Native American), the rest a mix of black [American] and English

his mother: I'm not sure what her father was (her stepfather came along when she was 5 and she didn't see her real dad after that), but her mom was Eastern Band Cherokee, black and wherever the surname Perry is originally from in Europe (English?)

Mom - she and both of her parents born in USA

her mother: half black, half Eastern Band Cherokee

her father: both parents born in Jamaica, but his mother was half Dutch/German and the rest a mix of black and English, and his father was white; half English, half Sephardic (Jewish) Spaniard*. The fam that left Spain--it's actually an Italian surname so I guess that's in there somewhere, too. I don't speak it well, which bothers me, but I was the last to be taught Spanish at home.. my mom said she and her sister were required to speak Spanish to their grandfather (their dad died when they were very little so he taught them).

* When they left Spain, Jamaica was kind of a pit stop; my branch moved to Cananda and then the US, while their relatives moved to Cuba, Puerto Rico, Chile, Canada and England in the early 1900s. Some of the distant relatives I've met online said there's also Syrian in the mix from before they hit the Caribbean. I don't think any of them stayed Jewish... my mom was raised Episcopalian lol

We come in every skin color (or lack thereof wink ), brunettes & blondes (no gingers that I know of), every hair texture

when I was little, my hair was an odd medium brown (it's very dark now and I don't get much highlights in the summer like I used to sad ), wavy and grew down to my butt (my niece's was blonde & when got to her knees they had to cut it, lol).. whenever there was a multi-culti program/event at school and you had to play a part & recite something about a culture, they always made me the 'Indian' -- hair in two long braids, the look "complete" with a paper headband with a feather stuck in it hmph! lol and some turquoise/silver jewelry from my half Cherokee maternal grandmother

Additional branches of the family tree (married in): Filipino, Egyptian, Puerto Rican, Ecuadorian, Irish, Cuban, Dominican, Vietnamese, French Moroccan and Blackfoot (Native American).

Personally, I feel that we should be allowed to check the box next to "Other" whenever race/ethnicity question is asked, because unless you live in some very isolated part of the globe that has not experienced immigration, we're all of mixed blood.

nod

We had a whole discussion (actually, more than one) on here about the term "Hispanic" and "Black" since you could have Irish/Spanish ancestry or Aztec/Spanish or Italian/Mayan or English/Lenca or Aztec/African or Chinese/African (or any combination thereof) and be "Hispanic".

I look Pakistani, but had to mark "white" on the census. whofarted

Joking aside, I really have no clue about the rest of my ancestry, there's a lot of holes there. Sure, there's been talk on both sides of "Indian in the family", but to be honest that's something most African-American families say lol .

A couple of my mothers siblings did do a bit of research a few years back, and they found no Native American, but caucasian - a governor from the southern portion of the United States, wayyyyy back in the family tree. But really no one is one-hundred percent anything anyway, and I still consider myself BLACK.

You could always ask a psychic, right. About this lifetime and previous ones. Another option, would be to have some researcher look in to it. There is a program on PBS, I forgot the name of it, where alot of celebrities have found out info about their family tree. Ms. Winfrey was one of the celebs on the program.

[Edited 3/16/11 12:30pm]

It was African-American Lives Parts 1 and II with Professor Henry Gates that was aired between 2008-2009, during Black History Months. You may be able to find parts of it online

Actually, she's talking about the one he did last year on PBS; Faces of America

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/facesofamerica

~ and just a general fyi: that other show, also started last year, Who Do you Think You Are? on NBC, is just for filling in genealogy (family tree) holes -- and, not all records are available or always accurate.. confused

The thing with this DNA testng though, it's gender-based.. women can only get the matrilineal DNA/ancestry info ~ just their mother's mother's mother's etc. line

-- men can get both sides.

If you're female and an only child or only have sisters, your dad or his brother/his father/a nephew born to your dad's brother would have to get tested, too for his side of the family.

(EDIT: I had old/incorrect info)

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/f...history/32

The link to tthe DNA testing place they used is under "Other Links"

I think George Lopez uses the same company; he sometimes has it done for guests on his talk show.. he found out that he's 4% African & was so excited, he kept mentioning it over & over last yr.. lol

Men can do both paternal/maternal tests. All sons and daughters inherit their mother's mtDNA. The Y chromosome(paternal) is passed from father to son. I did these tests at two different sites.

Serious? doh! Damn.. I'm female.. when I started looking into it yrs ago, I was told you need both genders.. but it was so expensive then, I said forget about it..

Bastards probably just wanted more $$$ out of me lol -- they didn't bother to mention Oh, you can save $$ and only have to pay for one test if you've got a brother...

and I've got 2! rolleyes lol lol

So I guess the only real problem is if you're female and an only child or only have sisters; then your dad would have to be tested ~ and if he's not around, a male relative of his; his brother/nephew from a brother.. or his dad, if living.

If I may ask: why did you have it done by 2 diff. places? did they yield the same results?

Oh yeah, I remember the "Faces of America" show, because I watched that one but couldn't think of the name of it. I've also watched "Who Do You Think You Are" the first round of shows, when it came on last year, as well as the current one, and posted about it last year in the P&R forum. Interesting show. I just watched the one with the Rosie O'Donnell and Kim Catrall (?esp) of Sex in the City.

I'm also very aware of the DNA testing process especially since I've done a lot of research on it and continue to do so, and discussed it gazillion times in the P&R section. Not to mention I'm a Spencer Wells' fan. lol But thanks.

About George Lopez, yeah I remember that he gave DNA tests to his guests.

Men can do both paternal/maternal tests. All sons and daughters inherit their mother's mtDNA. The Y chromosome(paternal) is passed from father to son. I did these tests at two different sites.

nod Correct.

I really felt for Rosie & Kim -- that place Rosie went to in Ireland where poor families were kept eek sad -- and Kim's dog of a grandfather! hmph! lol

the Lionel Richie and Vanessa Williams ones were full of cool surprises though

if you missed any, you can watch on NBC.com

Yes, the one with Rosie's ancestors was sad. About Kim's grandfather, that was shocking to her mother and Aunts what he did, but at least it brought some closure to the mystery of his disappearance they wondered about for years.

I did see the one on Vanessa Williams, but I missed the Lionel Ritchie one. I think they are doing repeats now, because the one with Rosie's family came on again last Friday. I will check out Lionel on the Primetime OnDemand on cable. biggrin

I don't know for sure, I know my maternal grandfather has french ancestry, but my maternal grandmother was from germany and was part Yugoslav. On my fathers side is also a french but potentially northern italian name - despite probably centuries in sweden.

Who know!!! lol

There is a program called, "Who Do You Think You Are?"

on NBC, Fridays, 8 p.m. ET. Lisa Kudrow is the producer.

The program is about tracing the genealogy of celebrities. I have not seen it yet. Have you?
