I didn't take what she said as not being a fan of Monique or Halle. She was just bringing up the fact that negative portrayals seem to garner the most attention, especially when it comes to black actresses.
However, I do have to disagree with her when she says no black woman is as low life as the character Monique portrayed in "Precious". Please! I've seen some that would make her look like Mother of the Year! "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Her son said in the media that they do payola and no one batted an eyeball about a practice that is illegal. I do not agree with a lot of the things that Cathy does but really is she any different than other business moguls. I do think that protrayals of blacks in the media are out of whack due to a lack of balance and to answer the question do we need to be concerned about what white people think no but we do need to be concerned about what we think about ourselves.

Yeah I feel the same way... It seems many blacks only define themselves/'being black' through the eyes of the white mainstream, liek they seek some kind of 'approval' (master-slave mentality?)... Who cares? Just be yourself and move along, dudes.... Who the heck is she actually? Everybody is somebody, but nobody wants to be themselves.

What RO did was make it "legal" and instead of labels adding to local tastes and regional requests (what was left of them). They funneled it all to headquarters. The labels didn't budge at first but eventually caved. They still spend locally, trust me, labels still pad pockets locally, but it was another expense that was "created" to make $ off of record adds.
We went from handling music our own way to being heavily monitored through corporate. We still did what we could to add regional tastes, but had to be much more careful about it. And really my point was, her crying about the taxing of perfomance rights was out of line, since they strong arm the labels all the time. Tit for tat. We're not stupid. You know you wrong Ms Hughes, hiding behind the guise of Black radio, when you have been shoveling cash out of labels all these years!
Side note, new director of programming Jay Stevens knows his shhh. But programmers will still tell you they program with their hands tied. But I'm sure that's Cumulus, Lincoln Financial, and Clear Channel as well.
