[Edited 2/6/11 14:09pm]>j so last week when it was getting dark outside,I went to turn on my bedroom light and everything including my bedroom outlets stopped working. So i had to go out and buy a drop cord and plug it to a outlet in the living room. [Edited 2/6/11 14:34pm] It worked great until today when the living room outlet stopped working so I had to move it to another outlet and now Im scased the other outlet is gonna stop working. So any advice? what stuff in my room runs up the most power? im thinking its my electric heater? and how much does a electrition cost? If i did get one, there is still a rat inside the wall and its possible the electrition fixes it and the rat can mess it up again. Please help I AM WORRIED[Edited 2/6/11 14:46pm]

have you spoken to your landlord about the conditions in your apartment? if not, how about the housing authorities in your city?

if you can afford one, get a generator for back-up power in the cold season.
the rat has to go, he's going to cause a fire if you let him chew your wiring. trap him, relocate him elsewhere.
have someone knowledgeable check the wiring to be sure there is no water intrusion/leak potentially causing wiring issues, or other fire hazard. good luck

I would not attempt to patch work anything electrical in a mobile home. If possible, get an exterminator and an electrician. An electrical fire in a mobile home...any fire really...has a really good chance of being fatal. I'm firmly planted in denial

Don't you have main breaker box? If so, have you checked it? When you flip the switch(es) do they go back out? If so, you definitely need an electrician, you have dangerous electrical short. The cost depends on the damage, $200 maybe, could be more could be a bit less. Unplug your heater first, before checking you breakers, if your switches stay on then you heater is drawing too much power on that circuit and you need to plug it in to another section that doesn't have a lot of electrical draw on it.

Your electric heater probably pulls the most juice. Get an exterminator to get rid of the rat, and call an electrician ASAP.

An exposed wire can easily arc and cause a fire - call an electrician. Your pet rat has to go before he kills you - call an exterminator or set a few traps. The space heater absolutely draws a ton of power and will trip your breaker if it's not on it's own circuit - make sure it's the only appliance on that line or it can overheat your outlet, light switch or the cord itself. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Damn..... Well let me say I am not an electrician....BUT I work on x-ray machines and have been doing electrical work for nearly 20 years... The rat problem is a real fire hazard...you need to get rid of the rodent problem first....or else anything else will just happen again... Next...you are going to do one of the following.... 1. Call an electrician...which may cost as much or more than solution 2.... 2. Move! I know it is your home...I can make a few guesses to your financial situation so purchasing another trailer may not be an option...but know this...because your electrical system and insulation has been compromised...it is only a matter of time before you have a fire...sorry... I have relatives that reside in trailer homes as well and I would have to tell them the same thing....these homes are not designed to be repaired...they are designed to serve their purpose for maybe 20 years...then be replaced... Good luck....and sorry again...

DO NOT MESS with electrical problems.
Chances are that this rat has chewed through some wires and causing intermitent ground faults or shorts that just might cause a spark one night, and well you don't want to lose your home (or worse YOUR LIFE) like that.
Call an exterminator, then call an electrician.
Or just move.
But don't IGNORE the problem!!!! By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

You do realize that your water heater requires electricity too don't you? Look...you do not seem to grasp the reality that this isn't an option....you have to fix the electricity first....before you die in a fire....my instincts are saying shenanigans on this whole thing....if this is for real...you need to move!

perhaps you could but a battery operated smoke alarm and attach it right next to your bed. i checked them out online, they are inexpensive - 7$.

A smoldering electrical fire inside the walls would go un-noticed by your average battery-operated smoke alarm until it erupts in flames and sends thicker smoke out into the room (and down the halls to wherever the detector is located). By then (if you'd been asleep) the fumes would've made you pass out and not even hear the beeping.
It's no joke. Dance4me - please take caution with this!!! By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!

I have one more question, I recently had a conversation with a friend of mine and he said they would probably have to knock down the walls in my bedroom to get to the wires.I hope thats not true...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
you seem to be ignoring the rodent problem. the plague was caused by rats, you know.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yes i know but i havent heard the rat since this problem happened. So hopefully he got electrocuted.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Prepare to smell him then...
I know hindsight is 20/20 and all, but if you hear an animal of some sort in your walls, you should act as soon as possible to get it out before it dies. Aside from the obvious damage it could cause to wires and whatnot, now you're left with a smelly dead animal that isn't going to remove itself from the wall and there's no telling where it died exactly (though if it were indeed electrocution, you could at least surmise it's somewhere along the wiring).

I'm not an electrician, but I believe that the faulty wires can be bypassed (made inoperable) and new wires run. I don't know how the Building Department in your neck-of-the-woods regulates that sort of thing (they may require that the wires be physically removed).
Call at least 3 electricians for an estimate, pick the guy in the middle price.

Assuming it's possible in the US, I'd sue the rat for damages.
