Pat and Crank...?

I read an item in the newspaper yesterday, about how rihanna's performance at the 2011 nba all star game was controversial...outside of the fact that she didn't seem to do with her non-microphone holding hand, so it wound it on her vahjayjay most of the time, the article said that Rihanna had performed the illegal in jamaica (?) dance called pat and crank..?...women open and close their legs, rotate their hips, and rub their poonannynannies..?

Has anyone else heard of this dance..? I recall that someone a couple of years ago had a thread about the dance called "pegging" but what the heck's going on here?

God does she ever sing in tune? She's awful. lol

She should really lipsynch more often.

I do love that damn "Only Girl In The World" song, it's addictive.

And that's probably the first time I've liked the red hair, but it's because of the drag-queen-sized fall.

Pat and Crank sounds like some sort of racially offensive blackface comedy team from yesteryears.

Did Rihanna “Pat & Crank” At The Grammy’s?

February 21, 2011

News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. Feb. 21, 2011: For some Barbadians watching the Grammy’s on February 13th, Rihanna’s dance moves during the performance of “Say My Name” with Rapper Drake, was definitely part of the controversial “Pat and Crank” wave hitting the island and the region.

Pat and Crank, the song and dance from singer Peter Wiggins, aka Peter Ram, has created quite a stir in the conservative Bajan society, leaving many refusing to comment publicly on the issue. But that has not stopped many young people across the Caribbean from doing the moves that some call tantamount to dry masturbation. The dance involves a lot of “wining” or “wuking up” on the part of the female dancer and the patting of the crotch area while opening and closing the legs in time to the rhythm of the song.

Rihanna hit the stage with Drake on Feb. 13th and stripped down to an outfit that left her ample butt cheeks peeking out from behind the strings of her costume, and proceeded to gyrate and break out into dance moves that would rival many in Caribbean dancehalls across the region. For some watching and chatting on Facebook, the performance was surely reminiscent of the Pat and Crank.

Akobi Gill was among those who took to the social networking site to voice his reaction. “Look at Rihanna doing the pat and crank!,” he wrote to his friends. Many laughed out loud at the comment which stirred the sharing of a photo from the performance of the sexy Grammy-winning Bajan singer patting her crotch area as she sang: “Say My Name.”

But for others, Rihanna’s performance was more in line with the Caribbean “wuk up,” or sexually inspired dance moves. “It was more wuk up meets bogle,” the Bajan Reporter’s Ian Bourne said.

Ruel Ward, who manages singer Peter Ram, also agreed it was no pat and crank. Ward said from looking at the video of the performance he does not feel the moves were part of the controversial dance craze.

But he declined to have Ram comment on it, saying the song and dance that was leaked on the Internet created way too much controversy and he does not want to revisit the issue.

The song by Ram and subsequent video released on Facebook has been labeled “atrocious and disgraceful” by many Bajans. Ram is a household name not only in Barbados but also throughout the Caribbean. Known as Mr. Freestyle in Barbados, the singer is originally a dub artist who now sings soca after including songs like “The White Pants Tight” and “Woman By My Side.”

But that still leaves us with the question: “Did Rihanna really Pat and Crank?” The answer it seems depends on whom you ask and of course you can be the judge by taking a peek at her actual performance below.
