have you checked the plug to make sure its in the outlet?

why dont u just flick the switch!!!

have you spoken to your landlord about the conditions in your apartment? if not, how about the housing authorities in your city?

if you can afford one, get a generator for back-up power in the cold season.

the rat has to go, he's going to cause a fire if you let him chew your wiring. trap him, relocate him elsewhere.

have someone knowledgeable check the wiring to be sure there is no water intrusion/leak potentially causing wiring issues, or other fire hazard. good luck

Don't you have main breaker box? If so, have you checked it? When you flip the switch(es) do they go back out? If so, you definitely need an electrician, you have dangerous electrical short.

The cost depends on the damage, $200 maybe, could be more could be a bit less. Unplug your heater first, before checking you breakers, if your switches stay on then you heater is drawing too much power on that circuit and you need to plug it in to another section that doesn't have a lot of electrical draw on it.

Your electric heater probably pulls the most juice. Get an exterminator to get rid of the rat, and call an electrician ASAP.

An exposed wire can easily arc and cause a fire - call an electrician. Your pet rat has to go before he kills you - call an exterminator or set a few traps. The space heater absolutely draws a ton of power and will trip your breaker if it's not on it's own circuit - make sure it's the only appliance on that line or it can overheat your outlet, light switch or the cord itself.

DO NOT MESS with electrical problems.

Chances are that this rat has chewed through some wires and causing intermitent ground faults or shorts that just might cause a spark one night, and well you don't want to lose your home (or worse YOUR LIFE) like that.

Call an exterminator, then call an electrician.

Or just move.

But don't IGNORE the problem!!!!

im not joking and its only my room that doesnt have electricity.The rest of the place works fine.

perhaps you could but a battery operated smoke alarm and attach it right next to your bed. i checked them out online, they are inexpensive - 7$.

A smoldering electrical fire inside the walls would go un-noticed by your average battery-operated smoke alarm until it erupts in flames and sends thicker smoke out into the room (and down the halls to wherever the detector is located). By then (if you'd been asleep) the fumes would've made you pass out and not even hear the beeping.

yes i know but i havent heard the rat since this problem happened.So hopefully he got electrocuted.

I know hindsight is 20/20 and all, but if you hear an animal of some sort in your walls, you should act as soon as possible to get it out before it dies. Aside from the obvious damage it could cause to wires and whatnot, now you're left with a smelly dead animal that isn't going to remove itself from the wall and there's no telling where it died exactly (though if it were indeed electrocution, you could at least surmise it's somewhere along the wiring).

I'm not an electrician, but I believe that the faulty wires can be bypassed (made inoperable) and new wires run. I don't know how the Building Department in your neck-of-the-woods regulates that sort of thing (they may require that the wires be physically removed).

Call at least 3 electricians for an estimate, pick the guy in the middle price.

And plug up any crevices in your home to make sure critters can't get back in!!!
